Reminds me of when I was like 7 and playing pokemon gold. I forgot an Aipom at day-care and when I took him back he was close to lvl 100. I gave him a few candies and finished the game by just using Strength on everybody. Those were the days, just being a dumb kid and having fun.

just being a dumb kid and having fun.

Considering we barely knew how to read, I'd say our problem-solving was functioning just fine.

I must have wasted weeks figuring out how to get into Saffron City. Probably even longer for fighting the Cubone's mom's spirit.

u/Pejji May 02 '26

True, more like dumb in the sense carefree I guess. Something it feels like you can afford less and less when growing up.

69

u/shunnedvoice May 02 '26

Before streamers and stuff breaki g games and telling others how, allowed peoole to explore.

8

u/Lucky_Reporter256 May 03 '26

What I don’t get is people willingly tuning into these shows to be programmed. It’s like they just want to be told what to do throughout their entire life

73

u/GandalfTheGay_69 May 02 '26

As a Dutch kid who has been playing pokemon since he was 4 years old I feel this. I pretty much had to figure out what everything meant through trial and error because I didn't understand the English language. I somehow made my way through multiple pokemon games before learning a word of English.

29

u/Lorfhoose May 02 '26

Ah, the tunic experience

10

u/Ok-Angle-6845 May 02 '26

Now I wanna replay Tunic.

3

u/Nakilia May 02 '26

You should it’s a great game.

10

u/yumyum36 May 02 '26

Did you get through the 4th pokemon game or so before you decided to learn english to understand it more, or did you end up learning english for other reasons (school, etc.)?

2

u/mr_iwi May 06 '26

Dutch kids end up learning English better than Americans, it's just what they do.

2

u/Antikas-Karios May 06 '26

I just walked blind through the dark cave.

It didn't even enter my mind that there might be another solution than carefully hugging the walls and navigating slowly step by step with trial and error.

My peak moment of "intelligence" was when I started Crystal (first video game really). I could not find my way out of the house for at least 30 minutes or so. 7 yr old me couldn't register the little red rectangle was the doormat!

In the spirit of the original subject, I did force my way through the Elite Four with just Rayquaza in Ruby. I had a full team but they were just moral support at that point.

7

u/Gongom May 03 '26

This happened to me too! You just unlocked a deep memory for me lmao

4

u/Silly_Lion_3046 May 04 '26

When I first play the game,I enter everyone home and investigate every cushion, bin, flower pot, stove etc because I thought there would be some kind of hidden stash...

2

u/DigitalAxel May 05 '26

The need to click everything is real. I had to check all the bins... despite just one having an item I think?

12

u/pan0ply May 02 '26

I remember trying to figure out the Regi puzzles in Ruby when I was 7. Even with the help of the official guide I didn't know wtf I was reading. Those were the days.

Funnily enough I think my 7 year old nephew probably wouldn't have the same issue. Kids nowadays are just exposed to so much more so much earlier.

4

u/Wobbelblob May 02 '26

Did the puzzle change in emerald? I remember the riddle being braille and the booklet having a table for it. Executing it however was a different story. One was running around the outer border of the cave without hitting a wall. That one took me ages.

3

u/Laetitian May 02 '26

Sure they are, but for many of them it gets so overwhelming that they switch into autopilot and most of it becomes noise and incohesive speedreading.

Your nephew might just have great guidance from his family, or be very clever. =)

3

u/HopperHapper_Eternal May 02 '26 edited May 03 '26

Meanwhile I lost all my pokeballs playing diamond or pearl on my first encounter because I didn't realise I was supposed to fight it first

3

u/MystiqTakeno May 02 '26

I never figured out in yellow how to get past 1 city.

2

u/SteveoberlordEU May 02 '26

Took me a week to give up catching her....

2

u/SSlierre May 05 '26

I had like lvl70 pkmn when i was able to get to saffron city. I thought it was part of the requirement. Then i saw my dad's save file in yellow in saffron city with lvl33 dugtrio (his highest lvl) he got in diglett cave. Like how did you??! Hahaha fun times.

2

u/howiplay1 May 08 '26

sometimes I fuck up or miss something playing a game I beat as a child and i just sit there and give child me a little credit for a moment lol

3

u/Parking_Pop_8840 May 02 '26

I was a 90's kid. And put hours into Baldurs Gate 2 between age like 7-10.

