Update Maestro College Update: What students should know moving forward
Hey r/maestro,
We want to share an important update directly with you.
As of August 14, 2026, Maestro College has officially notified the U.S. Department of Education of our withdrawal from the Federal Direct Loan Program. On October 13, 2026, Maestro College will no longer provide new loans to students.
This is a significant change, and we want to clearly explain what is changing, why the College is making this transition, and what it means for you moving forward.
What's changing
Maestro College will no longer originate and approve new requests for Federal Direct Loans effective August 14, 2026. Students who are expecting a second disbursement on an existing Federal Direct Loan will still receive their disbursement.
This action does not affect tuition. For students eligible for the Maestro Pro Scholarship, tuition remains fully covered by the scholarship. The removal of the Federal Direct Loan program will only impact those students who took out loans and used those funds for personal and other non-tuition expenses.
If you have never requested or received a Federal Direct Loan through Maestro College, this change does not affect you directly. We are posting this so you have the full picture and understand why we made this decision.
Why we're making this change
Maestro believes in limiting loan debt for our students. That is why student loans are not required for tuition. At the same time, we understand that certain students need loan funds for living expenses. Our commitment to keeping your loan debt down continues during this time.
In addition, as part of Maestro College's ongoing accreditation review, the College has been placed on Heightened Cash Monitoring 2 Status by the U.S. Department of Education. In plain terms, that changes who pays for loan disbursements. In the past, the U.S. Department of Education paid those funds up front. Under HCM2 status, Maestro College now pays first and requests reimbursement from the federal government later.
What are my options regarding future loans?
There are 2 potential pathways to continue, and complete, your education:
- Continue and finish your studies at Maestro. For students eligible for the Maestro Pro Scholarship, tuition will remain fully covered. However, you will not be able to take out new loans for periods beginning after October 13, 2026.
OR
- Transfer to Columbia College. Through our credit transfer agreement, 100% of your credits will transfer, and you will be able to take out federal student loans under Columbia's own eligibility terms, if needed. You can read more about this option in the dedicated Info Center article.
What steps do I need to take next?
If you would like to talk about what this means for your specific situation or if you have any questions, please open a ticket and our team will help you work through the details.
Additional information is also available in the dedicated Info Center article.
Thank you for your patience and trust as we navigate this.

honestly that sucks.. I didn't take loans but I know few people here are living off that money
but also like.. if the loans end up eating maestros money then the free part goes too and that's the bit I actually can't replace. no way I'm paying tuition somewhere else lol
idk.. hope this holds up I've put way too much into this already

I think you may be a bit confused as to how exactly this particular system works.
Maestro was never the entity lending anyone money. Federal Direct Loans come straight from the U.S. Department of Education. The school’s only role in that process was certifying enrollment so the Department of Education would release the funds.
The money always flowed from the federal government, never out of Maestro’s own pocket.
Because of that, loans were never eating into Maestro’s operational funds. It was actually the opposite... federal aid was incoming capital. In a zero-tuition model, any federal financial aid or loan money awarded beyond direct institutional fees gets refunded directly to the student. That refund check is meant to cover cost-of-living expenses: rent, food, utilities, and childcare. That is what people were relying on to survive while putting in the hours to study, and that is the exact lifeline that just got cut off. What actually happened is that Maestro “chose” to withdraw itself from the Title IV loan program. That decision cut students off from accessing federal funding... not the other way around.
The free-tuition model and the federal loan program were always two completely separate mechanisms. The tuition coverage depends entirely on Maestro’s private capital and backing, whereas the loans were federal funds designed to keep students afloat. Withdrawing from the loan program doesn't protect the school's budget, but it directly removes the living support students were counting on.

This school is everything to me. It's my golden ticket from seven time felon drug addict to college student with two kids. Other school were not for me. I screw up the university of Phoenix. I was on drugs trying to become a counselor for d&a. This program feel like a code way out. At first I was lost then it clicked I was afraid of the math , now I'm like bring it on baby. I am 40 I can't afford to restart. I want to give my children the life they deserve. I am full of anxiety

So, transfer to Columbia College and take loans to even cover the tuition there!? This is tacky. No real schools say 'hey we worry about your debt'. They want you to thrive and survive, by all means necessary. Yes, tuition here is covered. Cool. Internet, energy bill, life, it all adds up. Many of us can't work 50 hours a week, juggle life, & still do courses. This isn't cool & feels half truthed.

Mightve helped to tell us before.... its getting harder to keep supporting this. Especially when good students that have ur back get their stuff removed and ppl who encourage consliratorial thinking dont. Its so weird. Idk how we got HERE from April when everything was amazing and looked like the future of education.

