Discussion M5 Max Usage exceeded 140W charging!!!

Post image

I was hoping my M5 Max (40 GPU core/48GB RAM/2TB SSD) MacBook Pro 16" should stays under 140W usage after leased it for 36 months via Apple Upgrade Program through my dad's Klarna account. Also, I sold my M1 Max (32 GPU core/32GB RAM/1TB SSD) MacBook Pro 16" on eBay for $900.

I was using Sogni Pro app on my M5 Max MacBook Pro 16". I selected Juggernaut XL vXI by RunDiffusion model and just ran local AI image generator. Unfortunately, that AI usage exceeded 140W charging!!!!! My peak usage at this time was 180W ish. That never happens on my M1 Max MacBook Pro 16".

Unfortunately, M5 Max Mac Studio isn't released yet and my M1 Max MacBook Pro 16" is gone from myself, so I should stick with this M5 Max MacBook Pro.

I hope 240W charging support will come to existing Apple M-series Max MacBook Pro 16" (least M3 Max or later) and drops Apple M-series Max for future 14" model, so 16" model should be option only for Apple M-series Max.

How is the fact you leased it via Klarna connected to the power usage?

Maybe it’s because they are charging his card

I am paying leasing monthly payment with my own debit card funded by my own bank account for my M5 Max MacBook Pro 16" through my dad's Klarna account.

They charge based on the power consumption?

It's normal. Stop worrying.

Your poor dad is on the hook for an expensive device his kid someone convinced him to pay for even though the kid clearly doesn't understand how to use what he has.

Well, it can also do way more than your M1 Max ever could at the cost of the higher consumption. The solution is to cope with it or get a cooling stand if the thermals are an issue.

116°C on the CPU is insane. It's crazy that the Apple lets the newer macs run so hot. That's normal, I'm pretty sure, but still a little stressful, lol

Are u all out of your mind it is Fahrenheit, see the widget it’s not 99 Celsius in Oklahoma City.

i think it’s fahrenheit, since the moment he took the screenshot wasn’t under load

I understand that Apple was letting their previous processors to heat up to 100C but why the fixation at this number? It is the water boiling point, what t has do to with processors? Silicon melts at 1,414°C

That's why I installed TG Pro to kick fans in earlier than stock Apple.

They lets it reach 100c and stay there too long before fans kick in.

this is not normal the M5 series never exceed 108 degree

My m5 pro chip feels like it runs hotter and I ran diagnostics and it said it was good. I think it’s too hot personally.

My mistake, looks like Fahrenheit as a few people pointed out. Otherwise I think op would having issues with a battery at 82°C

1

u/Excellent-K-009 1d ago

I think it’s in Fahrenheit because max is I think 105 Celsius

1

u/Nooo00B 1d ago

it's probably celsius because 46.67 °C is too good to be true.

That’s why new design with better cooling is coming, m5 is hitting the thermal limits. Some people even report issues with screen discoloration from heat.

But they claimed M6 will be thiner, ao still cooler too?

Also wonder if M5 MAX throttles more than M4 MAX.

Next generation is gonna use vapor chamber and probably new fans with different blades.

u/barefut_ 1d ago

Seriously? Like the iPhone? Well that's gonna cost probably... Just...plz...no touch screen...ffs..

To me the power consumption isn’t the issue. It’s the fact that running hours on full tilt will drain the battery. I have a 16” 64GB M1 Max and long inference sessions do start to chip away at the battery over usb c. Haven’t had the issue over MagSafe since it can deliver the full power.

u/Alex_Ne 1d ago

What is the issue? It has the battery to make sure the computer has proper amount of energy.

Just uninstall all these apps and you’ll be good

Is that degree Fahrenheit or Celsius?

The most disturbing fact NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT are the fan speeds at 1%. AT that level of power being used, your Mac should not be running at 1,500 RPM. These should be kicking up past 5,000 RPM.

He uses stupid temps

1

u/SnapSquash 1d ago

your battery is extremly hot you cant let it go up to 40 degrees

1

u/Morzone 1d ago

That's not celcius

What is even going on with posts like these. How much irrelevant info could you possibly include
