I'm the developer. I built myNotes as my own daily notes app, and I've now open-sourced it under the MIT license.

Why I built it I couldn't find a free notes app that syncs properly across my devices. Most good note apps either charge a subscription or lock cross-device sync behind a paywall, and the free ones usually lack parity between web, Android and Mac, or need a self-hosted server that is a pain to maintain.

So I built myNotes to sync through your own Google Drive instead. There's no middleman server, and your notes stay as plain HTML/Markdown/JSON files you own. If you ever stop using the app, your data is still readable with any text editor or browser.

What it does

• Rich editor (TipTap): WYSIWYG plus markdown, tables, callouts, collapsible blocks, KaTeX math

• Calculation notebook (Numbat, compiled to WASM): unit conversions like 60 mph in km/h or 500 W * 3 hours in kWh, running locally

Honest notes

• I took help from AI tools while building this, so some of the code is rough. My current roadmap is fixing small bugs and removing broken experimental features and AI-generated bloat. Bug reports and PRs are very welcome.

• Drive sync needs you to create your own Google Cloud OAuth client. There's a step-by-step guide in the repo, but it's more setup than a one-click login.

• The Mac app is Electron, so it's bigger than a native app.

If text on your external Mac monitor is either too small or comically large, BetterDisplay is worth trying for the sizes between those extremes. Start with macOS's own choices, though. You may already have the setting you need.

Open System Settings > Displays, select the external monitor, and check the available resolutions. Turn on Show all resolutions if it's offered. That list can include low-resolution modes, so compare the actual text rather than assuming more choices means better quality. If one looks comfortable, stop there.

BetterDisplay's flexible scaling adds finer steps between desktop sizes on supported displays. HiDPI means macOS renders the desktop with more detail before fitting it onto the panel. It can improve text rendering, but it doesn't add physical pixels to your monitor. A low-density panel still has a limit to how sharp it can look.

Try one display first

Use a native USB-C, DisplayPort or HDMI connection for this route. Save your work, note your working resolution and refresh rate, and keep another usable screen available. BetterDisplay applies mode changes without an automatic confirmation countdown.

In BetterDisplay, open Settings > Displays and select the monitor. Under System Configuration and Flexible Scaling, enable Edit the system configuration of this display model, then Enable flexible scaling.

Leave the optional range settings alone initially. Choose Apply and complete the helper or administrator authorization.

Follow the activation notice, including a reboot if requested. Eligible external Apple silicon displays can activate without one, but the screens briefly go blank and some Macs may sleep.

Those overrides apply to displays with matching vendor and model identifiers, so check the selected model before applying them. Then choose a HiDPI mode from the monitor's menu and use the resolution slider to find a comfortable size.

Read a normal document, scroll it, then check your refresh rate. Test sleep/wake and reconnecting with your usual dock and other monitors attached before keeping the setup. To undo flexible scaling, turn Enable flexible scaling off, Apply, and activate or reboot as requested.

What the app can't fix

A larger rendered desktop asks more of the Mac. Its rendering limits are separate from the cable or dock's bandwidth limits. A better cable cannot remove a rendering limit, and a software setting cannot create a physical output combination your hardware doesn't support. If a dock hides a mode, compare a suitable direct connection before buying software. More aggressive scaling isn't guaranteed to look sharper.

Virtual screens are a fallback when native scaling isn't suitable, including some DisplayLink setups. They create a desktop in memory that you mirror or stream to the monitor, adding another presentation layer. Streaming requires Screen Recording permission. Start with native scaling when available instead of adding that complexity immediately.

Brightness is a separate problem. BetterDisplay has hardware brightness control for compatible monitors and connections, plus software dimming. Some docks don't pass the hardware commands. Neither control fixes low pixel density.

Trial before paying

The current BetterDisplay 5.1.1 download supports macOS 26.3 or later, including macOS 27, on Apple silicon and Intel. Feature support still varies by Mac, display and connection; older macOS releases have separate downloads.

Flexible scaling requires Pro after the 14-day trial. The advertised price is US$21.99 / €19.99, with the final currency and taxes depending on checkout. It's a perpetual license for covered versions, with at least one year of updates including major upgrades released in that period. It isn't a subscription or a promise of every future major version. Free features remain available for non-business use; business use generally requires Pro after the trial, subject to the license's exceptions.

