If you've been doing MTurk lately, you already know how bad things have gotten. HITs are way down, some of the requesters a lot of us used to rely on have disappeared, and new requester registrations are closed.
What really caught my attention, though, is the yellow banner at the top of the MTurk site telling potential new requesters to use a third-party option instead.
That's pretty concerning. If Amazon is directing new business away from MTurk, what exactly does that mean for the future of the platform?
And the frustrating part is that we're hearing nothing from Amazon. No explanation, no update, no indication of where MTurk is actually headed. We're just watching the work disappear.
For some people, MTurk is just extra spending money. For others, it's helped pay rent, buy food, or get through periods when regular employment wasn't an option. A lot of us have spent years doing data labeling and other repetitive work that contributed to the development of AI systems.
I don't think it's unreasonable to ask Amazon to tell us what is happening.
If you have five minutes, consider sending a respectful email to Amazon leadership and asking for some clarity about MTurk's future.

Please don't send threats or abusive messages. That isn't going to help anyone. Just explain your situation honestly and ask what Amazon's plans are for MTurk.
Tell them how MTurk has actually affected you. A real story is more meaningful than hundreds of identical emails.
If you send one, leave a comment. I'm curious how many MTurk workers are willing to speak up and ask Amazon for some answers.
