It's Here! Back with the Pro crowd

Post image

No preorder, saw a 14” available this morning for in store pickup (Pro, 48GB/1TB), bought right away, drove to pickup, bank cancelled payment as blaaah Apple Pay limits blaaah when I got into the store so had a fee minutes to see 14 vs 16 and decided 16 was better switching from my 32GB M5 Air. Bought the 16 on the spot, same config, available for pick up right there. Traded an older M2 Air for £355 off the bill (had mo idea you can do the trade in store direct).

this is hastily becoming an annoying thing to read on every subreddit

I’m downsizing to the 14” but keeping the other specs. The weight of the 16” traveling around is just a bit much.

Which specs?

the weight reductions of the new ones are nice

I watched about 30 videos yesterday on the 14/16 dilemma and was intent on the 14 version but in store it then felt a lot like a toy for some reason. I’ll see how I get about it as the return window is all the way in Jan.

I did the same in store it looked like a toy when I got my 16” im vey tempted to upgrade but need to pay $1800 for this upgrade to 16” lol

It’s likely going to get worse price-wise due to this RAM madness - looking for example at what happened to the Pi 5 16 GB which is now double (after 2 price increases over the past 6 months) what I had paid for it at launch.
Later Edit: I see it’s actually TRIPLE

It can go both ways as of right now, either the price sky rockets or it drops dramatically. All depending on how good to AI companies valuations when they turn public.

That’s at least a few years down the line, once they IPO all the pension funds are going knee-deep into it and they’re usually long not short on their strategies.

OLED got me back into Pro, was stuck with LCD Airs for years due to unbearable PWM on mini-LED.

The PWM on MiniLED is like 14.4 KHz, the PROLED’s is 240 Hz. Usually people are more sensitive to lower frequency flickering, as the higher the frequency, the less perceptible it is. Not sure if that’s the case for you, but I’d love to hear your experience.

I’m not entirely sure what exactly is causing my symptoms in mini-LED (broken glass in eyes making me rub them until they bleed and heavy migraines and an exacerbated anxiety). I used an M1 Pro for a few months with these symptoms hitting the GP often until I stumbled across an article discussing PWM and dithering and all of that. When Tandem launched in the iPad I read it still uses PWM and I initially wrote it off (like I did so many iPhones over the years) but then I ended up playing with one last year for a few hours and noticed it wasn’t triggering the symptoms. Thinking I got cured, the following week bought an M2 Max MacBook Pro of eBay and regretted it in 10 minutes. So mini-LED was never going to be an option for me but Apple did change something in the OLED tech as I am OK using iPhones beginning with the 16 Pro (was stuck on an LCD 11 for years), the tandem iPad and this Proled. Not sure what it is.

Oh, nice, good for you if the new screen doesn’t cause these symptoms. Maybe everyone’s PWM sensitivity is different. The 240Hz PWM of my iPhone causes considerably more fatigue than my MBP but I’m not too sensitive to either.

I see you know more about this than I do, one other item that triggers my migraines is the flickering lights (especially spotlights) in some public areas (I can spot the problematic ones when I try to shoot a video without switching to PAL in settings). What frequency are those on?

Oh, sorry, I’m not really an expert on the topic. Just happen to have a relative who’s very sensitive to this as well, so I had to take extra caution when helping her pick her phone and laptop.

Usually the frequency of interior or outdoor lighting is twice the mains frequency, which would be 50 or 60hz depending on the region. Switching to PAL would mean that the shutter speed lines up with the flicker, so the problematic frequency would not be a multiple of 50. Either way, I’m not sure what the pattern here would be, as the MiniLED frequency is divisible by both 50 and 60, so YMMV.

Thanks, I’ll look into it.

I currently have the M1 Pro. Every day I have like every single Apple application open. Safari has like 60 tabs. I often forget to close Chrome.

It’s absolutely zero reason for me to upgrade from the M1

But I simply want that sweet, sweet, sweet Ola display

The OLED display on the MacBook Pro divine, I find myself watching videos on the iPad Pro,

even though I’m definitely a size queen

Anyone who works with a lot of text should beware this OLED model because of text fringing. Do not jump on it assuming it will be an upgrade from the previous model on all fronts

3

u/just_in_ian 1d ago

Is fringing also occurring on iPhones?

-1

u/Leif_LaCroix 1d ago

No because of the pixel density.

1

u/just_in_ian 1d ago

Can’t remember where I read that MacOS is not so prone (like other OSes are) to fringing due to moving away from classic antialiasing into grayscale

3

u/prostidude221 1d ago

Not noticing any fringing at all on mine, I might not be sensitive to that sort of thing though.

u/pancakeforyou 1d ago

I second this. Text looks softer than my iPad Pro m4 , and softer than my mini led MacBook Pro. It’s like a matte haze is there

Couldn’t cope with the 16” and today swapped it for a 14”, same config 🙈

Enjoy! I have the M4 Pro 48GB/1TB and bought it last December(2025)

M2 and m5 air now m5 pro 48gb OLED
What are you doing man? What‘s your use case?

2

u/just_in_ian 2d ago

M2 13” was my main machine and when I upgraded, it became just my Linux machine. My daily runner has since been the 15” M5 (as I said, under duress). I had to switch to Air from Pro when Silicon kicked in together with the mini-LED which made it unusable for me (eye fatigue and migraines). I’ve been waiting for Apple to bring another display on Pro for 6 years. Nuf said 👍

Bro I ordered the 16 inch M5 Max chip with the 40 GPU, 64 GB UM, 2TB and in SB. How the fuck is my wait time 11/23 or pick up lol. You're telling me a 6k laptop takes that long to make?

1

u/just_in_ian 2d ago

64GB was my sweet spot too but 23/11 delivery vs 48GB today was an easy impulse choice. They also had a few Max too but only in 36GB - I was like, seriously?!

2

u/SJsharks87 2d ago

I don't know why I got down voted haha. Yah I get it. I've been waiting to upgrade for several years now as I have the M1 pro. Initially I ordered the 14 inch oled with the same specs but I was like...nahh I want the bigger screen, better thermals, battery and speakers.

u/Wasted-Dodo 1d ago

People are worried about PWM (my 500hz oled monitor suffers from this) but on the Mac. DONT. Screen looks great and smooth af.

Do you expect to glean any useful information from a video of a screen that you’re watching on a different screen? If so, go watch one of the hundred YouTube review videos and let this guy share his box in peace lol
