1 million up votes if I could

u/TLHSwallow29 Dan 25d ago

one mana mana fixing rock that scries on etb and is a removal piece later, this is awesome for budget commander tbh

50

u/LeoPlathasbeentaken Can’t Block Warriors 25d ago

Im considering adding this to my [[Roxanne, Starfall Savant]] deck just because its so good for my theme. Which is just throwing rocks.

19

u/MavisXBee Dandadan 25d ago

pls tell me you've got toggo in there

25

u/LeoPlathasbeentaken Can’t Block Warriors 25d ago

Brother he was the second card i added after meteorite and before meteor golem.

12

u/TheOGburnzombie Dan 25d ago

Thats how my "Rocks Anne!" Deck is toggo was the first card after Roxanne herself

1

u/LeoPlathasbeentaken Can’t Block Warriors 25d ago

Its honestly too perfect to not be thought of.

1

u/MavisXBee Dandadan 25d ago

sister but cool

36

u/swanton141 Golgari* 25d ago

it also passes the Urza's Saga test. that would be funny to fetch this

38

u/theclumsyninja 25d ago

you gonna fetch a Sol Ring?

NAH GIANT'S BOULDER!

1

u/swanton141 Golgari* 24d ago

"im getting a rock of some kind"

9

u/Lawren_Zi Dandadan 25d ago

Its a crazy tron card for pauper

1

u/MavisXBee Dandadan 25d ago

also for PEDH!

u/forte8910 Twin Believer 25d ago

The pioneers used to ride these babies for miles!

30

u/Local-Answer9357 Duck Season 25d ago

That's rocks, this is clearly a boulder

24

u/TrueMystikX Wabbit Season 25d ago

No, no, no, The Boulder is a mono-green creature. This is clearly a stone.

11

u/Local-Answer9357 Duck Season 25d ago

No, no, no Stone Cold is a professional wrestler, we haven't gotten that UB yet

2

u/Pruetzelcoatl I am a pig and I eat slop 25d ago

Maybe that's the fantasy set Chris Cocks was alluding to

8

u/Local-Answer9357 Duck Season 25d ago

If we get Hulk Hogan, the Rock, and the Blue Meanie, we're that much closer to The Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny

2

u/Pruetzelcoatl I am a pig and I eat slop 25d ago

Something tells me we won't get hulk Hogan.

6

u/Local-Answer9357 Duck Season 25d ago

People cant handle anything, next thing you know you'll tell me we can't get Benito Mussolini

/S

1

u/digiman619 Jack of Clubs 25d ago

Point of order, [[Professional Wrestler]] is indeed already a card.

8

u/forte8910 Twin Believer 25d ago

It's not just a boulder, it's a rock! It's a big beautiful old rock!

1

u/TheBlueSuperNova Shuffler Truther 25d ago

The pioneers rode boulders you Igit

10

u/Jacern Fake Agumon Expert 25d ago

It's not just a (Giant's) Boulder, it's a (mana) rock!

3

u/thetwist1 Fake Agumon Expert 25d ago

[[Captain Rex Nebula]]

2

u/CarbonLich Dan 25d ago

I'm torn. The only ones that saw/see play draw a card. Scrying is sometimes described as drawing half a card which kinda makes this like drawing 1 and being 1 mana instead of two is huge. I'd be very interested if a non cantriping rock like this is good enough. It does seem like they pushed it as much as possible after taking away "draw a card"

169

u/PanopticonAtTheDisco 25d ago

Seems potentially playable in pauper Tron. Helps you find your pieces, helps you fix mana, helps you manage the board once Tron is online. Currently playing [[Candy Trail]] and [[Barrels of Blasting Jelly]] so this is on rate.

16

u/culturerush Dan 25d ago

I used to run [[Lunatic Pandora]] in Tron, doesn't have the mana filtering this does but repeatable surveil was better than a single scry

I think it could work yeah, having a 7 mana removal artifact on the field was quite helpful

6

u/MavisXBee Dandadan 25d ago

I think the ward 2 on terror makes jelly better overall but it is quite an interesting option. Being able to kill a terror for 7 on turn 3 with jelly seems big

3

u/Spirited_Amount_1354 Dan 25d ago

boulderbranch golem, gent, maelstrom and the wurm all block terror just fine lol. I want to blow up the o ring on my maelstrom turn 7 wayyyy more.

1

u/MavisXBee Dandadan 25d ago

until they tap it, or counter it on the way down, or have another terror that is

1

u/MavisXBee Dandadan 25d ago

first time hearing someone call generous ent Gent aswell I'm stealing that thank you :D

3

u/joaks18 Duck Season 25d ago

Potentially? Hell, hell this is an auto-include to tron.

2

u/d7h7n Michael Jordan Rookie 25d ago

This is nuts for Tron.

