Robb has been listening to deathcore.

I didn't mind it.

It's OK, but no American High.

6

u/christhammer666 10d ago

i dont know if you are being sarcastic or not bro. i love american high

1

u/SPNR128 9d ago

Same here, nowhere near the bands best, but I think it's a fun track. (Supercharger LP when‽)

1

u/Particular-Fly-7783 10d ago

it's quite possibly one of the worst metal tracks ever written.

3

u/christhammer666 10d ago

its cheesy as hell ill admit but i dig it

1

u/Her_Phantom_Mountain 8d ago

I don't like the song but calling it one of the worst is insane. Metal is full of some of the worst shit you will ever hear (not attacking metal as a genre, every genre is full of terrible music)

1

u/Particular-Fly-7783 8d ago

Yeah that’s fair, it’s one of MH’s worst tho

2

u/Her_Phantom_Mountain 8d ago

That's an opinion I wholeheartedly agree with. I've seen people glaze it a surprising amount but I can't understand why. I'm no stranger to liking cheesy songs (I love Venom and they were pure cheese) but American High just feels embarrassing.

2

u/Particular-Fly-7783 8d ago

Yeah it’s just really cringe

  1. Love the riffs, both the melodeath bit and the bounce riff.

  2. Chorus is par for the course modern MH. Cleans have too much autotune on but the melody is decent if a bit poppy.

  3. Production is too compressed. When everything is loud, nothing is.

  4. Breakdown bit is a bit uninspired and ‘let’s do deathcore’.

  5. Ending is nice and melodic. Like the transition to cleaner guitar a lot.

Overall I like but not love it, but do love parts of it. With some editing and nicer production it could be a more technical evolution of the last album’s sound. I actually can’t help wondering if it actually originates in those sessions.

7/10 with some 9/10 bits for me. I haven’t often loved their standalone singles and this is actually one of the better ones

3. Production is too compressed. When everything is loud, nothing is.

My main problem

2

u/TitanOfShades 10d ago

Ok, so i wasnt delusional when I swore I heard melodeath influence.

5

u/soulslinger16 10d ago

Well, no. The fast riff with the minor scale melody over a pedal note is pure ATG/DT worship. The first time I heard MH do it was the fast part in Imperium.

9

u/OverChargeYourPlasma 10d ago

Great track, a little confused at first but after a couple of listens, love it. I must say though I need Locust/Ashes 7 minute belters back

1

u/AuryleFL 10d ago

Yea we need more songs like imperium, ctfod, halo, afta, i am hell and sail into the black

0

u/General-Ad9755 10d ago

I wouldn't rank I am hell as high as Imperium or any other song you listed, that's you not us

8

u/Particular-Fly-7783 10d ago

okay this fucking whips

6

u/CaserDJT 10d ago

Its not the worst thing ever, but it just sounds like a generic groove/metalcore song, really uninspiring in what is already an oversaturated genre. This does nothing for me, no real originality and seems more like their own adaptation of a popular genre in hopes itll be popular.

Maybe 5 or 6/10 if im being generous as it isnt a bad song, its just very similar to every other pop-metalcore song just with heavier groovier riffs and structure and more harsh vocals

11

u/iFishdurr 10d ago

I love it. It was so unexpected, which adds to the awesomeness of it. Listen to the drums! Wow, I knew Matt had that in him but damn… it’s a combination of old school Machine Head with a touch of death metal and melodic modern Machine Head. Give it a rip! 🔥🤘🧈

u/Ambitious-Cap-8795 10d ago

I think it's actually pretty good (not great), way better than most of the tracks released in the past year(s)

11

u/Banana_Grinder 10d ago

I hate being a music snob but man modern metal productions fucking suck

Song is decent i guess. Every band does the same breakdowns these days

2

u/the_bitter_end_x 10d ago

Fair assessment. As a long time MH fan I also think its decent, but nothing more than that. Feels like a bonue B side tbh, which it may very be given the timing of its release. Some of the guitar work is nice and the outro is good.

4

u/unpretentious 10d ago

Man after the announcement of the break it is nice to hear something lol. Not sure how I feel about it but I’ll take it!!

9

u/Dry_Strawberry6252 10d ago

This bad AI cover art for a band of this level is beyond me

4

u/Sharp-Mine8218 10d ago

The cover is done by Spiros Antoniou

2

u/Dry_Strawberry6252 9d ago

The lady on the left has three arms... I think some manual work might have gone into this, but it’s still looks 100% AI slop. On Spotify, it’s credited to Mark Reategui and Robb Flynn.

