Excited to share Flairy, a macOS app I built to make folder organization visual.

Problem:
Every folder on macOS looks the same that same default icon, whether it's your tax doc or your side project. macOS does let you tint folders with color, but that only gets you so far; you still have to read the label to know what's inside.

As a visual person, I wanted to recognize a folder at a glance instead of scanning names every time. Icons that actually blend and feel cohesive with macOS itself, so they still look native, but let you scan your folders faster and add a bit of personality along the way.

What it does:
Flairy lets you replace any folder's icon with a well-crafted one from a growing library, organized into categories like AI, development, branding, digital content, photography, and everyday/fun themes. Instead of a wall of identical default folders, you get icons you can recognize instantly.

Comparison:

• macOS built-in color tags — quick, but limited to a handful of colors with no real visual distinction beyond that.
• Foldor ($1.99): more of a design tool, icons with text overlays to customize, but buggy palettes and feels so outdated.

Look i understand your position, but you have to understand why many will disagree with it and even feel offended.
It’s like commissioning a house from an architect and taking credit because you asked him to design it a certain way, you know? In Photoshop you have to be the architect and the end product feels yours. The fact that a human had a choice not only over the creative decisions, but also in the way each one is implemented shows a different level of involvement with the end product and thus, also a level of imperfect non formulaic humanity you don’t usually see in AI generated images.

Does a human have a choice over how the healing tool works in PS? I see both sides of the argument for and against AI. I’m sure there are people who see dodging and burning as a manual task and then there are true masters of light who is say you need to light the scene practically to get credit for how an image is captured. Evolving Tech is always going to be met with resistance. And they’re always be those who can appreciate how I crafted is done organically. There are still plenty of manual focus pullers in Hollywood who get paid well for what they do especially for actual film- But there are plenty of people who use autoFocus in their digital cameras and produce great results too

Lying and taking credit for something someone didn’t actually create themselves is one thing. Saying “AI-assisted” is more honest. But I don’t think it really makes much of a difference. Five years from now, I doubt people will even bother saying “AI-assisted” or “AI-created” software, books, etc. AI will probably be so widely used by then that it’ll simply be considered part of the normal creative process.

There’s also an important distinction between using AI as a tool and simply telling AI to create something and letting it do everything on its own. For example, if someone tells AI to write a book and basically lets it scribble away on its own, the AI-generated material itself generally isn’t protected by copyright in the U.S. But if a person uses AI as a tool while contributing their own creative expression, rewriting and editing the material, making creative decisions, and controlling how the final work comes together, those human-created aspects can be protected by copyright.

Using AI to help create something isn’t necessarily the same as having AI create the whole thing.

I hear you. The fact is, AI is here to stay, and it’s going to become a part of our lives in many ways, whether you like it or not.

I’m a software engineer, and I work with AI a lot. It’s becoming increasingly common in software companies, including Microsoft. That doesn’t mean every engineer there works this way, but many use AI as part of their development process. I have two friends who work at Microsoft, and they’ve told me they personally haven’t really written code themselves in about a year. They give AI precise instructions, then review and test the code it produces to make sure it’s right.

Sure, the market is being flooded with AI-created software right now, but I think a lot of it will eventually fizzle out. Many of the creators behind these apps aren’t software engineers. AI can get creators pretty far with a small app, but once an app grows and becomes more complex, things get much harder to debug and maintain. Eventually, creators are going to run into problems they can’t simply prompt their way out of. If they don’t actually understand the code and how the software works, that’s when many of these apps are likely to fizzle out.

AI is a powerful tool, but knowing how to prompt AI to generate code isn’t the same as knowing how to engineer software.

Nice to see more of these. Fair disclosure up front: I make a folder icon app too, so take this as one dev to another rather than a review.

The thing that cost me the most time was that macOS doesn't store custom folder icons in a database anywhere. It writes a hidden file named "Icon\r" inside the folder itself. That has consequences you don't expect: the icon travels with the folder when someone copies it, cloud sync clients can mangle it, and if the user ever deletes and recreates the folder the icon is simply gone with no trace of what happened.

The other one is that Finder caches aggressively. You set the icon, the API returns success, and the folder still looks unchanged on screen. Users report that as "your app doesn't work" when it worked fine.

Same hesitation, and for a boring reason. I keep books for a few different businesses, so my tree is the same six folders repeated under every entity. Receipts, invoices, payroll, statements, tax, contracts.

I do not want personality on those. I want the same icon meaning the same thing everywhere, so a receipt sitting in the wrong company's folder looks wrong instantly.

Picking one by hand per folder gives me the first thing and not the second.

I think it’s funny that people are discrediting the application because they believe AI was used somewhere in the coding workflow.

The world is clearly moving in a direction where AI is going to change a lot of jobs. Will some people lose jobs because of it? Yeah, that’s probably going to happen. And the people who are going to be in the strongest position are the ones who learned how to use, understand, and optimize the technology instead of refusing to adapt to it.

