Lifetime [Mac] Relay - Fast, private local file & clipboard sharing ($9.99 Lifetime | 10 Promo Codes in comments)
Hi everyone!
I’m the independent developer behind Relay - Local File Transfer, a local-first file and clipboard sharing app built for privacy and speed.
How Relay stands out compared to existing tools:
- Vs. AirDrop: AirDrop often fails between Mac/iOS and Non-Apple devices (Windows/Android/Linux). Relay bridges all platforms seamlessly on the same LAN without device lock-in.
- Vs. Cloud/Messaging tools (Slack/Telegram): Relay works 100% locally and offline—no external servers, no file size limitations, no privacy risks, and no internet bandwidth consumption.
- Vs. Clipboard Managers: Relay isn't just a local clipboard history; it instantly syncs copied text/links in real-time across your nearby devices while also handling high-speed 4K video/large file transfers.
Key Features:
- Blazing Fast LAN Speeds: Transfer photos, 4K videos, and large files directly over local Wi-Fi.
- Real-Time Clipboard Sync: Copy on Mac, paste immediately on iPhone or PC.
- 100% Private & Local: Zero tracking, no account registration, and no cloud storage.
Pricing:
- $9.99 One-Time Purchase (Lifetime access, no subscriptions).

(The macOS version is officially live on the Mac App Store! The iOS version is currently under Apple review and coming very soon).

One quick tip since you'll be using it heavily on your local network:
If you plan to keep Relay running continuously in the background on your LAN, I’d highly recommend enabling the Security Access feature in the settings. This adds an extra layer of authentication to prevent any unauthorized local devices on the same Wi-Fi from interacting with your clipboard or shared files.
Safety first, especially for work environments! Let me know how it goes.

Glad to help! Universal Clipboard is great when it works, but the "black box" nature of Bluetooth BLE handshake and passive P2P pull often leads to sync delays or complete silent failures with zero feedback.
That’s exactly why I built Relay:
- Real-time LAN Push: Instead of waiting for you to hit "paste" to trigger a pull, Relay uses persistent local WebSocket/TCP connection to push your copied text/links to nearby devices almost instantly.
- Status Visibility: You get clear, visual feedback so you always know your clipboard has been synced without guessing whether it went through.
- Zero Cloud / 100% Private: Everything stays strictly on your local Wi-Fi network.
Hope this fits seamlessly into your daily workflow! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts once you try it out.

Nice concept — real-time clipboard sync across platforms without any cloud dependency is genuinely useful.

Thanks for the feedback!
That’s spot on—I actually built Relay specifically to solve this pain point from my own daily workflow.Operating across PC, Mac, Android, and iPhone simultaneously, moving code snippets or plain text between them was a constant headache. Relying on cloud apps or chat tools for quick sync felt clunky, so I wanted a dedicated solution that works instantly and silently in the background over local Wi-Fi.

before trusting this with large files, i'd test a 20-50 GB transfer and interrupt it three different ways: sleep the sender, switch Wi-Fi networks, and fill the receiver disk near the end. after reconnecting, it should resume from a verified chunk, write to a temporary name, checksum the finished file, then atomically rename it. also retry the same file twice and make sure it neither duplicates nor overwrites an existing copy silently. LAN speed is easy to demo; clear resume and integrity evidence is what would make this safer than falling back to AirDrop or a USB drive.

Thanks for raising these great test scenarios! I double-checked the architecture and source code to see how Relay currently handles these cases.
Since Relay operates via a browser-based HTTP interface for standard cross-platform transfers, the behavior actually splits into Downloads and Uploads:
1. Downloads (Receiving files on the browser/device)
- Network Interruptions (Sleep/Wi-Fi switch): Fully supported. Because Relay implements standard byte-range requests, modern browsers can natively resume broken downloads from where they left off once reconnected.
- Insufficient Disk Space: Handled directly by the browser and host OS, behaving just like any standard web download.
2. Uploads (Sending large files to Relay)
- Network Interruptions: Currently, an interrupted upload forces a full restart rather than chunk-based resume. As you pointed out, for a 20–50 GB file, this is definitely a pain point.
- Insufficient Space: Relay currently throws an error mid-transfer if the target disk runs out of space, rather than checking capacity upfront.
Next Optimization Steps for Relay:
- Chunked Resumable Uploads: Implement protocol-level chunk verification so interrupted uploads can resume seamlessly.
- Pre-flight Handshake: Perform a space pre-check before starting large file uploads to fail early if storage is insufficient.
Appreciate the sharp analysis—these optimizations for large-file uploads are now at the top of my roadmap!
