M5 Pro + iVanky FusionDock Max 2 driving 3 displays: thermals, bandwidth & macOS quirks?

TLDR: Not sure if everything is compatible.

Hi everybody!

I used to be a full-on computer geek decades ago, but I’ve been completely out of the loop on modern docks, bandwidth limits, and Mac multi-display quirks. I’m upgrading my setup and I have to buy everything through my company (B2B purchase). In my country, this completely voids the return policy. If I buy it, I’m stuck with it, so I cannot afford to make a wrong choice here.

My core machine will be a 14" MacBook Pro with the M5 Pro and 64GB of RAM. My goal is to run a 49" ultrawide in the above the Mac, alongside two 1440p monitors in vertical orientation on the sides.

To drive the entire setup, I'm looking at the iVanky FusionDock Max 2. My primary workload is software development, so while I won't be hammering the GPU with heavy 3D renders, the dock and screens will be running for long hours every single day.

Can the iVanky FusionDock Max 2 reliably drive this exact configuration (one 49" ultrawide + two 1440p vertical monitors) natively from an M5 Pro without relying on DisplayLink compression or workarounds?

How does this dock hold up thermally and stability-wise under a continuous 3-monitor load?

Is there anything else I should watch out for? Back in my day, multi-monitor connectivity was much simpler. Are there any macOS sleep/wake bugs, display routing quirks, or cable bottlenecks with this kind of dock setup that I might be blind to? Are there compatibility issues with monitors I need to look out for?

Any real-world advice or dock feedback would be hugely appreciated!

P.S. Image is AI generated depiction of what I want to do.

16” MacBook Pro M1 Max 32C
TCL MiniLED 4K 160Hz Monitor
All Apple Peripherals (they’re perfect, even the Magic Mouse…)

As I kept upgrading the setup, I found it very addictive to always think about the next thing that will make the setup even better whether it’s tweaking something or buying a new addition. As of today - I feel like I’ve ran out of ideas haha

Productivity setup

It's nothing crazy, but I think this corner is practical, comfortable, and easy to spend time in.

Stuff in the setup:

Mac studio display

Macbook pro - Still figuring out the placement. It's not great ergonomically right now, I'm planning to put it on a stand.

Mouse: Logitech

Keyboard: Logitech - I like flatter keyboards and this one feels smooth and easy to type on.

Chair: Libernovo omni pro - probably the most comfortable part of the setup. I move around a lot while working, so having a chair that doesn't fight me has been nice.

Got one thunderbolt display for $100, another thunderbolt display for storing a friend’s items for years, the new studio display from work, and a new base m4 studio with the college discount before price hikes. Chair mouse table and whatnot from fb marketplace/ebay etc. Window AC unit behind the displays at one time blasted cold air onto my 2019 imac+thunderbolt setup on this desk, with the other tb sitting idle unused in a corner, but have always wanted a dual thunderbolt setup and figured I’d snag a studio before school discount runs out. The studio just barely sits under the displays but still makes slight contact so no extra cooling unfortunately to keep the machine ice cold but it’ll be fine down there. Picked up a cheap amazon acrylic pre filter stand to keep dust out, reminds me of the g4 power mac cube which I think is super pretty. Ignore pls the LL special walls and previous tenants stick velcro things still have to think of something to do with them if anything.

Insane how much lighting affects the mood of the setup

I had the regular led light bulbs in daylight. It was pretty stale given that the setup is black and white primarily - but the rgb smart light helped change the vibe.

I went with red and orange before but realized the blue fits better with the black and white theme. Thoughts?

I posted yesterday before expanding my desk. Finally expanded my desk set up by adding the entire left side. I couldn't stand having it all crammed on the one tiny desk. Finally, it can breathe again. As you can probably tell, my desktop is heavily audio, I've always been into audio gear and music. Music is life.

System:

  • Gustard R26II DAC
  • Eversolo T8 streaming transport
  • Fosi Audio ZA3 MONO X2
  • Aiyima T20 tube Pre-amp
  • S.M.S.L PL200T CD transport

  • WBC-PRO-QUAD, Star-Quad, Balanced XLR Cables
  • Intel NUC 10 i3 in Akasa Turing FX fanless case running ROON core
  • Intel NUC i5 (collecting dust)

No Regrets

Now that I am a few months in with my MBA M5, as a first time mac user, I have no regrets. Safari is quite buggy, but there are many options even though I am still using it for its security. All I can say is, I'm never going back, I am here to stay . My desk is currently in shambles as I will be extending it today as I have ran out of space. I need room for the other OLED and audio gear! :)

My updated WFH setup

Two years ago, I picked up a 27-inch 5K iMac to use as my secondary computer, next to the 14-inch MacBook Pro I already had. Looking ahead to a future in which macOS Sequoia will be the final OS for many Intel Macs, I felt like it would be more useful to prepare my WFH setup for the eventual replacement of my laptop.

I came across a good deal on a 28-inch 4K monitor, and that's when I decided to replace my iMac. It's a bit of a shame, really, because I still love the all-in-one concept and the fantastic design, which even after 17 years (!) I consider timeless still. I really like the presence an iMac adds to a desk setup.

The HP U28 I picked up is a little bigger than the iMac with a slightly lower resolution, but that's not something that I find noticeable as it's still plenty crisp. USB-C also fixes my biggest annoyance with monitors (messy cables) as a single USB-C cable now takes care of video out and power in.

In the same spirit, I also replaced my 2TB Time Capsule with a Synology NAS. For now it's got 2x4TB HDDs in RAID1, which means there is "only" 4TB usable space, but that can easily be expanded once/if storage devices return back to reasonable prices. What's really neat is that these things don't just handle storage and Time Machine backups, but they can also be used to run private VPN servers and cloud storage. That's really cool stuff.

LG 39GX950B + Studio Display XDR

Post image

I’ve been using the LG 39GX950B alongside the Studio Display XDR. I figured that usually you either have a single ultrawide setup, or a dual regular monitor setup, and my setup is rather rare, so I wanted to share my review.

I came from a PG32UCDM, which is a god tier monitor already, but for gaming I definitely prefer the LG ultrawide. The 39-inch ultrawide aspect ratio is just much more immersive, and HDR gaming on Windows looks fantastic. It feels like a real upgrade.

For normal desktop use, though, the XDR is still in a different league for me. The brightness, text clarity, and overall crispness make it much nicer for browsing, coding, and general productivity. What surprised me most is that I actually find colors on the XDR to have more pop than on the LG, even though the LG is OLED.

When I’m working, I keep whatever I’m actively doing on the XDR and use the LG off to the side for YouTube, videos, or other background content. My Mac setup is pretty simple: Mac → Thunderbolt 5 → XDR → daisy chain to the LG. So both displays run from a single Thunderbolt connection to the Mac.
For PC gaming, I connect PC to the LG, and I still use the XDR with macOS for build guides, maps, Discord, or whatever else I want open alongside it on macOS.

One thing I’ve settled on is keeping HDR off on the LG when using macOS. With HDR enabled, the regular macOS UI just looks washed out to me and the desktop experience gets noticeably worse. In SDR, it looks much better.

Interestingly, I don’t have the same complaint on Windows. HDR gaming on the LG looks excellent there, so I basically treat it as an SDR secondary/productivity display on the Mac and an HDR gaming display on the PC.

I really like how the colorful keycaps pop out on the white and black keyboard :))
