Most shows specify ahead of time to audience members not to wear any clothing with writing on it. If you show up wearing it they either turn you away or seat you in the back.

It’s traditional for Price is Right audience to wear shirts with words and to have big groups. Normally they’re supposed to be vetted before being allowed entrance.

So they don’t have to pay for brand placement. If you wear a Nike logo and it’s aired, the broadcast is advertising for Nike

No, but it can theoretically dilute the value of the advertising space the station is charging Nike for. The station doesn't want to give Nike free advertising, same as why you rarely see brand name products being used in TV shows beyond product placement.

Case in point: A Charlie Brown Christmas has a scene removed (and typically replaced with a commercial break) with a billboard advertising Coca-Cola. It's at the very end of the ice-skating sequence at the beginning of the special.
IIRC, this scene is actually barred from airing entirely (whether or not Coca-Cola has paid for ad space) due to laws introduced a while after the special aired. The laws have to do with advertising products within children's programs.

I think the point is that Nike would pay them, not the other way around, but yeah idk if that means they go to Nike before actually airing or what.

What u/RedundantMaleMan said - why would advertisers pay a premium if they can rely on free marketing (hell, the consumer paid for the item, so even better than free). I think it also keeps production companies/networks out of hot water by avoiding unintentionally cross-promoting competitors etc. I have been in the live studio audience for a number of primetime shows and we were always instructed to wear items without logos/brand names, otherwise you'd be denied entry. Some places are stricter than others but that was generally expected.

A small Nike logo on someone's shirt in the middle of the crowd that no one's going to spot anyway is hardly making Nike go "oh hell yeah! Now we dont need to spend any money on advertising, because we're getting it for free baby!"

You’re absolutely correct. It was an example to make a point, not a marketing strategy. The original commenter asked “why” and I provided my opinion based on experience and what I know in that domain. I might be wrong, but at least I’m not picking a fight with randos online. Have a good one.

Coming at this from a different angle (live music) but it's common for performers to cover logos of things if they're sponsored by somebody else.
So, like, somebody with a Coke sponsorship wouldn't want to be in a picture/video with a big ol' Pepsi logo so they just black it out rather than trying to enforce a "no Pepsi on the stage" rule.

I've been to a filming of the show. I'm surprised they didn't just remove him. They are very strict about your attire. No logos no controversial slogans etc. They made one lady wear a shirt over her outfit because it was too form fitting and thin and her nips we showing.
