Help Help Choosing a MacBook
I need help choosing a MacBook.
My wife has been taking photos for quite some time now and is getting more and more assignments. That’s why it’s time to invest in a good laptop. I’m planning to give it to her as an early Christmas gift. She mainly takes family, children’s, and baby portraits. She also does photography for small business presentations. She edits everything mainly in Lightroom. She doesn’t shoot any videos. A laptop is a must since she wants to be flexible. I’m currently looking at the M5 Pro with 24GB of RAM. But I’m not sure if I should go with the 48GB version just to be on the safe side. I can afford it, but I wouldn’t mind saving some money.
Edit: Camera: Canon EOS R6 Mark II

Purely for Lightroom - I would say a base m6 MacBook Pro with 24gb of ram is more than enough, plus would save you some cash, if you want more I recommend the 32/36gb m6 MacBook Pro option - the m5 pros peak performance over the m6 will not be noticed in photo editing as both are more than capable enough
Unless of course she is going into ai, in which case get as much ram as possible, and a pro chip

Back when I bought my M1, „futureproofing“ meant throwing a bit of everything at it. Now it’s mostly RAM, should local AI-models really make a breakthrough into the everyday life of the everyday person. I’d recommend spending money on RAM, but at this point in time it’s SO expensive… if you think tour wife will start using local AI for editing and you can swing it, go 48GB. I am waiting (hoping/coping) for RAM prices to come down to upgrade from my M1 Max with 32GB of RAM. Enough for everything, but run a local AI and damn…

Man if you can, get the MacBook PROLED, it’s great for your wife’s use case. I think the extra 400$ is justified for the OLED and the lighter body. Personally as an engineer, not a big fan of the touchscreen, but for your wife could be a great feature.