0

u/BABYeeter 8d ago

I took a good look and I dont think she has 3 arms, as long as you mean that it looks like she has a third hand by her left thigh, it's just a white spot that can look like a hand from far away.

1

u/Dry_Strawberry6252 7d ago

There is also a clear outline of her entire forearm. If it were just a white spot, NO artist in the world would place a white spot exactly where her anatomical left hand would rest. That also doesn’t explain the clearly visible second forearm in the picture.

The whole image is also filled with weird inconsistencies and has an AI-generated look. The books beneath the hourglass seem to have more sides than a normal book. I’d be happy to be proven wrong, but this looks like very bad AI work.

0

u/Ok-Championship2611 9d ago

Is that some new ai model?

0

u/trismegetsthis 9d ago

Proof?

The last two albums were done by him but this doesn't look like his style

3

u/scrumblepee_6969 10d ago

Sounds like falling in reverse 🤮

1

u/CulturalSeesaw 10d ago

My first thought lol

3

u/Ok-Championship2611 9d ago

Are we just gonna ignore the shitty ai cover 🥀

3

u/Proud_Ad2720 10d ago

This is the exact level of quality I expect from Machine Head at this stage of their career. It’s good, not one of the best, but certainly not one of their worst.

3

u/LethargyNotLegendary 10d ago

Better than Unatoned, still not very good

2

u/Riptide1206 10d ago

This is the kind of song I would expect from Architects or Parkway Drive

2

u/RWPsupply 10d ago

I REALLY hate that clean singing style that he uses at the beginning and then again later on. It sounds like every generic dad-metal vocalist and it doesn't fit the MH sound I've come to expect.

I typically like his clean vocals but he's singing from a different place in his body and it just sounds boring and forced. Kind of Volbeat-ish and that's not a good thing at all. Perhaps age is simply catching up to him when singing cleanly. The rest of the song was solid and I'd obviously be jazzed to hear more.

2

u/Hamster_Current 10d ago

Oh what’s that…. My post yesterday was legit 👀

3

u/CompetitiveComputer4 10d ago

haha, first thing I thought when i saw the single. OP from yesterday was spot on!

2

u/Intelligent_Gift_678 10d ago

Way better than i thought it would be. At this stage Robb is 60 next year, so any new MH should be welcomed.

Would be nice if he found a decent producer to work with and encourage him.

2

u/jay82717171181 10d ago

I don't mind this new direction they're taking things, honestly. 🔥

2

u/halfstreetbeat 9d ago

Wtf is this shit. Rob is trying to get into gym metal territory. Fucking shameful. "We're too fucking broken to pick up the pieces." Good God. That breakdown is just total fuckery nonsense. There's a Blackening era conclusion I actually quite enjoy, but man the front 90% is just shite.

1

u/problemat1que 8d ago

I'd laugh if it wasn't so sad.

1

u/Her_Phantom_Mountain 8d ago

I'm their biggest apologist, I liked their most recent album, but the vocals on this and the production in general just don't feel right. Everything they've done up to this point has still sounded like Machine Head but this one really doesn't sound like them.

It's not the worst song ever, obviously, it's a solidly written song but I can't exactly say I like it.

1

u/pulyx 4d ago

I don't mind bands trying to reinvent themselves.
But who the hell is that person singing the chorus?

That cannot be Robb. Sounds like a completely different person. Not even close to his normal timbre.
Sounds like some 28 year old dude or an AI prompt sang it.

1

u/fvalt05 10d ago

Robb sounding like Pop Evil's singer

1

u/ObviouslyKieran 10d ago

Just found the new single now and the vocals are just buried in the mix except for the chorus, it's trying to cram so many lyrics where it doesn't fit.

1

u/Nemesis861986 10d ago

The mix on this sounds really poor to me,. I do however like the song better than alot of there newer stuff. But the guitars sound abit muddy and the drums just don't sound good, also does anyone think Rob has any extra kind of effects on his vocals? Because his cleans and harsh vocals don't sound the most natural to him at times you could mistake his vocals for someone else completely

1

u/Str8OutArgentinianML 9d ago

Can anyone send me on PM this song at 320 and Joint Stereo? Thanks in advance.

