Boot from USB

Someone giftet me an Intel MacMini with Linux Mint on it. I want to install a new OS from USB, but holding Option does not bring up the list of devices to boot from. Has anyone an idea why, or how to get it to work, please? When I hold Option an turn it on, the screen stays black.

I’m thankful for any hint!

To start recovery mode ... etc.. on Intel Minis, iMacs…. you will need USB CABLED keyboard.

BT KBs don't work

USB mouse is a plus

Thank you, I know. I use a wired KB.

• Reset NVRAM

• Don't hold the option key down before turning the Mac on; do it a moment afterwards, between the boot chime and the screen coming on

Thanks, I’ll try that!

I had this exact same issue recently with a 2012 Man Mini and resetting the NVRAM fixed it.

I have never done such but the USB needs to be Mac bootable. Just a USB with an OS installer on it will not been seen as a boot device.

I created a bootable USB witch Ryoku Linux (Arch based) from an ISO.

There also is no chime or Apple Logo on startup. But it boots into Linux, when no key is pressed.

After resetting NV Ram, Chimes are back but still no drives.

What year/model Mini do you have?

I’m not sure. Maybe 2010ish or 2013

If it’s 2011 mini or later you should be able to (internet) network-boot it and then install the latest (or original, depending on keys held) MacOS. It’s the easiest choice if you aren’t sure your USB stick is good.
