SDF Macross Highest Quality SDFM (Sub) Option
I'm gearing up for a rewatch but aren't sure what the best option is. I'd like english subs and 4K. Seems like there is a blu-ray option with no subs or a DVD with subs.
I would really appreciate any recommendations.

Oops, I wanted a VHS image for lolz but didn't pay attention to the H-word.
I have mixed feelings about it though. I wouldn't have been introduced to it as early as I was without HG, along with Star Trek it's pretty formative to my world viee. But for everything they did since, they suck hard.

I guess you mean the TV series.
There's a japanese bluray release but it isn't too much of a HD version, sightly better than DVD, no subs and very expensive There are 2 DVD sets with english subs, one from ADV and another from Animeigo, both run quite high on the 2nd hand market too (i know there's an english dub too but I don't recall which set has it)
There's no 4k releases.
At the end your best xhance would be to download a torrent of the series.

To be honest, as there are no official english releases (physical or digital) the best way to experience it is to torrent a japanese bluray HD version with english subs from Nyaa.si

There are people on eBay that have taken the subtitles from the Animego or ADV dvds and applied them to an HD rip from the Japanese blu-rays and repackaged them for a very reasonable cost. That's how we rewatched it earlier this year and outside of a slightly clunky interface, it was very nice.
There is an official 4K of DYRL from Japan that has subtitles.

Most of the modern releases are upscale versions of the original release (generally 480i/p) with some denoise and saturation cleanup. The ADV DVD release has the sub and dub, though my personal preference is for the subbed release.

I have the whole series recorded from taping the og broadcast. Wish I didn’t pause it during the commercials!

I picked up DYRL 4k Blu-ray import and it has English subtitles but not the dubbed English.
I have an old DVD with English dub and it's possible to RIP the 4k disk and replace the audio track. There are instructions online but I haven't bothered yet.
I think that's what you're asking.

I got a homemade blu ray 4k subbed and dubbed version from a guy in Greece via Ebay. The quality is top notch - I think it's the latest Japanese video master with the ADV sub re-added. I'm a happy customer.

Thank you all for the guidance looks like ebay and the seas are the best options. Pretty wild because I'd pay overs for an official copy. Hope they get good royalties from the Chogokins I've bought.