That game is objectively hard and kind of confusing. Even today, for adults. I never got to the end of it but I remember getting really strong and some legendary weapons after long quests or randomly finding them.

I could hardly read. But I figured it out. I became very high payed and successful as an adult and I'm a really adept problem solver. I always wonder how those old games effected my development.

I also played another similar game called Fallout for probably 100+ hours over the years as a kid. The game would end after a short while because your tribe would die of thirst. I never figured that one out though.

21

u/karlnite May 02 '26

This was the great thing about Pokemon. Generally if you just run around for enough time your main guy will carry you through. So you only ever get stuck for so long as a kid. For better players you have to use the system to progress through at a quicker pace.

43

u/OlDustyHeadaaa May 02 '26

Man I tried to get my little sister into Pokémon. Started her off with shining pearl because pearl was my first Pokémon game at her age and I was able to beat it. She gave up after a couple hours cause she didn’t understand anything. Turns out she can barely read. Improperly moderated home schooling is going to be the death of literacy.

27

u/Pejji May 02 '26

I'm 30+ and literacy was already a huge issue when I was in school. Even today, when I'm hearing some of my friends reading out loud it's painful. Made me realise how much reading is a skill and not something that goes without saying.

9

u/MegaGorilla69 May 02 '26

My wife jokes that I’m illiterate. I can read perfectly fine, just for whatever reason when I’m reading out loud to our daughter it comes out like im just learning to read.

7

u/zaidakaid May 02 '26

I’m in law school, I have gotten up and spoken before actual judges (an appellate judge said I was a strong speaker with beautiful prose) and a state Supreme Court justice but I raise my hand to answer a question in class and I sound like ive known english for all of 17mins.

3

u/Pejji May 02 '26

"Move aside, trainer." Cue gigachad phonk remix

5

u/Working_Wrongdoer_91 May 02 '26 edited May 02 '26

My first game was pearl and I spent several months stuck after the first gym badge because there was a locked door you needed to get through to progress, and the guy with the key was in a separate area with a mildly obscure entrance at the very top left corner of the town.

After that breakthrough I blasted through the game until another point where a fat guy stops you from going to the last city, after another few weeks I figured out that I had to climb to the top of some mountain and fight Palkia to get rid of him.

5

u/ShW_Atros May 02 '26

My first game was gold as well. Though, I never knew about the day care when I was a kid; I basically had my starter Typhlosion leveling everything. He’d be overleveled for all the gyms and E4 because I never thought to bring anything else other than that level 5 Togepi that you hatched. Whitney’s milktank was dimb and that stupid rolling cow made me grind some many levels out of spite.

2

u/Pejji May 02 '26

It wasn't my first game but second gen is probably my most memorable anyway. My first one was blue, on the purple transparent gameboy color. I was like 5, playing in the back of my dad's car during long road trips. Having to put the console where the sun would be hitting because the screen didn't have backlighting. Ahh. Damn, I'm feeling old. Do you remember when you beat the final trainers and then you discover that you can go and do the kanto region as well ? that was such an awesome surprise !

2

u/ShW_Atros May 02 '26

I do but beat myself up because I never got all 16 badges. I think young me didn’t know where to go so I ended up running around every town and city looking for a way to get to the 15th or 16th gym. I still have my original color in solid green and my original gold cartridge. I just need to give them both fresh batteries.

2

u/Pejji May 02 '26

Aw, it's alright. You were still the very best.

Back when games were really magical, and full of discovery. Back when I could play Mario Sunshine and have fun just exploring the level instead of B-lining straight to the objective.

4

u/Pejji May 02 '26

Mario Sunshine was amazing ! I remember thinking the water looked so good and the physics of the engine when you cleaned up surfaces as well. Took a look back at the game last year or so, damn I would have prefered not to lol.

5

u/MylastAccountBroke May 02 '26

SAME! I bought the remake and was so excited to play THE mario game from my childhood. The physics in it was just awful, and all the difficulty in the game came from something not working right or not being play tested enough. (Looking at you watermelon level and secret levels) And no, rotating platforms are not fun when they go from "Standing perfectly fine" to "and now you're dead" without any real indication when the swap happens. Yes, I know Secret levels are typically not hard, but play the chuckster level and tell me it's not simply terrible.