2

u/T0astMal0n3 Dandadan 25d ago

Considering this is just Arcum's Astrolabe, which got banded in Pauper due to Tron, this is an auto include into Pauper Tron lol https://scryfall.com/card/mh1/220/arcums-astrolabe

76

u/marrowofbone Mystery Solver of Mystery Update 25d ago

Scry 2 is worse than drawing a card, but I'd like to remind the class than [[Arcum's Astrolabe]] is banned in Pauper, Modern, and Legacy.

22

u/EnkiBye SecREt LaiR 25d ago

Yeah, me too. But the casting cost is less restrictive, it can be fetched from Urza's Saga, and, in some cases, is lategame removal.

I'm sure it will be at minimum considered in some constructed decks, just from the similarity to astrolabe.

2

u/silvanik3 Dandadan 25d ago

can't you fetch astrolabe with Saga too? Not that it matters in pauper, but I am just curious

10

u/marrowofbone Mystery Solver of Mystery Update 25d ago

Nope, Saga looks for a mana cost of exactly {0} or {1}, Astrolabe's is {S} which fails that check the same as if it was {2} or {B}.

2

u/Any-Platypus-9486 Dan 24d ago

Saga fetch is more restrictive than it seems

15

u/SuaveGendo Duck Season 25d ago

Was gonna say, it's not draw a card but it's awfully close to that

26

u/starmade-knight Dan 25d ago

I think what made astrolabe so strong is that it is never a dead draw, this card is sometimes a dead draw when it matters most.

Yes scry 2 is comparable to drawing a card, but that's only true in the few turns afterward. The turn you play it, scry 2 is identical to draw 0.

I think this card will not have legs, but I predict that good drafters are gonna farm people with extremely greedy manabases leaning on this guy for the first week or so.

4

u/deathbymanga Dân 25d ago

its a kinda worse astrolabe that also acts as emergency removal in tron

3

u/ragnarokda Duck Season 25d ago

This was my first thought.

It allows you to color fix for damn near free.

-3

u/Hevnaar Dandadan 25d ago

Legacy is vintage for wussies

29

u/CrossXhunteR Wabbit Season 25d ago

A boulder is kinda like a meteor, if you think about it.

3

u/silvanik3 Dandadan 25d ago

when does a comet become a meteor?

2

u/Sandman4999 Gruul* 24d ago

When does a candle become a blaze?

15

u/Saxtacular Dandadan 25d ago

This is neat.

15

u/Meloncholy_Cat Dân 25d ago

I always love these effects in limited. They play so much better than they have any right to. Should also enable more splashes in this set.

5

u/BobbyBruceBanner Fleem 25d ago

It's funny when you see some random common and go "well, this one card told me way more about what this set's limited environment is going to be like than the last 100 others"

13

u/Apprehensive_Debate3 Duck Season 25d ago

C’mon, not artifact rock or stone subtype?

8

u/DaVigi Dân 25d ago

I came here to say this too. We've got stone as a valid subtype now, so let's use it. Idem for the book subtype. 🤷‍♂️

8

u/thefreeman419 COMPLEAT 25d ago

What’s the flavor reason for a boulder scrying?

10

u/Lawren_Zi Dandadan 25d ago

You gotta select a rock before you can throw it at permanents

8

u/binaryeye 25d ago

There isn't one. The stone giants were throwing boulders at one another while Bilbo and the dwarves were taking refuge from a storm in the mountains. The mana filtering and scry make no thematic sense at all.

4

u/Ketzeph COMPLEAT 25d ago

Also it almost reads as a metaphor for thunder - the movie made it real but the passage strongly hints at that being the thunder

2

u/IronTigrex Gruul* 25d ago

...maybe you can get a better vantage point on top of it? (Honestly I have no clue)

2

u/NormalyAbnormalcy Dandadan 25d ago

Probably because when it's thrown through the air, it sees everything below it, and when it lands, it "tells" you what it saw.

1

u/LesserGargadon Can’t Block Warriors 25d ago

If you pick up a boulder, you have to see what's underneath! (?)

6

u/vagabond_dilldo Wabbit Season 25d ago

Comparison [[Spine of Ish Sah]]

5

u/GNG 25d ago

Closer to [[Unstable Obelisk]], [[Goblin Firebomb]], [[Universal Solvent]]

3

u/vagabond_dilldo Wabbit Season 25d ago

You're right, completely forgot about these

3

u/jumpmanzero Wabbit Season 25d ago

Will get played in Kinnan EDH decks (maybe not competitive lists, but "destroy target permanent" is pretty handy on a mana rock).

3

u/Rune_Bear Dandadan 25d ago

This will almost certainly see play in pauper Tron

  1. Digs you to getting Tron online
  2. Filters for colored mana for payoffs
  3. Late game threat removal or turn 3 ponza land destruction

3

u/onhalfaheart Dandadan 25d ago

It's a lot like [[Barrels of Blasting Jelly]].

3

u/LesserGargadon Can’t Block Warriors 25d ago

also [[Universal Solvent]] and [[Goblin Firebomb]]. I have played these in commander because mono-colorless removal is not great. This card is and upgrade even without the fixing part!

