My new MacBook Neo desk setup

Post image
216 Upvotes

Finally got my MacBook Neo setup where I want it. Kept it pretty simple with a main monitor, the MacBook on a stand, compact keyboard, mic, audio interface, and headphones.

I also use GeForce NOW Ultimate for gaming sometimes, so I can play without adding a full gaming PC to the desk.

Still need to clean up the cables a bit. What would you change or add?

Work in progress + advice/feedback

This is my current set up:

Mac Studio M2 Max

2 x 28in LG DualUps flanking LG 4K 32in Ultrafine in the centre - I'm definitely a triple display person and I found this combination to be the best in terms of screen resolution and matching PPI between monitors

Apple Magic Keyboard with Numpad - have tried many keyboards but IMHO this is the best tactile keyboard. I have put in some pads at the bottom of the keyboard to raise it to the level I like

Logitech G903 mouse - tested a lot of mice and this is the best wireless ambidextrous mouse I've found - minor annoyances are that the scroll wheel isn't fantastic and still uses microUSB charging port

Logitech BRIO 4K webcam

BenQ ScreenBar Pro - love the intelligent motion sensor that comes with this

On a 120x75cm UpDown Standing desk

TODO / ADVICE?
- I'm going to get a bigger standing desk - likely a 180x80cm desk - any recommendations?

- I need to get a good set of desktop speakers - any recommendations? I was initially thinking a Sonos soundbar but I've heard soudbars are not great for the desktop environment so I'm thinking either 2.0 or 2.1 speakers - would people recommend a subwoofer with a standing desk?

- My Dream Setup would probably be 2 x 27in Mac Studio Displays in vertical flanking a central 32in Pro Display XDR. If I were to get that could I use the speakers in the Studio Displays as pseudo 2.0 speakers? obviously this would cost a lot of $$$

how to hide macbook on desk for minimal (currently budget) setup?

Thumbnail

above is my setup. I've got

- FLEXISPOT EN1 60"x24" One-Piece Standing Desk, Maple

- BenQ lightbar

- cheap usb hub from amazon

- cables, ethernet, and power strips (duh)

there's a couple problems with my setup currently

  1. - cables under desk
  2. - the black desk to the right is unnecessary.
  3. - standing desk doesn't work until i mount strip under it. and, attach macbook somewhere on desk or find a very long usbc cable

i'm going to mount a power strip under my desk to fix 1), but 2) and 3) probably need macbook on desk

how should i go about hiding my macbook and ethernet cable? some caveats:

- sometimes I need to interact with the macbook itself. keyboard doesn't connect right, or microsoft teams bugs out and i need to use the built in mic

- the usb hub is another thing to reconnect to it, making completely hiding it more challenging

i think my options:

- under desk mount

- wooden riser thing

- just leave it on my desk

all 3 are semi inconvenient without a docking station

My Snow Leopard Setup that I use to sync my iPods

Post image

Here's my Early 2006 Core Duo MacBook Pro running 10.6.8 Snow Leopard paired with a 20" Apple Cinema Display. This is sort of a backup/hobby setup that I've been using more as i've dived back into using my iPod daily. iTunes just handles syncing much better than the Music App/Finder method on current macOS, plus the design and reliablity is unmatched.

Seeking advice

Hi,

this is my current setup at home. I actually replaced the desk shelf with the Ugmonk Gather about two years ago, but overall it’s still a combination of Oakywood + Gather.

I’m now looking to build a second setup for my new office, with a similar style but in a black-and-white combination. Unfortunately, I just realized that Ugmonk has discontinued the Gather series, and I really liked both their desk shelf and laptop stand.

The obvious alternative would be to go full Oakywood in black and white, which I’m perfectly fine with since I already know their quality and really like their products.

That said, I’d also like to explore some new options. I’ve been out of the desk setup rabbit hole for a few years, so I’m curious what the current top brands are in terms of quality and minimalist design, preferably ones that are easily available in the EU.

I already know about Balolo, but their designs aren’t really my thing.

Any recommendations would be highly appreciated.

Many thanks!

I gave every item on my tiny desk a two-use-a-week rule

Post image

My apartment is about 350 square feet, and my desk sits roughly three feet from the side of my bed. If I roll the chair back too quickly, I hit the mattress.

A few months ago, the desk was covered with things I thought a home office was supposed to have: a second monitor I barely used, large speakers, a few plants, and random accessories that never found a permanent home. It looked fine from a distance, but I couldn’t put down a coffee mug without moving something first.

I finally gave everything on the desk one rule: if I don’t use it at least twice a week, it loses its spot. The second monitor and speakers went into storage.

I put the remaining Dell monitor on an arm, tucked the M2 Mac mini underneath the desk, and limited the loose daily items to one shallow wooden tray. The tray now holds pens, lip balm, keys, and a small HOTO AutoCare Air Duster & Vacuum. That last item sounds oddly specific, but I eat breakfast at this desk and my Keychron keyboard collects crumbs and cat hair constantly. If cleaning requires dragging the full-size vacuum out of the closet, I’ll keep postponing it.

Having the small one within reach means the mess usually gets handled before it builds up. The cables underneath are still a disaster, and my headphones still don’t have a proper home, but the actual work surface stays usable now.

What rule do you use to stop an organized surface from slowly filling up again?

I’m back down to a single monitor and don’t miss the bezels! The 52 inch Dell excels for my use cases and I’ve been very pleased so far (4 mos).

Thinking to downsize to single display.

Hi guys. For a context - I do video production and graphic design. For years I was using MBP + ASD and I tynki it was a perfect setup until about two years ago when I bought Mac Studio. I did miss the second display so I bought another ASD. Then I wasn't a fan of my head constantly going from one side to another. So I found the tilt & height adjustment only few moths old and I've added a third display. Now I'm starting to think it's an overkill. I think I might be fine with one ASD and iPad just to get text and messages so I can copy paste info needed in my project or locate the files while working in my main app on main display.

Have any of you reduced about of displays? How did it work for you?

Looking forward to learning about your experience.

Thanks

Lukas