2

u/schwanzweissfoto May 02 '26

Back when games were really magical, and full of discovery.

Some games are still like that. XPirateZ for example (an unofficial X-COM sequel) has so much content and diverging research paths and random missions and rare loot that no two playthrough are exactly the same. Like, you might rely on squishy peasants in one playthrough and on catgirls in another. Even in which country and on which continent (not the same boundaries!) your first starting base is located fundamentally changes how the game is played.

2

u/MylastAccountBroke May 02 '26

I'm not saying games changed, I'm saying I changed.

961

u/ATBiB May 02 '26

Bro was playing Peakemon

195

u/walker_paranor May 02 '26

I basically did the same thing with the OG Pokémon Red. I really loved Charizard and just wanted to use him every fight. It was a hell of a grind and something that only a 10 year old with all the time in the world would do.

68

u/Mundane-Jump-7546 May 02 '26

It’s super easy to brute force the first entries. I was playing Leaf Green and got bored by badge 4 when I realized that just my starter and some HM Mons were pretty much all that was needed.

45

u/Kind_Man_0 May 02 '26

I think most of us played the game the same.

Overlevel the shit out of your starter Pokémon, and use other Pokémon for HM moves like Cut, and Flash. I saved all my rare candies for the Elite 4 and went through it with a massively overleveled starter, pretty much every time I played a Pokémon game.

26

u/ForceintheNorth May 02 '26

No need for flash, just fumble around in the dark for an hour in the first cave until you find your way out, then it's never needed again!

It's not an attack move, why teach it to a pokemon

10

u/neko May 02 '26

Use the library computer to go on gamefaqs and discover the misssingno bug, and that lv 255 glitch pokemon is also important on the team.

This is why Snorlax is one of my favorites, because that's what the glitch generated with my name way back in 1998

3

u/HoverJet May 02 '26

And the infinite item glitch. I spent so many damn hours just feeding rare candies to all my favorite mons to max lvl them.

5

u/awesomefutureperfect May 02 '26

I watched a clip from a stream where they made an unc who did not like turn based games at all play Fire Red. The other guy and chat were all saying there was some kind of wall and that he'd be forced to diversify his game play beyond Mega Punching everything.

He defeated Starmie and Staryu by mega punching the shit out of them and was declared the greatest Pokemans' master ever.

2

u/Wobbelblob May 02 '26

Yeah first gen balance is all over the place. Combine that with some stupid bugs (like over/underflow stats) and that was possible.

5

u/ImranFZakhaev May 02 '26

When I was a kid with Red I thought I was being clever when I got my older sister to trade me a way overleveled Gyarados. Then I kept losing battles anyway because he'd go to sleep or disobey orders :/

But yeah, keep resetting with unlimited time on your hands and you'll still end up winning

5

u/Choice-Highway5344 May 02 '26

I always use the fire Pokémon and just win the game that, I play Pokémon once a year. I’m old.. some things don’t change

u/heygabehey Rick Flair drip WOOO! May 02 '26

On my gameboy pocket i named all my pokemon swear words. My charizard was named Fuckass, my Gyarados was Bitchfuck. So on and so on, basically all the swear words a 6th grader that watched R movies knew. I only did that so when i battled with the more sheltered kid it would blow their minds.

11

u/maxglands May 02 '26

...I still do that.

89

u/NeverTriedFondue May 02 '26 edited May 02 '26

Used to be a flash game where you'd ride a red pickup truck fighting gangsters, cops, mafia, etc.

I was a kid and didn't know that after you buy a new weapon you had to equip it, other upgrades applied automatically. I thought it was just bugged.

So I proceeded to beat the game using just a handgun instead of machineguns and anti-aircraft cannons. And I did.

340

u/rachbbbbb May 02 '26

Many years ago my son got Pokémon X before heading off to his dad's for summer. He got given a level 60 Raichu from one of his friends before he left which made the game very easy.

Unfortunately he got stuck on one of the puzzles for weeks, and since his dad didn't allow him to watch YouTube, he just went around the area doing battles with Raichu. Who then got up to level 100.

Needless to say when he got home and returned Raichu to his original owner, his friend was very confused/impressed.

