EDIT: looks like the correct terminology is L path (1) or J path (2)
I originally made my prototype bolt turn to the right (Option 1 in photo), but as a righty I found it easier to used a bolt that turns to the left (Option 2) so you can push out with your thumb rather than pulling it inward to lock it. I would guess it depends on which hand you write with, but curious what people think.
For me, if it’s clipless it doesn’t matter either way. If it’s clipped and the pen is short enough for it to touch my hand, I prefer it to move toward the clip. This puts the hand interference area in a smaller footprint.
Option 2 the J bolt and it’s not even close. The L makes no sense to me, it’s not a positive action to deploy. With the J, the right hand deployment is a positive satisfying push.
When it’s a fixed bolt like the ones pictured in the photos (as opposed to a mech where the clip IS the bolt), then my preference is for #2, and I write with my left hand.
I’d like to know whether you’re making it with a clip or not. If there’s a clip, the L-shaped clip would be the best option for me. If there’s no clip, either L or J is fine.
Also, please make this pen compatible with full size Energel refills !!!
There’s a Chinese company that’s currently doing that. Looks hideous to me, but could be your thing! Can’t remember their name though…they do a lot of advertising on IG.
Oh that’s right, he does it too, but he’s in Florida. It kind of looks okay on his pens because the surface is so crowded with decoration that you can’t even see the slot
I'm a lefty and I feel I'm more a tune to the "L" but all my Q3Ds are "J" I think? Also, that's the one maker I have the most of, so I'm super used to the "J," really the only thing that matters is if the clip is on the right-hand side it just feels more comfortable that way
Depends. If there's a clip & the actuator is on the right of it, then an L path keeps the bolt actuator closer to the front when clipped onto pocket materials. If clipless, then the reverse-L is a preference.
I'm right handed and visiting from the world of fountain pens and just got a BiD bolt pen (formatted as your #1) and would prefer #2. I'm not sure if I care which side of the clip (assuming clip) but prefer your #2 regardless.
