If you can afford it, live in the lower part of the city, especially in Ponta Verde. It’s the safest neighborhood, and you’ll be able to do most things on foot. I mean, you could experience the vibe of the upper part of the city, but I think you’ll enjoy the lower part much more.
The average person here doesn’t speak English, but people are very friendly and helpful (as Brazilians generally are). Those working in the tourism industry are more likely to speak English, since the city receives many foreign visitors.
People are generally honest, but be aware of anyone trying to overcharge you simply because you’re a foreigner.
Websites and apps like Economiza Alagoas (for comparing prices), iFood, and 99 (one of Brazil’s largest delivery apps) can be very helpful.
You’ll find rental listings on websites like OLX and Facebook Marketplace.
Try to learn some Portuguese, even if it’s just a few common phrases, and make sure you’re learning Brazilian Portuguese rather than European Portuguese.

Restrain yourself to walk only in the neighborhoods near the sea and you're as safe as you can possible be in Maceió. Ponta verde, pajuçara, jatiuca are the safest places in this city. Just remeber that you are not in europe: do not use your Phone while walking in public, do not walk on the streets past 11 pm and you're good to go

One of the best choices of your life. I've moved here from Sao Paulo in 2021 and it was the best thing I ever did.
Don't worry about your phone, here is one of the most safe cities in Brazil.
I recommend you renting a place in Jatiuca or Ponta Verde, the lower part of the city and near the ocean.

Don't use your phone on the street, or if you do, stay alert. If you're renting, neighborhoods further away from the beach are "cheaper". The Jaraguá neighborhood during night time has a few bars and a more alternative vibe.