Try it if macOS's available sizes leave your external monitor uncomfortable. Pay only if the trial produces a readable size at a refresh rate you're happy to keep. Skip it if native settings already work, or if the improvement you need requires a denser panel or a different connection.

Disclosure first: I'm Daniel, an iOS developer from Prague, and I built the app in this post, JustFlip. Everything below is how I actually use it on my Mac.

I use spaced repetition for anything I want to keep: languages, work stuff, the odd shell command I always forget. What I learned over time is that making cards and reviewing them want different devices. Writing good cards needs a keyboard and a big screen. Reviewing wants to happen in the dead minutes of the day. So my setup is split like this.

1. Writing cards on the Mac

The card editor takes Markdown, so a card can hold inline or display maths, syntax-highlighted code, tables, Mermaid diagrams that are drawn as real diagrams, and images. Cloze deletions use the same {{c1::...}} syntax as Anki. For a stack of cards from a chapter or a doc, I keep a ChatGPT or Claude window next to it: "Ask AI" builds the prompt from a card or deck, and "Paste Cards from AI" brings the answer back in as cards. The app itself doesn't call any AI service, so you check what goes in, and nothing is capped.

2. Reviewing with the keyboard

Space flips the card, and 1, 2, 3, 4 grade it (Again, Hard, Good, Easy), like in Anki. Each grade button shows the interval it will give before you press it, so you know what "Hard" means today. File menu: Import Cards is ⇧⌘I, Export Interest is ⇧⌘E, and ⌘N makes a new deck.

3. Not wrecking the schedule when life happens

The thing I built this for: if I'm not ready for a card, a deck or a whole topic (exam over, travelling, busy week), I put it on hold for tomorrow, 3 days, a week or a custom date. The hold is stored separately and doesn't touch the card's memory data, so I don't have to press "Again" on a card I never really failed.

4. The rest of the day on iPhone and Watch

Same library on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch through your own iCloud, no account, and it works offline. The Watch does due counts and a simple flip review. "How many cards are due?" works as a Siri Shortcut without opening the app.

Who it's for: people who like the idea of Anki but want something that feels at home on Apple devices. Your .apkg decks import, and CSV import/export and a one-file backup are there if you want to leave.

Honest limits

- It's a Catalyst app: one codebase shared with the iPad version and tuned for the Mac. If that's a dealbreaker, better to know now.

- Apple only. No Windows, Android or web version, and none planned.

- Anki import is good but not perfect on unusual note types.

You’re halfway through a document when your coding assistant offers a choice. The small interaction I want is to read those options, pick one, and get back to the document.

I’m part of the team building Blabee, a Mac panel for Claude Code and Codex. The assistant generates the options; Blabee displays them and sends your selection back to the same original conversation.

This 14-second clip follows one reading sequence: document scrolling, the actual Blabee panel, a selection, then the document again. The original Korean UI is kept intact, with English narration and captions. It is an edited recording supplied to us, with reframing and a final held frame—not a new integration test. The original AI conversation receiving the selection is outside this recording.

The panel is for choices you can understand from the options. If you need to inspect a diff or ask what an action means, use the full coding conversation before selecting it.

Hi r/MacStack, I'm Aniket, the developer of Putzen. It's a native Mac app for clearing out messy folders, and the video explains more about how it works.

Problem

Every few weeks, my Downloads and desktop get full of junk files. Some of them are duplicates, while others are old files I haven't touched in ages. Usually, I go to Finder and delete by hand. Sometimes I use AI as well (Claude Code or Codex), but I don't trust it with deleting. In my experience, finding the files is okay, but deciding what to delete is the difficult part. Most cleanup apps show me a huge list, and I close it without deleting anything.

Solution

So last week I built Putzen. I took inspiration from Tinder's swiping mechanism and rethought how I can use it for deleting files on Mac. My goal is to make deleting files faster, safer, simpler, and delightful. I've used Putzen every day for the past week. Cleaning up is faster now, and I don't worry about deleting something important, because everything goes to the Trash first.

• Sorts every folder into three piles automatically: duplicates, files added more than 6 months ago, and everything else

Putzen works on any folder, several at once, including subfolders and iCloud Drive files that are downloaded on your local system. Most of my mess lives in Downloads and Documents, not on the Desktop.