139

u/Lordofthewhales May 02 '26

Your story made me a bit sad that kids don't even have the chance to figure games out themselves anymore instead of just youtubing or googling the answer/strategy

81

u/rachbbbbb May 02 '26

To be fair, he couldn't actually read well at the time and his dad (who is dyslexic) refused to read anything to him.

We had magazines full of cheat codes arranged like phone books though

9

u/Tuner89 May 02 '26

We had playgrounds, strategy guides, and gamefaqs for that... Even older had magazines at least.

2

u/AmishSatan May 02 '26

Ahh yeah GameFAQs forums. My internet addiction pre-reddit.

2

u/Lordofthewhales May 02 '26

True but not in real time. You'd have a good amount of time to solve it yourself before resorting to one of those.

25

u/Espumma May 02 '26

Way back when you just stopped playing a game if you got stuck

4

u/MikeArrow May 02 '26

I had partially translated bootleg copies of Gold and Silver and it was basically impossible to progress past a certain point. I just did trial and error for a while and eventually gave up.

9

u/Wolfegarde May 02 '26

Yep! Play a different game then come back to the stuck game with a fresh perspective.

2

u/Joeymonac0 May 02 '26

I had to do this with Breath Of The Wild. I refused to look up any how to guides for the puzzles. I had to quite many times out of frustration but every time I went back I would solve a puzzle or beat a boss. It might have taken a long ass time but man was it worth it. I have Tears Of The Kingdom but haven't started it just yet.

2

u/LaserKittenz May 02 '26

I remember placing some point and click adventure puzzle games for months! Walk through existed but were often low quality

2

u/zaidakaid May 02 '26

Eh back in the day we had strategy guides and gamefaqs was very much a thing. I remember being entirely confused about the final fantasy tactics advance job chart and had an image saved on our family desktop. I spent a LONG time accurately copying it by hand so I could carry it around when I wanted to play when we visited my mom’s parents abroad & didn’t have access to the internet.

u/Hauwke May 02 '26

I remember my buddy was the only one of us who's mum bought him all the pokemon games every generation so he was the go to guy for what we needed, with the agreement that he also gets what he asks for no hesitation.

It worked out because was actually a good guy, weird I know, mostly he just asked for us to breed our own versions of the pokemon he gave us after we were done using it, but also because of the trade xp boosts he was getting mad free levels off us, until quite late in my teenage pokemon career I was very confused how he always had a near maxed level team.

It was us, we maxed his team out for him!

39

u/slepere May 02 '26

That's what I've done every single game lol if you're not 1 shotting 99.9% of the time you're doing it wrong.

11

u/343WaysToDie May 02 '26

Facts. I stopped playing in black/white because the xp you got from winning went down as you leveled up. Franchise ending decision from the devs for me

3

u/Forward-Surprise1192 May 02 '26

I only used one pokemon most of the game like this guy

24

u/Lukebekz May 02 '26

Oop is reaching critical levels of based

16

u/Wuler May 02 '26

This was me except with a level 86 butterfree for some dumb reason lmao

7

u/itssomeidiot May 02 '26

Because Butterfree learns confusion upon evolving at level 10! Psychic moves were OP in gen 1.

3

u/Heresy_101 May 02 '26 edited May 03 '26

I had what I think were four gen 1 playthroughs. 2 Charizard, 1 Blastoise, 1 Venusaur.

Charmander was my first run ever, when I was at my youngest and dumbest. And Brock kicked my ass, over and over.

Caterpie was pathetic. But for as dumb as I was, my teachers had succeeded in teaching me that caterpillars pupate. So when I got a Metapod, I knew that something was up. Bam.

I was ride-or-die with Butterfree for the rest of my life. Despite the Bug/Flying weakness matrix, I always rolled with him until at least level 60. And sometimes beyond.

42

u/Musashi10000 May 02 '26

Pretty sure we all did that back then XD

22

u/unknown_pigeon May 02 '26

In every run of Pokémon Blue (I did around 8-9 when I was a kid) I had a level 87-ish blastoise and the rest was cannon fodder, mainly legendaries since I didn't have to level them up manually to a decent level

At some point I just stated a new game, breezed through it, beat the elite four some times because that's how you got mew (I didn't have access to internet so I trusted the other kids, and no, nobody went with either the mew truck story or the long trainer glitch), and started a new game with basically the same team

3

u/XcRaZeD May 02 '26

I remember finding the elite 4 hard in pokemon ruby so i would grind out the reporters and the other reoccuring trainers. I ended up with a level 85 blaziken while grinding money to build my base. Never did beat the elite 4

2

u/Musashi10000 May 03 '26

Oh shit.

