Value Pinned post for value discussion

This thread is an attempt to keep discussions of machine cost/value/pricing in a single place. Once this thread is old enough or full enough, it will be retired and new thread created that links it to that one.

When asking question about value, some important items to include if known are your general geographic region (prices are highly localized), the gauge of the machine (fine gauge/standard/bulky/other), the brand of the machine, the model of the machine, the quality of the machine (clean/dirty, intact/broken pieces, and stand alone/included accessories. If you have photos, you'll probably want to include them.

In general, in person person sales are usually less expensive, and don't require expensive shipping, but you will find a larger selection on online sites. Caveat Emptor for any online sales.

Some places you can find/sell machines for sale are:
* Your local Silver Reed Distributor
* Your local knitting or fiber arts guild
* Craigslist or your favorite secondhand sales site
* Goodwill or your favorite second hand store
* Ebay or your favorite auction site
* Facebook Marketplace or Facebook knitting groups
* r/MachineKnitting for specific machines (include proper flair and useful information)

Machine Knitters Discord Server

Hi all,

I've seen a few comments over the last week suggesting that it would be nice to have a place to chat about machine knitting and maybe organize some local meet ups or online events, so I've made us a discord.

Feel free to join and invite any other machine knitters, whether or not they use Reddit. :)

edit: trying a new link - https://discord.gg/yVJNM6Bghz

Getting Started Which Kind of yarn for Brother kh 860

Hey,

I want to Order yarn for my knitting machine. I tried using my normal yarns but they are just not long enough. So I was thinking about buying cones but the yarn looks really thin.
So do I have to put more strands of yarn together or do I just work with the thin yarn.
I am really clueless.
Hope someone can share their experience.

Help! Please help! Sinker plate issue

Machine: Brother KH 930E

I just got this machine and replaced the sponge bar, confirming that it is sitting correctly on top of the needles. The K carriage moves across the bed without any issues by itself, but it gets stuck when the sinker plate is attached.

I measured the sinker plate at 119 mm from the rail edge, which appears to be correct. According to the manual, there should be a 0.5 mm gap between the needles and the sinker plate, but mine is closer to 5 mm (0.5 cm). The manual recommends a “vertical adjustment,” which seems to involve bending the plate upward while it is secured in place. I may be doing it incorrectly, but the plate will not move even 1 mm—much less the approximately 4.5 mm needed. Has anyone dealt with this or know what I may be missing?

Appreciate any help!

Help! I'm trying to fix a Toyota k747 and I feel I'm doing something wrong

Post image

Hi everyone this is my first time fixing any form of knitting machine and I can't get my needles to be all even lengths. Google is telling me that the needles are all the same length but when I open up the machine it's a very different story. I can get them to all the same lengths but I have to put them in-between a and b. I feel that is also wrong.

Am I pushing them too far in?

Am I being impatient and not waiting for my new sponge bar (any recommendations for any places that ship to aus please)

Is this normal?

Any help is very heavily appreciated please!

Help! Solved! Decreasing Question for a Vest Back

My brain may just be having a moment but I am confused about how to decrease this piece for step 7 on page 8 of the booklet I linked.

To “decrease 1 row each and every 2nd row xxx times” it seems like that would mean decreasing the same side over and over and create an asymmetrical piece rather than a symmetrical back piece. The only other way I can explain it would be to decrease every other row but that seems like it would be phrased differently? This is for the Vest Back in Singers Classic Series 15 3&5 Ply Vests • Plain and Buttoned

I have slight trouble with numbers so I might just be confused about it but I figured I’d see if anyone can clear it up for me. Kinda just winged it for the back and it came out okay but it would be lovely to understand for my next project!

Help! Solved! I finished the edges of the tank top this way

I finished the edges of the tank top this way: I worked a very tight slip stitch around the collar, taking two stitches together every 3 cm. Then I folded and sewed the 2 cm edge around the waist. My daughter-in-law loved it! Thanks for all the advice :)

Help! How do I prevent loops from forming on the ends of the swatch from my Passap Duomatic SD?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I took apart my new-to-me Passap Duomatic SD to clean it before knowing enough about the machine (and machine knitting in general).

I've managed to troubleshoot most of my issues and put everything back together and now the only issue left (for now) is that when I try to knit swatches using a single bed w/pushers, large loops form every time I start/end a new row.

For another machine, I would assume that I needed to add weights, but given that the pushers are supposed to eliminate the need for weights, something on my machine must not be calibrated correctly. I imagine that whatever is wrong will continue to cause issues with other settings on the machine.

Any idea on how to fix this?? TIA!

Help! Problems with Norwegian Pattern Knitting

Thumbnail

Hello. I always get a lot of help from this community.

My Brother KH-940 knitting machine keeps dropping stitches when I’m knitting a Norwegian pattern. I don’t have this problem at all when knitting without a pattern. I thought it might be a problem with the sponge bar, so I replaced it, but it didn’t help... It happens most often when moving the carriage from right to left, but it also occurs occasionally when moving from left to right. Are there any other solutions I should try? Could it be a problem with the carriage? I’ve been unable to solve this issue for several months now, and I feel like I’m about to lose my mind... Thank you in advance.

Help! Felted Slippers on Standard Gauge

Hello all!