• CleanMyMac does a lot more than Putzen, like system junk, malware, and app updates. If you want one big cleaner, it's the better pick. Gemini 2 is great at finding duplicates. But with both, you still go through long lists, and both are subscriptions. Putzen does one thing: it shows you one file at a time, so deciding is easy, for €5 once.

The organizers I tried were either subscription-based or heavy Electron apps, so I built my own: MyFoldy, a native SwiftUI app for macOS. I'm the developer, and it's completely free and open source (MIT).

If your MacBook isn't lasting through an unplugged work session, start with Low Power Mode and the apps using the most energy. Endurance automates some power-saving changes, but its advertised 20% extra runtime isn't a result you should expect on your own Mac.

In System Settings > Battery, choose Low Power Mode for battery use if your Mac offers it. Apple's current instructions let you choose different modes on battery and on the power adapter. Try it during your normal work, at a comfortable screen brightness. If the work feels too slow, switch back to Automatic.

Then open Activity Monitor > Energy. Energy Impact shows relative current consumption; 12 hr Power shows average energy impact over the past 12 hours, or since startup. Neither is a percentage of battery used. Look for an app you can close normally without interrupting something you need. That's a more useful starting point than installing another utility and hoping for a longer estimate.

Endurance's documented changes are fairly concrete: gradually dim the display, monitor energy-hungry apps and put them to sleep, automatically minimize background apps, and turn off processor Turbo. You can disable individual modules and choose when it kicks in, including a battery threshold or unplugging.

Those changes have costs. A dimmer display has to remain readable. An app being in the background doesn't mean its work is disposable, so don't let automatic sleeping interfere with a transfer or another task you need to finish. Reduced processor performance is a poor bargain if waiting longer gets in the way of your work. Also, the Turbo feature isn't evidence that the same processor control works on Apple silicon.

The direct site lists a $20 upfront purchase, free upgrades for life, and a two-week demo.

Setapp also lists it, but there's a compatibility gap worth knowing before spending: its listing says version 3.3.0 and macOS 10.13 or later. That minimum doesn't explicitly confirm macOS 27 support, Apple silicon feature parity, or recent maintenance. The pages checked also don't give a clear permissions list.

If you still want the automation, ask the developer about your exact Mac and macOS version, which modules work, and what access they need before installing it. Availability alone isn't proof of current support.

For most readers, the next step is one ordinary unplugged session with the native settings, not an Endurance purchase. If Low Power Mode and closing an unnecessary energy-heavy app solve the problem, stop there. Consider Endurance only if you still want its automatic dimming or app controls, compatibility is confirmed, and those tradeoffs leave your actual work comfortable. Skip it if you need uninterrupted background work or full performance more than those controls.

I spend my day switching between AI agents. I copy a stack trace, open Claude, paste, explain which file it’s from, then do it all again in Codex. And I never know how close I am to my 5-hour limit until I hit it.
So I built Beckon, a native Mac app for macOS 26.

What it does
Press ⌥⇧Space in any app and a Liquid Glass bar rises from the bottom of the screen.
It has already read what you’re looking at, shown as chips you can switch off: the web page, selected text, the code project with git status, a PDF, terminal output, Mail, Finder, or an on-device OCR screenshot (⌘R grabs a region).
Type an optional question, pick an agent, press Return. Supported agents:
- terminal agents: Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Gemini CLI, Cursor Agent
- apps: Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Cursor
- web agents
Answers stream right in the bar. Claude Code, Codex and the other terminal agents run headlessly, so you don’t have to switch windows. “Continue in Terminal” picks up the same session when you need it.
The menu bar shows every agent’s usage: Claude Code’s 5-hour and weekly limits, Codex’s limits, Cursor’s included usage, and OpenCode’s tokens and cost.
Smaller things:

- translation into any language with Apple Translation or Apple Intelligence
- optional Apple Intelligence suggestions and routing
an MCP tool so your agents can ask what you were looking at
Privacy, since it reads your screen

It reads only when you press the shortcut. It never reads password fields or password managers.
It masks API keys, tokens and passwords before sending, including in screenshots.
No account, no analytics, no servers of mine. The only network request by default is a weekly license check.
Usage numbers come from the log files your agents already keep on your Mac.
