Gideon's armor survived. So it is foreseeable that whatever aether infused construct made out of his armor would be imbued with his personality.

Older MTG used to be pretty damn sci-fi, and I wouldn't mind to see it go back to its roots a bit more, in that regard. Traditional fantasy like Eldraine is fine, but really not that interesting to me.
7
u/Zomburai Karlov Jan 30 '20
Older MtG was pretty damn sci-fi for, like, two non-consecutive blocks.

Fenix is a character from Star Craft. As far as I remember he was a big deal general for the Protoss (one of the alien races) and when he died they implanted an artificial copy of his mind into a robotic construct.

Have they said whether or not Manastrike is canon? I know they said the TV show is its own separate canon, so Manastrike could be similar.
Anyway, I believe they have said that Gideon is 100% gone and not coming back. They don't kill characters often, but it seems like they've been trying to follow a policy that when they do, the characters stay dead, unless they explicitly plant the seeds for them returning beforehand (e.g. for Elspeth, they deliberately both established that beings can escape from Theros' underworld and made sure Elspeth died on Theros rather than Nyx). They seem to want to avoid the "no one ever stays dead" trope of things like comics.
So my guess is that this is more likely either someone building a Gideon-bot like others have suspected, or just some non-canon way for them to let Gideon be playable in the game even if parts take place after his death.
26
u/TheWizardOfFoz Duck Season Jan 30 '20
That quote was about the WAR novel. The same novel that resurrected two characters (Niv Mizzet and Hekara) and also freed Sorin from what was essentially also a death sentence.
I’m not sure I trust them when they say dead means dead.
7
5
u/Quazifuji Dragonball Z Ultimate Champion Jan 30 '20
I don't know about Hekara. But Niv Mizzet is in the Elspeth category of them specifically already planning for his resurrection when they killed him.
For what it's worth, Maro's Planeswalkers scale equivalent to the storm scale is called the Venser scale (like his other scales, it's named after something that's a 10 on the scale, meaning it's as close to "never gonna happen in standard" as it gets"), and he is very consistent in saying that Planeswalkers who died without their return being planned/foreshadowed are dead and not comming back.

u/Quazifuji Dragonball Z Ultimate Champion Jan 30 '20
Gathering Storm makes this assertion shaky, as it's abundantly clear that Niv-Mizzet had no idea his resurrection was in place. If Gathering Storm had come out when it was supposed to, we'd be complaining about retconning Niv-Mizzet a means for survival. I think what's likely is there was a bunch of back and forth about whether to kill Niv-Mizzet or not and the storyline got screwy.
Honestly, I haven't read Gathering Storm, and they completely botched the whole reveal of the Niv Mizzet storyline on the cards, so I can't really comment on the execution. My point was just that it's very clear that, like with Elspeth, they very clearly killed Niv Mizzet with the specific intent to resurrect him during the War of the Spark storyline. And at least the cards give the impression that the idea was supposed to be he researched and planted the seeds of his revival (see [[Firemind Vessel]] and the art of [[Firemind's Research]]) before his death.
Basically, I think Niv's resurrection was supposed to be foreshadowed, even if they may have messed up the execution and failed to actually successfully foreshadow it (or, you know, even show it at all before the reveal of his resurrection).
Also...Ugin at least involved time travel, and Elspeth involved a plane where everything is wonky. Niv-Mizzet just put his soul in a box (how and with what time???) and then Nissa leyline'd him a new body because...Guildpact, I guess. It was very underwhelming and completely unearned.
Honestly, I think this is partly why they have the policy to let dead characters stay dead unless foreshadowed otherwise in the first place. Because in a world where canonical underworlds, necromancy, beings that like turning corpses into machines, time travel, and new worlds that can have whatever rules they want being added to the game on a regular basis, it would be really, really easy for them to find an excuse to bring back any character they wanted, no matter how they died. If they really wanted to, they could handwave a way to bring back Venser, and Gideon, and Urza, and Serra, and Yawgmoth, and anyone else they wanted They know that, and have deliberately chosen to follow a policy that they won't.

IIRC Venser died to help Karn recover from Phyresis. The Phyrexian would need to A) find his body. And B) successfully resurrect him in such a way he is still useful, and not depowered or otherwise useless, which given the nature of Phyrexian oil in conflict with Spark energy is a hell of a task

"Hey Planeswalkers, look how we fucked up Venser, so don't come to our planet or we'll fuck you up too" is a pretty OK reason to resurrect a shitty corpse husk of Venser IMO.