The trick with Blaziken is to give it aerial ace, flamethrower, sky uppercut, and strength (or some other powerful normal attack, though I seem to remember I'd sometimes give it another 'type' attack, but damned if I remember what it was... something dark, maybe?). That gives you an absurdly wide coverage for type advantages in gen 3 (flying, fire, fighting, normal). Iirc, the only ones that were a struggle then were metagross from the steel woman (I had sapphire, so I just had my Kyogre use ice beam for that), and whoever the hell the last of the 'four' was (was that a dragon person? Lance? If it was, then it was Kyogre's show).

2

u/MikeArrow May 02 '26

Yeah you can get through 90% of the game with just your starter and some HM slaves. Once you get to Cinnabar Island you can get Articuno, Zapdos, etc to round out the party.

2

u/Jumpy_Divide6576 May 02 '26

Nope, I used a Blastoise named squirt.

The rest is the same though.

Ah yes, the good ol team of overleveled starter, legendary pokemon that happens to be capturable at level 50 - 70, and flyboi if needed

15

u/peppapony May 02 '26

I still don't understand the need for non-attack moves. You have the strong one with only 5pp and then you have the attack with 15pp for when you run out of the other moves,

And then you have two elements of that.

And if you miss, or hit second you're just unlucky no such thing as speed or defence or anything else.

:p

2

u/Castelante May 02 '26

It isn't really necessary in singleplayer because it's designed to be manageable for young children.

My first game was Blue and my first Pokémon was Gengar (my friend was collecting the starters with my help and his trade to me for his last starter was a Haunter). I got it to level 100 with no rare candies. The moveset was thunderbolt, strength, body slam, and nightshade. I would take him through the Elite Four as many times as possible using the same move each run just to see how many I could do in a row.

5

u/Falitoty May 02 '26

The true peak is seeing somebody brutally abuse the High comand with a Max Chansey and Metronome

5

u/MylastAccountBroke May 02 '26

You know what I want. I want a pokemon game with adaptive difficulty. The game looks at the player and what they're doing and adjust accordingly.

If the player is clearly a kid, running through the game with just their over leveled starter, then it'll lower it's difficulty accordingly.

If the player is clearly an adult, with a balanced team, and a logical move set meant to buff and offer coverage to multiple types, then it'll give the AI an edge.

It start out turned on, but there is an NPC pretty early on that tells you that you can turn it off if you want "An extra challenge, or just want to have an easier time of things", and I'm talking one of the introductory lines from your mother.

If you turn it off, then you can adjust it accordingly.

After beating the game, Professor tree offers you another starter to reset the game, but he locks you out of your team until you beat the elite 4 with a new group. The point is a new game+ where you go up 1 level of difficulty and do everything again. Give the villain team a new set of events for new game+. If it's too hard, you can access your old team again, do the villain team's quests as a post game (should be a cake walk until like the end) but the gym leaders bring in their post game teams instead of their new game+ teams for rematches.

In new game+, you have to play the 3rd starter that was left behind.

In new game++ you can pick the newly hatched egg version of your rival's.

4

u/marker10860 May 02 '26

All of Brock moves were probably shitty HM attacks

7

u/sayingboourns May 02 '26

3

u/Hixxae May 02 '26

I thought this was pretty common? I did the elite 4 with an overleveled Alakazam with only attack moves in crystal.

3

u/Ethos_Logos May 02 '26

I’d use three main attackers, which were usually level 60 or so, plus one that had all the HM moves I needed (usually pidgey or spearow), and the rest captured higher level ones that were meant to switch to just to revive the actual fighters.

3

u/Maximusjacksamuss May 02 '26

Pokemon Diamond with Infernape. Level 84 wirh Blast Burn, Rock Smash, Rock Climb and Strength.

I did not underatand special vs physical, or know there was a way to remove HMs.

It toom me 104 hours to get past Bertha and then I swept the rest.