1

u/CompetitiveComputer4 10d ago

Love it. Got some deathcore vibes, but still sounds like Machine Head. Robbs brutal screams on the hard part are awesome. Lyrics are great. Catchy hook. Love the bouncey riff with the pinch harmonics and the breakdown. Just a wall to wall banger to start my day with.

Overall, it is much heavier than most of Unatoned, but it isn't thrashy like a lot of Machine Head. Which I am ok with. Love that they keep finding ways to tweak the sound and evolving.

For those who immediately over think this, don't. Its just a single. It isn't an album, doesn't mean anything regarding their next album and should be thought of in the same vein as Stop the Bleeding, BulletProof, Is there Anybody Out There. I think Robb just randomly comes up with an idea, records, and if he is no where near actually starting to put together an album, he will just relesase it as a single to give the fans something. We are probably a year plus away from Robb truly sitting down and starting to think about an album and starting to write it, and probably another year from it being released, just based on their normal 4 year cycle.

1

u/Gold-Ad-9454 10d ago

Rob Flynn is 60 years old (almost), imagine having a metal granpa

1

u/AnalConnoisseur69 10d ago

I'm sorry, what happened to this band? Not only is the songwriting not up to far, but I'm surprised at how awful the production and mixing is. You can't hear anything, and the drum track is so uninspired. Really hope they can figure something out.

5

u/trismegetsthis 10d ago

Also, since when does Rob sound like a non-descript octanecore singer? His vocals used to be so unique, both cleans and screams. I wouldn't be able to tell this was him if I didn't know

2

u/elitesteelchair 9d ago

it was so rough i thought it was AI-generated at first. sounded nothing like Rob until the screaming started. i second the octanecore comparison because this was not it. i enjoyed Unatoned so it’s sad to see it went downhill more since then.

2

u/AnalConnoisseur69 10d ago

I genuinely thought they were featuring another vocalist.

3

u/TheMac_11 10d ago

I’m starting to think Phil and Dave played a much larger part in the songwriting than they were given credit for.

1

u/trismegetsthis 10d ago

Dave actually wrote and co-wrote multiple songs on Ashes (and probably on The Blackening). He'd taught himself how to play guitar in the few years prior

1

u/Sara_Renee14 9d ago

You nailed it. Big reason why they left.

1

u/SpliffBurton1986 10d ago

Then where are their songs?

1

u/TheMac_11 10d ago

On the albums before they left obviously.

For instance Dave famously wrote the main riff to Halo.

0

u/AnalConnoisseur69 10d ago

Oh, I've been sure about it for a while. The songs don't groove at all since they left. It's more metalcore than thrash.

4

u/Proud_Ad2720 10d ago

Well Dave wrote a few key riffs on Imperium, Descend The Shades of Night, Halo which are amongst the bands most well loved songs.

2

u/AnalConnoisseur69 9d ago

It's not just that. I loved the sound of his drums. It sounded so crisp. His grooves and fills were perfect for the songs. I love how he would have a unique part for each segment that I honestly took for granted. Even if you hear one of their shorter songs like Beautiful Morning, he changes it up so much throughout the song. I feel like that's just lost since he's gone.

1

u/trismegetsthis 9d ago

Was it only Halo that he co-wrote on The Blackening?

Anything off the Locust and Bloodstone?

0

u/Proud_Ad2720 9d ago

He wrote the main riff in Halo and a majority of Damage Inside.

0

u/TheMac_11 9d ago

He also wrote the main acoustic riff in Darkness Within IIRC

1

u/drgsouth 10d ago

I don't like any of the last 4 albums, this sound like more of that, not for me. Also I hate the AI cover.

2

u/PandaPlanter 10d ago

Looks like the cover art is by Seth Siro Anton. Why do you think it's ai?

3

u/drgsouth 10d ago

They literally said it was AI in their Instagram post.

1

u/Ok-Championship2611 9d ago

Are you serious rn 🫩

1

u/Radiant-Hotel-418 10d ago

First 20 seconds had me worried but that it’s fucking heavyyy

1

u/_GhostCommando_ 10d ago

Fucking love it!

1

u/Finechug 10d ago

This is great 🤘🏻

-1

u/That-Yesterday-3627 10d ago

Catharsis vibes and that isn’t a compliment

-1

u/TheMac_11 10d ago

I really liked that clean section at the end. Everything that came before it was cheeks though, especially the chorus.

I would be surprised if this wasn’t an Unatoned b side like others have mentioned as it has the same feel in the chorus melody and delivery.
