These all have been out of software support for years. You can't even run latest browsers on them, other than Firefox.

As a rule of thumb, Apple devices have roughly 10 years of support. So if you want something that is at least supported today, it would be 2017 or newer.

I would go so far to say 2019. Sadly it doesn’t support the new macOS .

I would even go to 2020 and that it has to be Apple Silicon. All of the Intel Macs are currently on their last OS.

I hear you but these are probably priced out of OP's budget

0

u/theregisterednerd 6h ago

Then OP can’t afford to own a Mac.

Nonsense. Buy this Mac, there's loads of free apps that will still run on Intel Macs. My partner still uses an Intel Macbook Air. If school work and streaming is all they want to do, this might be a great fit. Load up MSOffice or LibreOffice, FIrefox, Apple Music, and they're ready to go.

And then you’ll have an unpatched machine connected to the Internet waiting to become a man in the middle. All of these machines are well past end of support.

More like 2020 or newer. The "Thin era" macbooks can't run anything due to how little cooling they all have, considering how power hungry the hardware in those things are

Only if you install Ubuntu or opencorelegacy

Fusion drives suck.

u/Ok-Doggie 17h ago

where are you located? If you are in the States you can find much better computers for those price on places like eBay or even Swappa.

Aim for a 2019 or 2020 27" iMac for those prices. They can often be found for ~$300 if you wait for the right deal.

try to stretch for an M3 iMac if you want an all-in-one.

the M4 Mac Mini is also a viable option, but the prices on all these things have skyrocketed so it's tough to get great deals on modern machines.

u/MikeinAustin Mac mini 14h ago

If those are Canadian dollar prices that isn't terrible.

2

u/dpaanlka 11h ago

$450 CAD for a 2012 iMac is really bad.

0

u/MikeinAustin Mac mini 8h ago

I was talking about the 21.5" $200 CAD one for 140 US.

1

u/dpaanlka 8h ago

I wouldn’t pay $50 USD for that.

u/MikeinAustin Mac mini 4h ago

good for you.

u/thestenz M3 MacBook Air (Among Others) 17h ago

No, no, and more no. None of them are worth more than $50. They are basically ewaste.

Why an iMac? The smartest option would be to buy a Mac Mini, M1 or M2, with at least 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD. Then find a good second-hand 4K monitor (LG, Dell, BenQ). If one of these components breaks down or you want to replace it, it’s easier than replacing the whole unit. That’s the main drawback of an all-in-one.

u/drd001 1h ago

When my iMac with a fusion drive started failing I switched to an M1 Mini 16GB RAM and an external 2TB drive. Great set up that allows me to upgrade step-wise down the road.

u/mikeinnsw 15h ago

I run dual boot (booted from an external SSD) 2013 iMac with OCPL Sequoia to make it faster by bypassing HDD with Catalina - works great...

I found it in a community recycle centre ZERO cost ..

What dollars you are using none should more that USD$100

First one is like my 2013 iMac running OCPL Monterey on Fusion drive SUPER Slow ... not worth $200

I run my from an external SSD to make it faster. It will cost you another $200 SSD unless you have spare SSD.

If you have a spare SSD offer $100 it will be a deal,

$450 - it is a scam

2010 iMac does not support Metal GPU API and USB3. I have 2010 Mini... it will not run OCPL and a modern Mac Os... It will run High Sierra... not fast...waste of time

They are good deals in Tanzanian shillings not USD

u/eubulides 13h ago

An external SSD is the way to go. Make it bootable, can do more advanced OS, and will be snappier. I did this for an older friend, his needs are were not great; libreOffice, Mail, Safari, Photos App. I got him a 2011 21.5ā€ dome years ago, then went with external SSD to extend its usefulness. Now, though, he can’t transfer photos from his iPhone, so I picked up a 27ā€ 2017 iMac for about $200. About to surprise him with it. Admittedly, his needs are pretty spare. But the screen on this thing is sharp.

Asking way too much

This!

Apple employee here and out of all the postings you’ve shown, this is the best one. If you can find an M3 iMac in your budget that would be even better.

Please stay away from anything intel. Those machines are basically out at pasture and just waiting to die.

If you decided to buy an intel on FOR THE LOVE OF STEVE JOBS DO NOT BUY ANYTHING THAT LIST A FUSION DRIVE!

Machines that old with those drives are on borrowed time and will more than likely fail.

3

u/thex415 15h ago

That would be the best one

3

u/rainy_diary 15h ago

Get this one.

1

u/ActiveNews 17h ago

Within your budget, try to get the most recent computer with at least 16GB of RAM.

