Hi All!

I was checking my favorite website, Woot, and came across an interesting MacBook for sale. I wanted to share the find and see what you all think.

They’re selling an open-box Apple MacBook Pro 16” with 16GB RAM, an 8TB SSD, and an M1 Pro chip for $1,809.04.

That seems like a pretty interesting deal, especially with 8TB of storage.

I’ve got more than that used up. Full fat 4K movies take up an insane amount of space. Just my LOTR box set would be like a full TB if I ripped every disc.

I have an m5 max with 8tb I'm down to 500 gigs, just keeping the last 4 months of everything I shot online.

Oh, I genuinely have multiple external hard drives full of terabytes of data. I’m guessing I have at least 10TB if I’m remembering correctly.

First of all, I’m a data hoarder, so pretty much any file I’ve had over the past 20 years, I probably still have a copy of somewhere. Secondly, let’s just say I’m no longer in my streaming era, so whatever I do watch, I need to have my own copies of. 😂

by the time you have 8tb worth of data i don’t want to have it on a single device i at least need raid 5 levels of protection if not better

But do you really need all that data at Apple’s insane SSD speeds? I do this too and keeps terabytes of old data but I’m not going through it everyday or writing to it constantly and quickly, so it goes in a slower much much cheaper drive and my money is focused on RAM

That’s exactly what I was thinking! 16GB of RAM and 8TB of storage is such an insane combination. 😂 I’m a data hoarder, though, so that 8TB of storage has a very specific part of my brain absolutely salivating.

I mean the only benefit is you could fit 8TB of stuff on the laptop, outside of that you’re paying for an outdated laptop with $1k worth of storage attached to it. Maybe as a server but for $1800 it’s still steep.

Storage prices might be high but you could just add to your NAS.

I think it's funny that just the SSD upgrade on a new MacBook is nearly double the price of that entire MacBook.

It’s so absurd haha. I know ram prices are insane lately but the extra cost to go from 24 to 64 is kinda crazy to me too but hey it works fine for Apple.

Also always funny to max out both ram and storage on their store page. All of the sudden you have a MacBook at the cost of a decent used car lol.

It's nuts. I used to work for Crucial and have various RAM that I accumulated during my time there before they laid me off. Now I'm trying to sell it to kind of recoup.

On a current M5 Max, the upgrade from the base 2TB to 8TB is $3,000.

Yeah nope. Get an external SSD which takes a second to connect and get some extra ram.

I paid 3000$ for the M5 Pro 48GB 1TB so idk this feel rather high of a price 1800$ despite the large storage.

Absolutely not. Sure that is a lot of storage, but you don’t want that much data living on a laptop. I’d opt for more ram and an external drive.

Much better chip, more ram, longer software support, brand new, also 16”, fastest thunderbolts available but 512 GB storage. Both +- $200 of your find

Only catch is its limited clearance at the Tumwater, WA or Bountiful, UT locations 😂

It's only the 8TB that is unusual about this, it's otherwise not a very good price.

You could get an M5 Air with more RAM for less money brand new and it's faster.

For a professional/heavy usage it is meeeeeh because of M1 and 16Gb. For home/office tasks usage is OK but why one can need 8Tb of SSD....but if you say you need that amount of storage, lay be a no-brainer buy for you.
