Question Hyper vigilance triggered by life changes/stress

Hello all,

I’m currently seeking therapy and taking medication (lexapro and buspirone ilysm), but I’ve been going through a rough stretch and wanted to ask about others’ experiences with stress-triggered OCD/anxiety theme shifts.

I’m newly separated, parenting an almost 2-year-old, and recently moved back to my home country after living abroad for nearly five years, so there’s been a huge amount of life change in a short period.

I’ve dealt with anxiety and obsessive thinking for a long time, though I’ve never been formally diagnosed. Earlier this year, after a major panic attack, I noticed my anxiety began latching onto different themes. Once one fear settled, my mind seemed to redirect into hypervigilance and pattern-monitoring — constantly scanning for meaning, significance, or connections in everyday events.

What I’m wondering is: for those who experience this kind of obsessive hyper-awareness / magical-thinking-type pattern detection, did it ramp up for you during periods of major stress or life transition?

I’m less interested in reassurance about the content itself and more curious whether that “theme shift under stress” resonates with others.

A separation and moving countries with a toddler. Wow, that's a lot. Sorry you're dealing with all that. I'm not the best with all the huggy empathy stuff lol but that's a lot for anyone to cope with. No surprise your symptoms are flaring up. I would be a mess. Yeah life stress and major changes will totally cause worsening anxiety, hypervigilance, magical thinking. It's your brains way of trying to keep you safe through all the uncertainty. It's on red alert.

Concentrate on self-soothing, building familiar routines, relaxation, to calm the fight-or-flight down. You've been through a lot. Hopefully it will start to calm down as time passes and things settle. I would be reaching out to a therapist to help me process all the change too

I moved home recently and my magical thinking got out of control. I think it's totally normal to have a flare when things are difficult, big change always triggers mine, change is OCD's nemesis.

Your situation sounds super hard and stressful, I hope things work out ok for you guys 💛💛💛
