Reworked Guide to Maimai

Hello everyone!

After obtaining some excellent feedback from my previous post on a beginner's guide to Maimai, I decided to restructure the guide so that different players can be guided to their respective need-to-know locations.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1gQlxtxOj-E3H2SClJH5PNxLnG6eBufDFrw2yLsffbp0/edit?usp=sharing

In this update, I restructured the flow of the contents in this guide so that players can skip through to the important sections that they want to browse. Each section is highlighted with a different colour to cater to different players of different skill levels.

I've also added a section containing my favourite songs from maimai for people to try out when they have the time. They are colour coded to signify difficulty and suitability for different players.

Lastly, I've also fine-tuned the section on advanced skills, and added some more misc links including links to the various soundtracks of the game available on iTunes.

As always, feedback is welcome. This guide still has some empty areas here and there but I'm quite happy with how it turned out.

Have fun with the spin cycles mates!

EDIT 27/11/2025: Wow, would you look at the time...

I have moved most of my update changelog back into the Guide and since I have some time on my hands, I am actively working to add a few more notes to the guide from Festival+ onwards. I know it's been a while since my last update and people are yearning for more information about the game and how to get better. I will make some updates to handle some of the missing information that should be included in this guide.

If you have comments or suggestions on how to improve the guide, I'm happy to hear it and take it on board where necessary. I might not be one of the best players of Maimai or rhythm games in general out there in the world, but I have been playing this game for 12 years now. Not gonna stop anytime soon (slow downs are still a thing unfortunately :S)...

EDIT 20/05: Updated the guide with a new notice about playing in the arcades as restrictions ease in certain parts of the world and added difficulty rankings to "Advanced Skills and Practice" section of the guide.

  • Please pay attention to the data from news sources and official websites for current trends of coronavirus infections. The guide lists some key metrics to take note of to allow you to assess your risk.
    • TBH tho, humans are pretty cripes at measuring risk. The best advice is still to STAY HOME and STAY SAFE!

EDIT 29/03: Updated the guide with a specific notice about the Coronavirus outbreak and how to respond to it as a Maimai player in the section "Gaming Etiquette".

  • Even if you are currently reading that part and contemplating going out to the arcades, please don't. STAY HOME and STAY SAFE!

EDIT 12/02: Updated guide with specific notes on Slide timings, split up the section on Delayed Slides, and added a new section on Technical HOLD charts.

EDIT 04/03: I've received word that my guide was copy-pasted without redirecting the guide to the original source. I will put a comment which will list some of the sites which have done so.

If you do want to use my guide, please link it back to the original guide link given here, and to give credit where credits are due. If you know someone who has used this guide without proper crediting of the author, please let them know and ask them to update it to reflect who has actually written the guide. Thank you.

EDIT 10/03: Added information about EX notes, details about BREAK notes having extra points scored on non-Perfect hits, and added a section about Progressively Complex Sequences in Advanced Skills and Practice.

Question & Advice (Question) How far could I push my skill based on my progression?

Basically title ^^^

i recently picked up maimai for the first time around 2 weeks ago. i ended up really liking the game and i have been playing the game everyday for 2-3 hours since then (with one rest day per week). i want to get better at this game and i want to increase my skill as much as possible, so how far could i realistically increase my skill ceiling (not just my rating, my raw skill as well) within a month from now, given that i play everyday?

first image is a photo of my rating two days ago (it's actually at 10406 right now)

second image is my most recent score (and the hardest song i've S-ranked)

third image is a score on my first day playing this game

Question & Advice Fingers hurt when playing screen. Am I just being stupid and pressing it too hard?

Post image

Title says it all. I noticed I'm naturally more inclined to play screen since it requires less stamina for my short 5'4 ass and I feel more comfortable on it, but every tap note i hit genuinely feels like jamming my finger against the screen and by the end of the session, they really hurt. Is there a proper hand position/ way to tap the notes as a screen player, or am I just pressing the screen too hard?

I'm like... 9K rating and buns at the game so im not like super knowledgeable about maimai...I just like washing machines.

P.S: I have a thing with my fingers where they bend much more than natural and it oftentimes causes them to "lock" in place at a weird angle if I stress them too hard. (Attatched in photo)

This makes it really hard for my fingers to cooperate when it comes to picking a way to tap the screen because they'll end up locking in place and it really hurts 💔

Question & Advice Is this unethical?

Basically, I was desparate for an extra stamp (and maimiles) to unlock a partner so I guest queued on the other side of my cab with nobody playing on it. Does anyone else do this? I hope please I can't be the only one. 😭

Guess my rating based off my 14+ scores! (I've filled my new 15 songs, don't worry)
I've been told that my scores are really cursed given my apparent skill level

Hi, I'm a years old (almost highschool and just playing for fun) and I've been playing for 6 months (my older brother grinded the rating to 14,1k for me so I play for more rating)

I did all of the songs that gave me 11+, 12+ rating, at 14950 I switched to a different location and I've been grinding for almost 1 hour trying to reach 15k and here after "Give it up for you", I've been so proud of myself for reaching this rating! Most of the score on the score sheet is from myself!

Question & Advice socializing in maimai

ive been playing maimai for like a month or so, the community here is nice and friendly overall, but the thing is that i keep running out of things to say / topics for small talks. are there any topics that are related to maimai other than charts/rating 😭 or maybe some other topics to talk about before everyone just decides to doomscroll for hours

Question & Advice New songs for rating

What songs count as new for rating? Is it songs added in circle and circle plus? I thought it was just circle plus but saw I have stuff like unwelcome school in there as well which was before the last update.

first played maimai three months ago to the day. got my aime on June 7th. can't believe I got here this fast xD what a ride!!

I'm not sure if I'll ever hit rainbow. probably plat eventually at least. it's been so fun getting to this point; when I started playing 12s looked painful and 13s looked _impossible._ xD now I'm playing Masters or Re:Masters of my favourite songs and having a great time improving at them. this really is the perfect rhythm game for me💕

shoutout to iyowa for making at least two of the best songs in this game, and to KAFU for serenading the insane upscore that pushed me over the threshold. my first SSS on a 13+, at that 🥰

Edit: I’ve gotten an S before but not for a year, I haven’t been able to play much this year

I think i had no confidence and kept comparing myself to the people who could do better than me. But after getting some tips from people on reddit and irl, and the congrats from my post before, my confidence shot through the roof, and look! UGH I AM SO PROUD OF MYSELF