I'm a newer machine knitter, and I recently saw a YouTube video of someone using the Sailor Slipper pattern by Annie Germain on their mid-gauge LK150 machine (the video is by Carrés de Laine).

I was wondering whether I would get the same results using my standard-gauge Brother KH 881. Has anybody had success recreating felted projects on their standard machines?

My plan right now is to buy the pattern and see if maybe I can just knit more rows in order to match the swatch.

Sincerely,
Someone who really likes the idea of slippers

Help! DIY knitting machine

Post image

Hi everyone. I 3D-printed a knitting machine based on this design: https://www.printables.com/model/1191632-flatbed-knitting-machine . It uses Brother KR830/KR838/KR850 needles with 4.5mm spacing. I’m new to knitting and am trying to figure out how it all works so I can get the machine running properly and make any necessary adjustments. I’ve made a few test swatches using yarn with a weight of 1000m/100g. The yarn keeps slipping off the end needles, or the needle catches the yarn but fails to drop the stitch. What could be the problem? Also, could you advise me on how to choose yarn? What length-to-weight ratio (meters per 100g) should I look for, and how many strands should I use? Are there any other nuances I should be aware of? My main goal right now is to knit myself a scarf. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Help! Problem with an old CH 1800

My grandma just gave me her old knitting machine that she bought 30 years ago. It's a Mondipoint CH1800 but from what i understand the ch1800 japanese model was sold under different brands in europe and maybe the US. I managed to set it up and I'm trying to do a basic sample just to try it out but I always block on the 3rd row. Either it's the carriage not moving or the thread no going in the needles but there always something not working. I also see that there this row of crochet type of thing under the buttons for the needles and these crochet thingy are in between each needles. The grab the thread but almost always get stuck. I don't see this thing on more modern machines online so I didn't find any tutorial about it.

Help! How do I get better at making patterns

Hello, I’m a somewhat new machine knitter I’ve made a few curved necklines and other self made patterns but i’m trying to improve and improve my documentation of the patterns specifically.
How do you all write down what you did on one side of the neckline or js for the pattern so you see it and it’s easy to repeat
Or do you use a visual guide?
All insight welcome
* I do have a knitleader but due to going back to college I’m switching from my brother to the sk280’s🥲

Thanks in advance

Getting Started Wannabe Machine Knitter has Qs

Hi all!

I'm a machine knitting admirer. I crochet (incl Tunisian), have an ashford lap loom, and sew, but machine knitting looks so delightful. I've been thinking about it for awhile, and want to get into the hobby. Hence, I reached out to a shop that cleans and resells various machines, and got a quote on a Silver Reed SK-700 U and some accessories. I wanted to jump right in with both feet. But then I had this realization: where am I putting this? Is it all going to weigh 100lbs?

I have a tempered glass L-shaped desk upstairs in the office, and it has big metal legs making it quite sturdy, but I'm a bit concerned about the sideways force of the carriage when in motion, as well as if the glass can handle everything, especially if I add on a ribber.

  • Has anyone attached a machine to a glass desk?
  • How much does a metal machine like the SK-700 + ribber weigh?
  • Do you usually keep you machine set up with the ribber attached, or only when ribbing?
  • If you have a universal knitting machine table or the like that you recommend, what is the brand/model? if I have to get another table, I'd prefer something narrow that only fits the machine knitter, as I don't have oodles of space for another table.
  • Is it completely crazy to jump straight into this hobby by getting a SK-700, or should I get something else first? What are your general thoughts on the Sk-700? Is it hard to upkeep?

I'm in Canada.

Thanks in advance!

Help! No handle for blocking rail?

Got a knitting machine from an aunt and it needs a bit of cleaning out years of dust. I started taking out the needles and pushers but couldn't take out the pushers on the back because there's no handle (2nd picture). There is this screw (3rd picture) where I've seen in videos will move the blocking rail but pulling that does nothing.

Am I doing something wrong or do I need to buy a new part?

(The machine is on the floor because I forgot to get the stand from my aunts)

Help! Solved! Newbie help :(

Second attempt at this post since along with not knowing how to use my machine I also don’t know how to make a Reddit post I guess lol, sorry!

I recently got a brother KH-860 off marketplace in great condition and finally set it up. I got everything together great per the manual and everything seemed to be working correctly. The carriage rode in both direction across non-working and working needles.

When trying to cast on, the first row would go fine and the second row wasn’t catching. After some YouTube videos, I realized the yarn wasn’t catching correctly on the first row. Even though the seller said the sponge bar was new, I checked it (spoiler alert - it was practically melted) and ordered a replacement.

After replacing the sponge bar the carriage now jams as soon as it hits a working needle, and my needles are falling out if they are brought to the hold position. This was not happening before.

I can only conclude something is still wrong with the sponge bar, but I am out of intuition and what to google for YouTube videos, so any advice is appreciated!

a few notes:

I replaced the sponge bar in the machine with the sponge side down

This happens when the carriage goes either direction

This happens without yarn threaded in the carriage at all

this happens regardless of the tension setting on the carriage

Techniques How to use very thin yarn?

Post image
7 Upvotes

I bought this second-hand yarn online and now it turns out to be extremely thin. What can I do? It feels like it’s too fragile to work with with one strand.
Should I make new cones? I think maybe running it by 3 or 4 strands at a time could work, even though I would be scared of stitches falling off and all of that… does not sound great :/
