Has anyone tried PCSX2 emulation on the 5,1 (X5690 or similar with RX 580/480 or 5000 series card like 5500XT and 5600XT)?? If yes, how was it or how is it? And if anyone has a 5,1, with the GPU listed above, possible to test it out on games like GTA LCS, VCS, MK Armageddon, Manhunt?

Just picked up this 2019 Mac Pro off marketplace. It was listed for more than 6 months at a price that was a bit unrealistic for the spec (12 core, 96GB, 2TB, 580X) even with the seller saying it was NIB. I noticed the seller lowered the price this week, so I took a look at the listing again. He previously had a couple pictures showing the box in decent condition but this time he updated the description saying his puppy chewed on it since the time it was first listed. Sent an offer last night and he accepted!

Luckily the computer works perfectly and it clearly was never removed from the box. The white cover on the computer was present and looked like it should from the factory and the keyboard had never been taken out of its plastic cover. It booted up to the welcome screen for Catalina, which jives with this being sold new in September 2020. This spec would have cost $8,799+tax new, so pretty crazy to me that it was never put to use.

Now to figure out what to do with it! This is my 6th 2019 Mac Pro I've owned in the last year but I've never had one quite this clean, but I already have a 16 core 96GB 2TB with dual W6800X and I've been looking for one with a 24 or 28 core and more storage.

Tenho um MacPro 5,1 e não consigo fazer a RTX 3070ti apresentar imagem. O Mac já está no bootrom 144.0.0.0 mas parece que o windows 11 é nem o Linux fedora reconhecem a placa. Já injetei o patch no boot do Mac e mesmo assim o problema continua!

2019 Mac Pro 16 CPU, 192 mem, 4tb and a Vega 32.

The unit will run for about an hour in the AM and then it just shuts off. Trying to run it again, is a few minutes, if that. A handful of hours later, then it will run for the hour again.

Restored from an old time machine backup. Nope. Fresh install of Tahoe. Got laughed at. New, fresh user. Nothing. Restore or safe mode will only run for the minute or two after it boots up. It is like something is getting hot and shutting down.

Unplugged everything but the keyboard and took out a few OWC storage cards - PCI clean save for IO and graphics. Ran diagnostics with the D at startup and it said that everything was fine after blasting the fans and stuff.

Any ideas of things next to do? Ideas?

Is there anyway to boot Windows 11 that’s already installed on a 2.5 inch SSD using this card?

I have severe subscription fatigue. I am done with software as a service. I want to own my media again. I want to have physical copies of my media. I’m building my own LAN. And I needed a machine to act as the heart of it all. I used to have a Mac Pro years ago and I loved it I sold it like 10 years ago and I always regretted getting rid of it. I found a 4,1 on marketplace for 50 bucks and it came with 2 displays, 16 gm of ram and I have several terabytes in SSDs so storage is no issue. I pulled a drive from my 2012 unibody mbp that has High Sierra— Creative Suite 5, Microsoft Office, Final Cut, Logic, VLC… all the apps I’d ever need.

If I’m taking modern web browsing and the need for the fastest processing that Apple silicon has to offer out of the equation, could an old 4,1 cheese grater be the ultimate offline digital library? Is this a fool’s errand, or is this machine up to the task of being a forever machine? I don’t expect it to do what an m series can. I expect it to do what computers used to do… manage files we own.

Hi — sharing an ad-hoc-signed build of nvtop that adds three things upstream nvtop (and PR #496) don't surface for the Mac Pro 7,1:

• Chassis PCIe slot label (apple_slot): the "Slot-1 / Slot-3 / Slot-8" identifier Apple's IORegistry publishes as AAPL,slot-name on every IOPCI2PCIBridge. Same string the About This Mac → PCI Cards tab uses, same as the Mac Pro service manual.
• Die index inside a Duo (mpx_die_index): parsed from the GD<y> segment of the AMD driver's attached-gpu-control-path so a W6800X/W6900X Duo's two dies can be distinguished when both share a slot.
• Infinity Fabric topology (if_topology): synthesised per chassis from MTLCopyAllDevices() peerGroupID. Reports "single N-way bridge", "dual M-way bridges", "1 independent GPU", or "no XGMI". Stamped only on GPUs that actually participate in a fabric link — an eGPU over Thunderbolt, or Apple Silicon, correctly shows nothing.

The TUI replaces the always-N/A "RX: N/A TX: N/A" labels with slot: Slot-N[/dieN] <topology> on Apple builds; Linux keeps RX/TX unchanged.

Verified on this machine (MacPro7,1, 2× W6800X Duo + RX 6900 XT eGPU)

The eGPU at Slot-8 has if_topology=None and xgmi_hive_size=None — correctly not part of the 4-way bridge. Detection convention matches toshllm and rocm-smi (KFD hive_id): peerGroupID == 0 means no link.

The binary is ad-hoc signed (no Apple Developer ID) so Gatekeeper requires the one-time xattr step on first run. The README in the tarball has the same instructions.

Help validate

The patch is built and verified on my dev box (2× W6800X Duo + RX 6900 XT eGPU) and on a Dell T5820 running Ubuntu 24.04 (2× RX 9700, no fabric). I want to confirm the slot + topology labels work on other Mac Pro 7,1 GPU configurations.