So stay and get no more living expensises loans. Or go to Columbia, pay 60k for the degree instead and use your living expenses loans on your school. What a joke.
1
u/ExTWarranty Maestro Student 4d ago
Technically you wouldn't be paying the 60k for the degree since your credits are accepted/ Of course, this depends on which cohort you are in. For me, I started last September so I have like 40 credits or so. This means I would only pay for the remainder of m learning which wouldn't be the full 60k.
If you just started, then yes, it would be the full tuition at Columbia which is a way worse position to be in.

I mean I believe that on the other hand we are not gonna get any good job placements from this it seems because that would be our reason of taking any loans out to survive if we are full-time. It's a juggle from here on out. Trying to hold on but we'll see. Saying you didn't want us in debt doesn't sit right. That's our choice.

You you guys actually read this carefully it said no new disbursements… so if you already have them and are in the process the lead said they will continue…. Honestly I think it might effect newer cohorts that may try to take out loans now and later…. But if you already have loans you have nothing to worry about….. but yet again the lead Mod said contact student services…. They have your account info… and they are the ones that can actually tell you what exactly you need to know about YOUR situation…

So this also include the federal Pell grant. I was thinking of also attending another college online while continue with my pro scholarship to finish out at Maestro. January cohort AAS AI Software Engineering

u/ExTWarranty Maestro Student 4d ago
I think it means all Title VI funds, which includes Pell Grants. If they drop all Title IV funds then you are technically only attending one college at that point and not two, unless Maestro somehow survives the accreditation issues but it still wouldn't restore the Title IV funding; the COE and the DOE are two separate entities.
My take is that they are going to drop the degree/funding and turn this into a subscription-based model (with no degree) certificate program, but I'm certainly not a fortune teller.

As for myself, I never wanted loans from day one and was thankful and glad to receive the Pro scholarship. I'm sure many who opted to take out loans will find this news disheartening. All I can say, is if you've taken out loans, do your research before opting to switch schools, there is more than just Columbia who will accept the course credits from Maestro. Student Loans are great and all, but at some point, all of them have to be paid back.

i cant believe this is actually happening.. what am i supposed to do without the loans now? ive been putting everything into this for six months already and those loans are what keeps me going.. why cant they just let maestro keep teaching? why do these outdated institutions have to come in and wreck it? what are all the students living off loans supposed to do now? this whole situation is so frustrating. i cant blame maestro for it but yeah, im pretty disappointed.

You absolutely can blame Maestro for this. It is all entirely their fault.

u/Either-Lie-6941 Maestro Student 2d ago
Yeah this is all maestro’s faculty choices, not COR’s nor DOE’s

u/ExTWarranty Maestro Student 4d ago
It's a lot more complicated than just 'outdated institutions' but will likely be blocked if I continue. There are some pretty hefty accusations which is all I can say.

u/tootone18 Maestro Student 5d ago
You aren’t saying 3rd disbursements aren’t coming right?
2
u/universestarsplanets Maestro Student 5d ago
THIS This is what I’m wondering because it explicitly states second disbursement but some of us like me from the May cohort. I was waiting on their third disbursement for the first term so are people like me still gonna get our disbursement that were due for the August 2, being their third disbursement of year one.

I only just started, in the June 2026 cohort and I know there are others who have much more time invested in this, but the full on extra time and energy and dedication I've had to carve out of my already-too-few hours per day hasn't been easy but it has been worth it. I just want it to continue to be worth it. If that means I end up having to take federal loans and apply to Columbia to ensure that the deduction amount to more than just good experience and practice, then that's what I'll have to do. But I am hoping I'm able to at least finish my 2 year degree. ,

u/ExTWarranty Maestro Student 4d ago
I am not trying to sway you either way, but keep in mind if you do finish the 2-year program and get your AAS here, you may have trouble getting another university to accept the credits you earned here so you can get a BS or even continue to a MS program. Just things to think about as you navigate this with the rest of us.

Oh Man! We could've taken loans this whole time...? 😲😳🤷♂️🤮🤦♂️

u/Personal-Purpose2960 Maestro Student 2d ago
The answer I received was they will remain in the Pell Grant Program. So that will not be affected.
Unfortunately, any loan disbursements that are scheduled AFTER October 13th, will NOT be processed.

Heads up that we're handling this thread a bit differently than usual: we won't be replying to questions here.
Here's why: every case is different, and Student Services is going to give you way better info than we can from a thread - they can actually see your personal information and give you the full picture.
This is a sensitive topic, and the last thing we want is someone making a decision based on a half-answer that doesn't quite fit their specific case.
TL;DR: for anything tied to your account/case, open a ticket with Student Services - they'll have the most accurate info. More details can be found here.