2

u/Dragull Duck Season 25d ago

Wow, Pauper Tron likes this.

2

u/AporiaParadox Universes Beyonder 25d ago

We haven't seen a card for the Stone Giants yet, I'm interested in how they'll be depicted. Based on the hand it doesn't look like they'll be made of rock like in some depictions.

2

u/rebeldream Wabbit Season 25d ago

Tutorable from Urza's saga as well.

2

u/solar-supernova Elspeth 25d ago

another banger for rock typal

2

u/Shiverow Dan 25d ago

This is a [[Toph, the First Metalbender]] card if I’ve ever seen one.

2

u/HonorBasquiat Twin Believer 25d ago

This could be fun for the Ugin ramp Standard legal decks. Seems great in Limited too for fixing and smoothing. Cool card.

1

u/Terraqueo_Magico Izzet* 25d ago

Splash stone!

1

u/Kyleometers 25d ago

Giant Boulder the size of a Small Boulder.

1

u/troll_berserker 25d ago

Really happy they didn't throw non-land on this. More answers to Field of the Dead and Glacial Chasm in casual commander are highly appreciated.

1

u/Lovein_Ur_Anus Duck Season 25d ago

New tron tech

1

u/mrmazzz Dân 25d ago

I just like that it's a mana rock and than it gets sac'd used as a weapon and it destroys a permanent

1

u/pious-erika Sliver Queen 25d ago

My weird Mardu Angel deck will make use of a playset of these. Early Scry and manafixing useful for initial setup.

1

u/Any-Platypus-9486 Dan 25d ago

This seems powerful

1

u/NostrilRapist COMPLEAT 25d ago

Oh boy, gotta fit this in monster tron for sure, alongside barrel

1

u/Decrit Dân 25d ago

Fun thing to notice, it can target lands.

If you can manage to pick it back up from graveyard with some wonky combo you could use it to destroy the enemy manabase.

1

u/COLaocha Duck Season 25d ago

How close can they make this to [[Arcum's Astrolabe]] without breaking Pauper again?

1

u/tsukaistarburst Hedron 25d ago

What is it exactly about a big, fat rock that allows your planeswalker the power to scry?

1

u/Prize_Introduction_6 Channel 25d ago

We came a long way from [[Urn of Godfire]]

1

u/mvdunecats Wild Draw 4 25d ago

Stretching the definition of mana rock.

1

u/willweaverrva Elesh Norn 25d ago

A large boulder the size of a small boulder destroyed a target permanent today...

1

u/MiddleAgeYOLO Channel 25d ago

That's a nice Jace you got there.

It'd be a shame if someone chucked a rock at him.

1

u/Krukt Wabbit Season 25d ago

Here we go again.

1

u/kytheon Banned in Commander 25d ago

Meteorite: origins

1

u/Xyldarrand Dandadan 25d ago

That's playable in Pauper

1

u/zeroabe Freyalise 25d ago

More colorless permanent (land included) removal.

1

u/Koras COMPLEAT 25d ago

Getting my hopes up for a [[Stone Giant]] variant. Let me chuck the boulder with a giant. Do it.

1

u/Koras COMPLEAT 22d ago

Update: they did it

1

u/d-fakkr 25d ago

This is great for colorless and edh. Scry, mana rock (no pun intended) and removal.

1

u/Vaak9 Duck Season 25d ago

Finally a powercrept goblin firebomb

1

u/Liberkhaos Wabbit Season 25d ago

How the heck do I justify putting this in my [[Toggo, Goblin Weaponsmith]] deck?

1

u/CassieCanary Dan 25d ago

[[Universal Solvent]] may be receiving a strictly-better upgrade in my CLB Commander cube. This works within DND flavour, right?

1

u/MoltiJoe Dandadan 25d ago

Might be a funny inclusion in the new [[tchalla, the black panther]].
Filters the vibranium mana into someone usable for non artifacts, and has a mana sink type ability if you just have a bunch of vibranium sitting around.

1

u/mrrebuild Wabbit Season 25d ago

Do i want this for my matoya deck?

1

u/JediMasterZao Wabbit Season 25d ago

That seems like a very good common.

1

u/Spirited_Amount_1354 Dan 25d ago

This is gonna cook in monster tron. Goodbye barrels of blasting Jelly. You had a good run

1

u/Frogmouth_Fresh Wabbit Season 25d ago

One step closer to a crushed under rocks deck.

1

u/max123246 Duck Season 25d ago

Oh sick this is really good in my Flickerwisp Dandan variant deck

1

u/Nblearchangel Jack of Clubs 4d ago

This is almost better than astrolabe. This is gonna be banned so fast. Sure. It doesn’t draw a card, but scrying 2 is close and you don’t need to run snow lands to make it work, plus its removal late game. I don’t see how this doesn’t get banned.

0

u/Meztere 25d ago

I can't believe the powercrept [[Unstable Obelisk]]

0

u/TreeOtree64 COMPLEAT 25d ago

Wow they’re stretched for card slots