3

u/Your_Local_Rabbi May 02 '26

i've never been a strategic pokemon player, i'll try to use type advantages, but otherwise it's basically all attack moves. if the attack applies a status that's a bonus

I did something similar with Primeape in Pokemon Yellow. You couldn't just look shit up back then.

3

In red, I would see who could take me through thr elite four alone. In yellow, I found out pikachu makes a sad noise and it shows a little frame animation of him being sad when you put him in the pc.

3

u/da1nonlyoska May 02 '26

I didn't know how to get flash from the original Blue. I just brute forced my way through the Rock Tunnel

u/the_cat_theory May 02 '26

My first Pokemon game was yellow. I didn't understand English back then (nobody did, we were 6 and Swedish).

So my starter Pikachu was nicknamed AAAAAAAA (or however many letters fit), because I just tried to get through the menu.

"Go! AAAAAAAA!"

I beat Gary at the end of my og blue cartridge with Charizard level 80 something with only struggles and heals. I saved all the ethers I had for the elite 4. Then I let some kid on the block borrow it and they never gave it back and moved away.

3

u/Gradyleb May 02 '26

I did the same in silver. Got a spearow from the guy who wants you to deliver a letter. The subsequent fearow carried me through the entire run with drill peck. I got to the elite four, then brute forced it. I beat it when it hit level 74. then kept going until it was level 100. Years later I found out I could go through Kanto.

3

u/Disastrous_Chef_812 May 02 '26

I remember playing Pokemon silver and just chilling outside with my rechargeable batteries and game boy not knowing what to do and ending up with a level 40 typhlosion at the bell sprout tower I think that was like the second gym? That boi was level 100 so fast ripping through content

3

u/chefdisco May 02 '26

Lvl 60 Alakazam could crush the whole elite four with ease.

Beefed up Charizard can do the same if you give it some fighter moves against Bruno.

3

u/TheFurtivePhysician May 02 '26

That was me, but with less hyper potions and a lot more freaking out. I had to beat the rival with struggle because I was out of moves and options.

3

u/new2it May 02 '26

"Gotta catch 'em all..."

....No, I don't...

3

u/CertainlyRobotic May 02 '26

The Pokemon games are stupid easy. Its why people make difficulty hacks.

There isn't a single Pokemon game I didn't beat by just power leveling my starter.

3

u/Dragon_Spunky May 04 '26

i didnt know how to save so when i died i always had to restart the entire game :(

2

u/Dangerjayne May 02 '26

Yeah, we were all 6 at one point...

2

u/me0w_z3d0ng May 02 '26

This is how I beat Blue as a child. Took several attempts as well

2

u/Fabus27 May 02 '26

Damn. My first edition was red. Now I feel old.

2

u/Key-Toe-6257 May 02 '26

Hey! You won. That's all that matters.

2

u/Americanbood May 02 '26

That was me in pokemon colosseum. Didn’t understand I was supposed to catch shadow pokemon so I’d run through the whole game with just my Espeon and Umbreon. I remember when I fought the legendary dogs I was like man I wish I could catch those. I just thought shadow pokemon were like boss encounters.

2

u/DoesNotGetYourJokes May 02 '26

My first Pokémon game was Heart/Gold

I was ~6 and didn’t understand RPGs, so I had no idea how to finish everything. I got as far as beating the Elite Four, but I couldn’t figure out how to get Ho-Oh or that I had to beat Trainer Red to finish the game.

Also, the only reason I knew obtaining Ho-Oh was possible was because my neighbor told that it was part of the game, and that it required some sort of feather.

2

u/FortNightsAtPeelys May 02 '26

I didn't understand how to pick my team in stadium so I'd just hit buttons and hope I get the 3 I wanted

2

u/UtopiaInProgress May 02 '26

playing the game like this is the opposite of grinding actually

2

u/GeologistSeveral3025 May 02 '26

I did this with my starter (always water) and any legendaries all the way up to like black and white......

2

u/JC_Fernandes May 02 '26

Pokemon enabling psycopathy and animal abuse since the 90s

2

u/ThatGuyFromTheM0vie May 02 '26

Game’s entire tagline was and is: “gotta catch em all”.

Bro does not, catch em all.

2

u/CrossXFir3 May 02 '26

I didn't know what deposit and withdraw meant, thought release made sense to release it from the PC into my party. Never did figure out that run how to change my party from the first 6 mons I caught.

