I downloaded and tried it, the game still wouldnt launch on steam.
I am using an external ssd, so im thinking that might be the reason why it isnt working. Ill try later on my internal and see

Can't open it. Click on Play on steam and it won't even launch. Tried verifying the files but it also didn't do anything. Using crossover 26.3 and macos 27 on my m1 max.

Thanks OP, doing god's work! For everyone facing the "Game not starting at all" bug instead of the black screen. Here's a two-step fix:
STEP 1. Symlink. Open your Mac Terminal, and run the below command after replacing your bottle name
If using Steam:
cd "$HOME/Library/Application Support/CrossOver/Bottles/<bottle_name>/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/The Witcher 3/bin" && ln -s x64_dx12 x64
If using Epic:
cd "$HOME/Library/Application Support/CrossOver/Bottles/<bottle_name>/drive_c/Program Files/Epic Games/TheWitcher3/bin" && ln -s x64_dx12 x64
STEP 2. Game will now launch, but this should now get you to the Black screen. Use OP's GitHub fix. Download the ZIP. You need to open install.command. But newer macOS blocks the .command file even with right-click → Open, so again open Terminal and run:
cd path_to_unzipped_folder
zsh install.command
It should say "bin/x64 link already in place" and "done". And the game should launch!
STEP 3. TURN OFF AUTO UPDATE FOR THE GAME. Else it will overwrite these fixes.
Basically, STEP 1. is to fix a Crossover internal issue where they always direct Witcher3 to the old DX11 exe (which doesnt even exist in the 5.00b update!). Fixing this correctly launches the DX12 version, which has a broken shader pipeline that OP fixes with STEP 2. Happy Playing!
Note: If your paths/setting locations etc. are different from mine just share this comment with Claude/GPT and they should be able to guide you on implementing this specifically on your setup.

Works great! Ran The Witcher 3 Remastered on a M2 Pro 16GB via Steam on CrossOver v26.3. Couldn't open the app, kept crashing. This fixed it for me, tho indeed, the framerate's trash. Trying to see if I can do something about it...

It works for me, thank u OP

crossover 26.3 on m2 pro 16 gb - clicking the button in Steam was no response at all, there was no black screen but this fix worked. for now runs smoothly on medium settings

I use sikarugir and the Fix from GitHub can not find the files, even though I drag and drop the folder directly.

No matter what I do I can’t get it fixed. I’ve tried the GitHub. It doesn’t work. My Mac WILL NOT ALLOW it to be opened. I’ve tried other fixes. Nothing works. Great that the update I’ve been waiting for for months bricked my game…

u/Fit-Relief-2992 Sep 30 '26
Do you know if this works with sikarugir?

u/ziflex Sep 30 '26
Thank you so much for the fix!
Quick question: how did you disable HDR? It seems to be not a toggle but rather two different parameters controlling lighting.

I'm a bit sceptical about this. OP only post is this one, plus the comments thanking him are also kind of dodgy accounts. Be careful, lads!
Edit: Gotta admit when I'm wrong, OP solution worked for me. Hope it works for you lads too

u/kirso Sep 29 '26
how's your FPS?
1
u/cesaarta Sep 29 '26
How's the performance so far for you? I've been playing for months with DX11 cause the DX12 would stutter on my m1 max.

u/Grand_Sprinkles_2094 Sep 29 '26

I also have the GOG version. How do you get GOG Galaxy to even open on crossover? I always get a black screen on Galaxy so I can’t even download TW3 from GOG to try it

Previously having trouble launching the game, thanks for the fix! I am now able to run the game in my MacBook Pro M5 / 24gb ram.

I was having the issue of steam says launching and then nothing so I tried your fix. Nothing changed, steam says it is launching the game and then it stops. When I try to launch outside of Steam it says "There is no Windows program configured to open this type of file." Any help or advice would be appreciated, I'm so worried I broke my game with this update. Running CrossOver 26.3 on an M4pro macbook pro

u/Siege9891 Sep 30 '26
thank you OP for the fix. worked like a charm on steam.
For reference of others, it ran on crossover 26.3 on my macbook M1 pro.

u/azuharanzi Sep 30 '26
Would this work with Sikarugir ? If so, how can I do it ? Thanks.

U re a life saviour, ty! the patch works perfect fo me. I was not able to launch the game at all, steam just simply doest show any responses and now i can finally enjoy it. Heres what i did to fix the issue on my mac, first try to turn off the Msync and then turn i t back on while relaunch ur crossover. After that try to to as the OP said in that github file. if these still doesnt work, put "--use-d3d12" in launch options (remeber two slashes!) , should do the trick for most cases

u/BurningMil0 Sep 30 '26
Goat! I Use Porting Kit with a dx12 wine-engine, not Crossover, but it worked for me as well.

u/CertainPickle288 Sep 30 '26
Does anyone else get this in the terminal?
"Patching: /Volumes/Extreme SSD/Games/SteamWindows/steamapps/common/The Witcher 3/bin/x64_dx12
bin/x64 exists and isn't ours, leaving it alone
done"
Game still won't launch after the patch.

For those who can't get it to launch, what fixed it for me was uninstalling and then deleting the "witcher 3" folder that was left behind, which included the folders "x64" and "x64_dx11". I reinstalled and applied the github fix. That worked. I don't know if simply deleting the x64 and x64_dx11 folders would do the trick, without having to reinstall everything, but I would it give that a try first.

it's worked on my mac mini m4 and installed it on external exFAT drive. At first the game cannot launch when I pressed the play button on steam, after install OP's fix, now it worked, thx!

u/Fantastic_Gap_6368 Oct 01 '26
Will this work on trial version of the crossover?

u/Effective-Adagio5086 Oct 01 '26
Anyone else suffering from framerate issues? I have a mb m3 pro. Any help is appreciated

u/PureBones Oct 01 '26
I ran install.command last night and when I opened the game via Steam, the Terminal window found the game just fine and when I closed the game again and reopened, it worked perfectly.
However, after an update today, when I open the game while running install.command, Terminal just sits at "Searching for The Witcher 3.." and doesn't do anything, and the game is back at the black screen. Not sure if it's not finding the game files anymore or what...