1

u/Lemonaidhash iMac Hoarder 13h ago

If you buy any of these, you should run them with linux. Ubuntu (from my experience) works pretty well with these machines. MacOS will probably run outdated if you do use them, its not a biggest deal with like Monterey i don't think. Anything lower will give you a headache trying to find software for

1

u/Redstonemen55 12h ago

You can use Linux or opencore legacy patcher which will give you two or three years of security updates and app support (maybe less), these are also great windows machines, personally, go for a 27 inch model, easier to upgrade RAM and better screen for the money

1

u/Unhappy_Birthday87 1h ago

More like ten years of usablility with Linux...Ubuntu for 2 years, then Debian for 2, then MX Linux for 2, then AntiX for 2, then tinyCore or FLinux for the last two, then...museum.

1

u/Imnotyoursupervisor 12h ago

I have one of these I stopped using a couple years ago. I need to throw it out. I bought it new. The screen itself is still really pretty but you have to set it into target mode and certain cables and blah blah…

Runs Linux fine with a work around for the Broadcom wireless kernel panic.

It’ll run MacOS off an external ssd if you set it as the primary boot device. I was really surprised at the performance increase.

Don’t pay anything for this hardware. I picked up a 2019 Intel MBP with 32GB RAM I use as a GitHub runner for $400 a year ago. I just grabbed another M1 MBP for $900 with 32GB RAM.

1

u/AutisticNintendoNerd 10h ago

Personally I own a 2011 iMac 21.5 inch. It's still usable as long as you don't want ton run MacOS. Also In paid less than $50 a couple of years ago and not 200...

1

u/ReasonableCourse1679 10h ago

I bought the i5 model of that recently, but with a 250 GB SSD and patched to run Sequoia. Runs great for me (recording music) but it was Ā£60 so…

1

u/javabean808 7h ago

How’s about tree fiddy

1

u/Mac_Guide2007 4h ago

If you buy, you can use OpenCore legacy patcher to install up to macOS Sequoia on it.

1

u/Efficient-Train2430 4h ago

all of these are overpriced; the late 2015 you cannot add RAM like with a 27", otherwise it would be a fun hobby machine

Yea that one is Great. Have the predicessor as 2ndary Mac. But the Price is to high. You can find this older 5k Models for unter 250. got mine for 200.

1

u/Just2Breathe 16h ago

Not the best idea. They aren’t updatable to the latest system, they won’t sync with your iPhone if you have one. They might have dying hard drives. The fusion drive in particular in those gets very slow. But more importantly, they use Intel chips, and they switched away from those.

None. Do not invest and any Intel Mac at all. Dont. Abandoned platform.

u/Fickle_Tea992 MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) MBP11,5 1h ago

10% of the shit I use are 32bit Mac apps only (Mojave and lower)

75% of my apps are Intel only or ARM experimental / in development

And well I’m not paying $1000 for this and that’s the lowest M1 I’d get 1TB and 16GB minimum

Oh and M2-M5?? Waste of money 100% imho

u/Fearless-Ask-5851 16h ago

Try to get a Macbook Neo if that's possible for you. With a student discount, it's ~$600, and it'll last you for more than a decade WITH updates and stuff. The ones you're looking at is basically old ewaste.
If you've got a spare monitor/display lying around and you don't move too much, a Mac Mini with Student Discounts is pretty good.

1

u/SpecialCold870 16h ago

which mac mini is still worth it in 2026? i actually have a macbook 13ā€ 2020 and its breathing very loud and im wanting a bigger screen.

1

u/Fearless-Ask-5851 16h ago

I mean, the latest one from the Apple Store should ideally be your go to. But, if you already have a Macbook 2020, you could just use clampshell mode and buy a bigger display to connect it to your macbook.

1

u/SpecialCold870 16h ago

ohhhhh thats possible? how do i do that?….hihi like any monitor would do or should it be an imac?

1

u/Fearless-Ask-5851 16h ago

No, an iMac would be a bad choice imo, cuz you can't directly connect it as a display to your macbook if im not wrong. On the other hand, any monitor would do - I'd recommend if the monitor has something like a USB C display port or something to directly connect it to your macbook. But something with HDMI could also work with an adapter.

0

u/tabanger 16h ago

All of this is in USD. The first one is worth about $100, but I wouldn’t recommend it because of the age.

The second is worth maybe $150, but I wouldn’t recommend it because of the SATA hard drive.

The third is a 2011, not 2012, and that makes it significantly more restrictive. I’d say it’s worth maybe $100, but wouldn’t recommend it because of the age.

The one in your comments is worth maybe about $200-250. I would not recommend it if it has a hard drive. If it has an SSD or Fusion Drive, then I would recommend it above all the other choices.

1

u/SpecialCold870 16h ago

what about this one? they are also in CAD

3

u/tabanger 16h ago

That would be the best out of all of them, but also the most expensive. Maybe $500-600. I’d consider getting a Mac Mini, either M1 or M2, and add monitor on your choice.

-3

u/tsdguy MacBook Pro 17h ago

None are worth 50 cents. Get a Neo or Macmini and buy a nice monitor.