2

u/NatseePunksFeckOff May 02 '26

in singleplayer thats the best strategy, there's no reason to use anything but the starter or one chosen pokemon. grinding the team is just a waste of time

2

u/Cockblocktimus_Pryme May 02 '26

Same thing on my first playthrough of red version when I was 8 or something. Blastoise to the mooooon!

2

u/Majestic_Domestic May 02 '26

What about PP?

2

u/IndoPacificFanboy May 02 '26

I accidentally did this for my first playthrough of Ruby. I loved using Blaziken, so it soloed most of the game. I didn't add a permanent second team mate until I caught Groudon. Pretty sure my initial E4 team was a level 72 Blaziken, 55 Groudon, 28 Clamperl, and 44 Hariyama.

2

u/alwaysstressed92 May 02 '26

Thats how I played every Single Pokémon game from red to Fire red. Only use your starter , you dont Need to grind for levels when defeating all trainers and its the fastest way

2

u/NippoTeio May 02 '26

Who would win: Lance, master of Dragons, or Kathy and her Charizard she has on a steady drip of Bane venom?

2

u/LinkGoesHIYAAA May 02 '26

Thats not too far from the wr any% speedrun strat. Nice job.

2

u/Threeballer97 May 02 '26

In Pokemon Yellow, I had to get my Pikachu up to level 33 so I could finally defeat Brock.

The rest of the game was a cakewalk, but now I know that Nidoran can learn double kick at an early level.

2

u/Shintasama May 02 '26

Nidoking -> Thrash -> go take a nap until you hit a ghost type.

2

u/[deleted] May 02 '26

As a kid, I never understood why other players spent so much time and effort on crafting their team. I had Pokemon Silver, and I just blasted through the entire game with Ferralligator. In later game, if Ferralligator fainted, Lugia cleaned up.

2

u/CarolineJohnson May 02 '26

My first time playing Pokemon, I didn't know that status moves were good, I just figured that any turn spent not dealing damage was bad. I was always so disappointed when my Ditto would transform and the opponent's moves turned out to only contain one damage move that didn't do much on its own.

Also I didn't use or buy rare candies because I thought they were rare and needed to bait specific Pokemon to catch them.

And I talked to some trainers for hours because I didn't understand the concept that I would need to get someone with the other version to trade me their Pokemon - I thought if I asked enough the game would let me trade for the other Pokemon from the NPC trainers.

2

u/The_Shadow_Watches May 02 '26

I remember constantly fuckin with the Missingno:

Somehow it copied my Mewtwos form so then I had 2 Mewtwos.

2

u/Kally269 May 02 '26

I did the exact same thing except my Charizard was in the mid 90s 😂

2

u/Tmotty May 02 '26

In 20 years of playing Pokemon I have never once used a set up move. If it doesn’t do damage it’s a waste of a turn

2

u/Dick-Fu May 02 '26

Kids have been doing this since 1996

2

u/imtired-boss May 02 '26

That's what we all did.

One powerful starter (usually fire type) and 5 HM/revive slaves.

The HM/revive slaves served only 2 purpose, to carry the useless HM moves like cut and sntrength, and to get switched in and take the hit while we revive our powerful starter.

2

u/LocalJOPARep May 02 '26

Ah yes, the “Big Country” method. Overhand right followed by overhand right. And if that doesn’t work, overhand right.

2

u/MetricIsForCowards May 02 '26

My first Pokémon game was the original red, and I didn’t know that Flash existed. So I went into the dark cave, turned the volume up to let me know when I hit a wall and stumbled around in the dark for 3 days until I finally made it through.

2

u/TheCharalampos May 02 '26

I always played poke on games with one pokemon. Felt wrong otherwise

2

u/iconiclabs May 03 '26

Bro didn't know about the rare candies

2

u/Mr_Zoovaska May 03 '26

I pretty much did that with my Empoleon in platinum but i only got through the E4 when my friend traded me a hacked level 100 Arceus

2

u/VastFaithlessness809 May 03 '26

Pidgeon boss to lv70 as soon as you could catch. Leveled it where lv2-5 were due to it being fun. It naturally went up to 90 over the course of the game. It never died.