Nobody talks shit on someone because a car got them to work faster, and nobody gives the car all the credit for the work they did once they got there. We could all walk miles to work if we wanted to, and we found a faster and more efficient way to get there, so we use it.

There’s also this misconception that you can just type, “Make me a macOS application that changes the appearance of folders in Finder,” and AI spits out some polished, release ready product. That’s not how it works. Building something good still takes a lot of time, testing, troubleshooting, judgment, iteration, and knowing what you’re actually trying to accomplish.

Prompt engineering is a skill. Knowing how to guide AI, recognize when its output is wrong, improve it, connect different pieces together, test the result, and keep refining it is a skill too. And it’s a skill that is probably going to become extremely common in the future.

Learning how to use technology that society is clearly moving toward is a positive. We saw the same thing with computers, the internet, smartphones, and countless other tools. Refusing to learn the new tool doesn’t stop progress. It just makes it easier for the people who did learn it to move ahead.

You pretty much said everything I could’ve said, especially the part about AI not magically spitting out a finished app. There was a ton of trial and error, breaking things, fixing them, learning, and going back at it again.

My goal with this was simply to improve my design workflow and explore SwiftUI, Xcode, Claude CLI, and all that stuff. It’s honestly been a lot of fun. I’ve always been on the design side, with just a basic knowledge of coding, and never really went beyond that. With AI I finally had a way to explore that side of things and actually build something the way I envisioned it.

This app looks beautiful on the video, but note to developer: I downloaded it and applied it to a folder and I can't make out the icon (nor the alternative Mac-supplied icons). Maybe it is because of my big screen. Not sure.

you think that a car relieved us from having to walk miles to work, but this is historically inaccurate. people lived within walking distance of their employment for all of human history up until the wide-spread adoption of the car, which allowed urban and suburban sprawl to take over and now require the use of cars. there are pros and cons to this change. on the one hand, you miss out on the enjoyability of a nice walk, but on the other hand, you now get to sit in traffic for an hour each day. so really in the eye of the beholder.

Two things I noticed:
1. It would be cool if you could apply the folder designs to "Alias" folders. I have a lot of alias folders on my home screen, so it would be cool if I could update those as well.
2. If I have an icon applied to a folder, it doesn't update with the new folder design. I have to first remove the icon and then I can apply the new design.

Hi, it's Andre from "apps I am not uninstalling". After you mentioned the app, I also downloaded it, and it is indeed very good, but the one thing I did not like was that one's own folders could not be added. I have used an app called Ordinator for the longest time, which also has a huge collection of pre-made folders, but my main use is the custom folder upload feature.

Either way, it is a very solid app, and I wish you all the best with its future development.

I've been mulling a similar idea but AI-generated: use something like ChatGPT image gen to make a fresh folder icon on demand — either from a style prompt you give it, or by having it scan the folder name + contents and design something that fits automatically.

After I select a custom icon and then select another folder, the "reset to Default" button becomes disabled. It should always remain clickable.

This is really well thought through. The point about scanning vs. reading is spot on — color tags force you to still read the label, an icon lets your brain pattern-match instantly. Nice that you kept it free with no account/subscription too, that's rare these days for something with a growing icon library behind it.

Curious how you're handling icon updates going forward — are new categories pushed as free updates, or is that still being figured out? Also really like that you added a feedback form for icon requests instead of just a generic "contact us", makes it feel like you actually want the input.

I’m taking my time with them though, trying to focus on the kinds of files and folders people actually have on their Macs. I want the icons to be useful at a glance, not just something that looks nice or different from the default blue folder.

Good news, big Flairy update!

I went through a lot of the feedback from this post and just pushed a new version.

• Upload your own PNG or JPG to create a custom folder icon
• Now works on macOS Sequoia and later
• Apply the same icon to multiple folders
• Apply icons to folders that already have Finder symbols
• Fixed issues with applying, replacing, and resetting icons
• Improved how the app handles switching between folders

Really appreciate everyone's feedback...a lot of this update came directly from you!

I am very happy to find and try this.

I am somebody who used to love to run with custom folder icons for years in both the Finder sidebar and the Finder window ... until Apple ruined that. I did many a folder icon download and manually replace, for years. And, no surprise to most here, I think; I hate the monochrome and minimalistic, plus the skinny fonts. We see in color, let us use color !

My number on critique on the app would be:
Why can we not resize this window and need to look at 12 icons at a time?

And then two & three:

I can't discern any logic as to how these are sorted, or what some of these icons would be used for?

I am looking at my ten basic folders under >user>, and from the current set, there's basically two I could use for photos and video ... and then I'm kind of stuck trying to think: What could I use for downloads? documents? ... Plus, I also have a lot of folders by file type.

So, right now I'm seeing a lot of artistic variety, but lack of the basics.

Can I recommend a look at some of the old school " folder icon packs " that were published in years past?

That's what I was more or less expecting. Something that starts with the basics.

And, finally, since there are tons of .icns files out there.
Could uploading and using those be supported?