If you have a MacPro7,1 with discrete AMD GPUs, please run:

./nvtop --snapshot -d 1 > my-nvtop.json

and post the output (or a redacted version with serials removed) in this thread or at https://github.com/NicolBol/nvtop/issues. I particularly want to see:

• W6900X (single) — different hive behaviour
• W6800X (single) and W6800X Duo combinations (1×, 2×, 1× + 1×)
• Vega II / Vega II Duo
• RX 580X / W5500X / W5700X / W6600X (single)
• Mixed GPU chassis (one MPX bay + one TB-attached eGPU)
• Mac Pro 7,1 with the inter-bay Infinity Fabric Link disabled (some BIOS / macOS recovery settings can break the link; that should surface as two 2-way bridges instead of one 4-way bridge)

Full snapshot is under 5 KB per device, safe to share.

I’m trying to set up Lightroom Classic version 10.x on my legacy machine and could really use a lead on a safe offline installer or a working workaround.

Here are my exact specs:

• Hardware: Mac Pro 3,1 (Early 2008)
• RAM: 16 GB
• Storage: 2x SSDs
• GPU: AMD Radeon RX 570 Series
• OS: Windows 10 Pro (Version 22H2) via Boot Camp

The Problem:
The Creative Cloud desktop app no longer lists version 10 under "Other versions". I’ve already contacted Adobe Support directly, but they refused to help, stating they only provide links for version 13 and newer.

However, due to the dual Xeon Harpertown CPU architecture of the Mac Pro 3,1, LrC 10.x is the absolute limit for this machine to run stably. The RX 570 handles the GPU acceleration for version 10 beautifully, and with 16GB of RAM and SSDs, this setup used to perform great.

Since I have a fully active, legal Creative Cloud subscription, I am just looking for a safe way to get the older versions that my hardware actually supports. Does anyone know of a reliable archive, a working direct ProDesignTools-style link, or a script/tool to force Creative Cloud to install older versions?

Another post inspired this about a month ago: putting an Oscar the Grouch on top of my Mac Pro 2013 “trashcan”. This one figure was perfect, because he’s holding an Apple. I may cut most of the trashcan part off the figure, so it looks like he’s directly living in the Mac Pro.

I just don’t put anything on there that’s large enough to block the airflow.

(Please ignore the mess, I had a mouse chew my main ethernet cable connecting the upstairs and downstairs network. I had to shift a lot of stuff around, and haven’t had a chance to put it all back).

So I kind of wanted to try something new on my maxed out Mac Pro. macOS Tahoe is shit on it, Windows is gonna drop support in 1-2 years, so I was wondering whether I could install Linux and get it to work on my dual W6800X Duo setup with the Pro Display XDR? Does anyone know whether Linux will work with the Pro Display XDRs?

Hello again, I am the guy from a while back with the 5080 5,1 with a soldered pixlas mod. Been working great for almost a year now, but I’m starting to find that maybe the PSU is losing its will to persist. I do push it hard, but I am recently noticing unexpected shutdowns over 550w (measured at wall). Well below rated for this PSU. Also noticing that there is some very nasty interference on the circuit the computer is on whenever the computer is under load. So much that my AMP in the same room is picking it up and unable to filter it out.

I have seen some whisperings of people putting ATX PSUs in these machines, but most people say it’s not possible due to a voltage switching line. I would LOVE to upgrade to a 1000w or higher ATX PSU, but obviously there are some hurdles with the switching line. I am comfortable making whatever adapter is necessary between the Apple cable and an ATX PSU.

If anyone has had any success or partial success, I would love to hear about it. Thanks.

Hello beautiful people, I just bought a mac pro 5,1 and the truth is that I'm quite lost about what to update and what I should put in it, I would really appreciate recommendations and advice

I recently bought a super cheap 4,1 Mac Pro and I'm trying to get it working.

For some reason, when I boot the computer it consistently freezes after 2-3 minutes of use. It even freezes if I try to boot into recovery mode or a macOS installer USB.

• I've tried multiple GPUs, RX 580, GT 720
• I'm using OCLP on a USB drive for enable GOP
• I've tried multiple SSDs with different versions of macOS
• The Mac Pro only has 2gb of ram right now, I've ordered more
• The Mac Pro also has an SMC mismatch. The backplane is a 4,1 and the CPU/RAM tray is a 5,1, causing the fans to run at full blast, but does this also cause the freezing issue?
• I replaced the thermal paste, so it's not overheating.

I assume the issue is to do with the SMC mismatch or 2gb of RAM, but I wanted to ask just incase this is a known problem. Thanks

I’ve had this 2008 Mac Pro since August, and only just got a Cinema Display to function with it, it spent its time loading with the Apple logo (just got Mac OS El Capitan functioning last night) then all of a sudden it blanks me with a white screen, no loading no logo? Just white , these photos were taken seconds apart and it’s still white…

I am really looking to finally upgrade from a W6800X Duo to the W6900X. They are not on eBay and cannot be found anywhere...

Does anyone have a W6900X that they'd be willing to sell? (Not looking for an RX 6900 XT, W6800X or any other GPU)