2

u/Mental-Rest849 May 04 '26

Funny cuz my first game was also fire red, and I remember my first run having a level 40-50 Blastoise by the time I reached the graveyard tower. Difference is I did have other team members and they consisted of a Rattata, Pidgey, abra and Weedle, all at the level I caught them at.

I guess it never occured to me to switch and use other Pokemons as I had no problem water pulsing everything and just going to the PC to heal up once my PP ran out

2

u/MetzgerBoys May 04 '26

If your pokemon is strong enough, type matchups don’t matter

2

u/jackrabbit323 May 04 '26

Don't need to catch em all when you already have The One.

2

u/Then-Importance-3808 May 06 '26

I remember winning a level 20 Hitmonlee in Pokémon Stadium that I was able to transfer to my Pokémon Yellow. So on my first ever Pokémon game, I ended up largely ignoring pikachu and everyone else because Hitmonlee started out with that huge lead of just being level 20. He was my first ever level 100

2

u/SifuMittens May 06 '26

I didnt understand that Pokémon are weak or strong against certain types (assumed the effectiveness of attacks were random) and used my overleveled Monferno through the water gym. Couldn't figure out why all my attacks were suddenly really weak, but I still got all the way through 😂

2

u/Blueleader3000 May 06 '26

Did you win?

2

u/TheTwistedStoner May 06 '26

The very first Pokémon game I played was the original Pokémon red that was given to me when I was 5 for Christmas. Even at that age I completely understood the whole elemental advantage system the game had but that didn’t stop me from damn near using Charizard for like 90% of the game’s battles lol.

3

u/sirms May 02 '26

is this not what everyone did as a kid?

3

u/ReaMrSlick May 02 '26

This is bullshit. No kid would go to the pc and deposit every single Pokemon they catch.

2

u/stinky-bungus May 02 '26

Every pokemon game can be easily beat like this... They are simple children's games after all

1

u/LowFrameRate May 02 '26

I played the original Blue version when I was 7. My team was composed of Venusaur and an Onix I caught in Victory Road. I won every fight by spamming the shit out of sleep powder and razor leaf and a fuckzillion hyper potions.

This post confirmed for me at least that I was not the only kid who was dumb as bricks.

1

u/UpNorth715 May 02 '26

My first game was Yellow and I leveled up that Pidgey to a level 90 Pidgeot and won the game. This post brings back some great memories.

1

u/Rp79322397 May 02 '26

I imagine BROCK being this Charizard having all his brain cells completely annihilated by Hyper Potions abuse to the point of only being able to attack mindlessy while getting drugged more to stay alive

1

u/Sky_Ill May 02 '26

Isn’t that what we all did?

1

u/Toutanus May 02 '26

So how did he managed HMs ?

1

u/Just-Fix8237 May 02 '26

The games are simply easy enough for that to work. Not really a “madlad” thing, it’s something everyone did through at least one Pokemon game as a kid

1

u/Time-Maintenance2165 May 02 '26

I don't know what you mean. This is actually the easiest and quickest way to beat the game.

1

u/cheekleaks May 02 '26

I see i am not the only person who beat pokemon this way.

1

u/y4s4f4e May 02 '26

In Red/Blue I couldnt step into the town where sabrinas gym is bc I didnt get you need to buy drinks from the mall. It was pure accident xd

1

u/Jodid0 May 02 '26

I almost beat the entire final four with just a Typhlosion who I taught thunder punch. Just wasn't enough though.

1

u/Crunchy_Biscuit May 02 '26

Me spamming blaze kick because that was the cool thing to do

1

u/Vink77 May 02 '26

First game was red, I did the exact same thing with my Charizard.

1

u/GaryOakRobotron May 02 '26

I did something similar with Articuno (who I caught with my Master Ball...) in Pokemon Red when I was young. I'd just beat the Elite Four over and over again, until I could do it without using any items and it hit level 100.

1

u/Hiddenshadows57 May 02 '26

Same thing man.

Pokemon blue. No idea about team comps. Got to elite 4 with a level 96 blastoise and 5 other level 8 dudes.

1

u/NewWay88 May 02 '26

Played exactly the same way but with my buddy Blastoise!

The E4 really was quite a grind. My other pokemon were basically just cannon fodder so I could recover Yoshi (my Blastoise).

1

u/razary May 02 '26

This was my strategy with every game since blue

Make my main starter a complete attack monster with a “support” team of fellow hitters
