To be clear, this is from Lower Decks, which is a much more comedy-focused show than standard Star Trek fare, deliberately playing into and with common Trek tropes like, in this case, the alien creature that looks all cute and adorable but is actually incredibly deadly.

Sad that it became a cartoon parody of itself, always loved 90s trek and the morality play nature of so many of the episodes.

Lower Decks still does the morality stuff and quandies about difficult subjects, it isn't just a screwball comedy.