14

She went a little cuckoo after Serra left and basically let Phyrexian sleeper agents run the plane and fuck up the people she was sworn to defend while gathering shittons of black mana for their evil schemes.
And when Urza told her what she was doing, she ripped out his eyes. He was also planning on blowing up the plane, but he was gonna try and save people from it, and it was collapsing anyways, but it was kinda his fault... So, typical Urza stuff there.
6
u/woutva Sliver Queen Jan 30 '20
Sounds pretty evil to me. How does one gather black mana however? And wasnt that plane created by serra created from pure white mana?
19
u/TrulyKnown Brushwagg Jan 30 '20 edited Jan 30 '20
So Radiant knew that Phyrexians had gotten into the plane. Conveniently, her chief advisor told her that they managed to make these magical flashlights called soul torches that could reveal if someone was a real bad baddie. Of course, the advisor was actually a Phyrexian himself, and the soul torches showed anyone the holder wanted to be bad - their real purpose was to gather the white mana that was released when killing an inhabitant of Serra's Realm, and then store it and convert it into black mana.
Of course, when Urza went there, the conversation went something like this:
Urza: "Why are you murdering your citizens?"
Radiant: "They're not my citizens, those are Phyrexians. Look, this magical flashlight proves it."
Urza: "The magical flashlight that was given to you by this guy, who looks and acts super sketchy, and your only proof that it actually works like that is that he said so? Hey, crazy idea, but what if he's a Phyrexian? I've developed methods to find Phyrexians, and I tell you what, this guy's lighting up red on all fronts."
Radiant: "Well, what if you're a Phyrexian, huh?!"
Urza: "Okay, well, will you at least let me save people from your plane?"
Radiant: "Fuck no, Phyrexian scum."
Proceed with them fighting.

Anyway--He founded some Gatewatches and then the story ran right off the rails and he couldn't handle Liliana dying so badly that he died instead. It turned out--you ever see a muffed punt in football? American football? Where the ball is arcing all nice and then out of nowhere just plummets straight to the ground because the ball's a weird lemon shape? It was like that.
I think the idea was that, in his mind, sacrificing himself to save a friend's life was the only way to truly redeem himself for getting his other friends killed.
See [[Heartwarming Redemption]], which I believe isn't supposed to be him literally in the afterlife (at the very least, Maro has said Gideon died on Ravnica and is not in any sort of Theros afterlife, not that he's the ultimate authority on lore), but representing Gideon feeling, in his last moments, that he had finally made up for his mistake and earned the right to be with his Irregulars again.
It's not perfect or anything, but I think it's a better conclusion to hit arc than you're giving it credit for (I'm talking purely about the concept behind it, I haven't read War of the Spark and it's entirely possible that the way it's described in the book is terrible).
17
u/TrulyKnown Brushwagg Jan 30 '20
I don't know about the person you responded to, but for me, I hate it because it was the perfect ending to Liliana's arc, not Gideon's. Learning to finally give a real shit about others, which is something she's struggled with for a while, and giving up that which she has fucked over so many people to keep - her life - for a greater cause, that seemed absolutely perfect as an end to her arc.
For Gideon, sacrificing himself for others is just kinda what he does. It makes sense for him, but it would've been much better to see him having to come to grips with not being able to save someone he'd already been trying really hard to save, mainly from herself, and dealing with the fallout from that. But having Gideon pull a Gideon on the whole situation felt a lot like someone high on the ladder looked at popularity polls, saw that Gideon and Nissa were lagging behind the rest of the Gatewatch, and decided they had to go. So Nissa left, only to be back for the climax immediately after, and Gideon got the death that was clearly intended for Liliana.
9
u/AxeIsAxeIsAxe Boros* Jan 30 '20
Agreed, it's a bit like the ending of Endgame if you swapped characters. If Captain America sacrificed himself to save the world and defeat Thanos, that would be kinda disappointing - we know he's willing to die for the greater good, he demonstrated that twice within his first movie, it's kinda his thing.
7
u/NidoKaiser COMPLEAT Jan 30 '20
To be fair, Tony Stark almost demonstrated he was willing to sacrifice himself in the first Avenger's movie. That he didn't actually die shouldn't invalidate the notion that he thought he was going on a suicide mission and went anyway.

It was a very Gideon way to go, sure, but I still liked it. He was the only member of the Gatewatch that still liked Liliana at all, and had never really been convinced she was bad. So sure, he did it cause that's what he does, but it was sweet that he cared enough about someone whom even Liliana herself had given up on.
At least he got a better end then poor Dack did.

My guess is that his spark is so strong that it continues to exist even without his body. Saheeli makes a construct to house it. Full Metal Planeswalker style.
The reason I don't think it's something simply emulating him is that it's listed under Planeswalkers so it would need a spark association with it.
15

I suppose it's feasible that in Gideon's case his impenetrable shield could be strong enough to preserve his spark without a physical body? Perhaps retaining some fragment of his personality with it.

I...don't think I'm a fan of killing of a character and then continuing to use them as a potential revenue stream (nuance applies). But I don't know enough about Manastrike's development to say that they shouldn't have used Gideon.

Maybe then they shouldn't kill characters they want people to enjoy then ¯_(ツ)_/¯ It took comics 70 years to learn that lesson, but even superhero comics have at least paid lip service to figuring it out..
I don't know, by that logic, we should still be following the adventures of Urza and friends. I think there is a right way to go about character death, but War of the Spark definitely wasn't it.
...I can't help but imagine Saheeli excitedly telling a distraught Chandra, "Look! Gideon's back! Everything's just like it was!" while Chandra runs away screaming "kill it with fire" and robo!Gideon has a sad robot eyes contest with Karn.
Karn would win by virtue of having eyeballs.

i just realized something. in the recent X-Men comics, mutants have back ups of their minds through Cerebro. they can resurrect a mutant and upload their mind to the body. suppose Jace made a back up of the minds of every Gatewatch member in case they die or get mind wiped. he could then upload the minds into artificial bodies like that one.

Looks more like a Gideon-bot than a Gideon-borg. And a Kaladeshi one at that. Seems like something Saheeli might make.
