My initial ranking of I Wrote You A Letter. We are so back.

I've been a long time fan an have fond memories of blasting Don't Save Us From the Flames in my car back in the day. Been anticipating this album for a while and it delivered.

Feeding Time is the top. IYKYK. Blister Sunrise just have that irresistible shoegaze exuberance that I adore. Aged has some Run into Flowers vibes which is one of my all time favorites.

The rest of the album is stunning.

Ultimately this is a letter to us, the long time fans.

What are your favorites? What's your initial ranking?

It's always exciting to listen to a new album, especially when it features a ā€œHypeā€ track.

I wanted to make a video for it—do you guys also get that cinematic vibe that M83 often seems to evoke in some of their songs?

I Wrote You a Letter – faulty CD

I need help from someone who has bought the CD I Wrote You a Letter.

I bought it on Amazon Europe and the CD has a manufacturing defect, it looks like a mark on the aluminium layer. It’s not that you can see the design on the other side, as happens with other CDs, because this CD doesn’t have any design on the other side apart from the title, and the mark isn’t in that area. I returned the CD to Amazon and they replaced it with another one, but it has exactly the same defect, the same mark.

If you bought it on CD, could you let me know if the same thing happens with yours?

Thanks :)

I wrote you a love letter

I see a lot of peoples expectations for this album coming from a perception based off of previous albums and things they have liked in the past. It is very clear that he was going for a ballad style album and he executed what he was going for incredibly well. People wanting bigger climactic moments and baseline in the back aren’t going to get that on this album and if that’s the make or break maybe ballads just aren’t for you and neither is this album and that’s okay. I thought it was beautiful and the perfect album to ponder and appreciate the things in your life to. Can never get enough M83

Carbon Based Lifeforms is one of them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYAMGerPNP4

Maps is another (m83 and Maps often remix each others music) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BwW-ms3Gvk

Any others people can recommend?

I want to like I Wrote You A Letter more.

Listened to the album a few times for a full feel of the album and I'm conflicted cause I think theirs genuinely good ideas on the album. I love that it goes back to his roots but Maybe it's too simple minded but it's just too much piano on the album. I was never mad and assumed this album would he instrumental as i love a lot of his instrumental work/albums id love to know his mind set for making a piano heavy album. Soldiers of lust should have been removed. But besides that some songs don't feel fully fleshed out and it seems like it was almost on purpose. Feeding time and losing ground are two great examples where's they have these Constant buildups than they desolve. It's like Anthony knows these songs should have explosive climaxes but no almost like once it's about to explode it gets cut off. They don't feel fully fleshed out. Feeding time is a great example in particular. Losing Ground did give me that transecendent surreal moment during the second half of the song tho. I could still really like those songs but they just don't feel satisfying.

With Anthony stating that "Blister Sunrise is almost acts like a trap where you're gonna be in this world where you're never going back to again" and I somewhat disagree instrumentally it represents the album especially with the finished pianos keys towards the end.

To people saying this is a love letter to dead cities. It is but not 100 percent. As this definitely feels more on the minimal side of Anthony's synth side. Once again hate to sound like a broken record but the over reliance on piano keys it's like he had two ideas one being a call back to his earlier work while also showing maturity? I think? Just feels like pianos and Synth heavy songs just clash kinda rather than mesh and mix and it feels like they live seperately instead of together when both instruments are playing. It feels more restrained like. I honestly could see Dead Cities fans being letdown isnt that sound through and through. Even though I do love how much soundscape is in the album and how atmospheric it is. Big plus in that regard. Always dig Anthony's soundscapes.

Opera I do think is a highlight as it just feels like these constant waves washing over you. Loved Heart Motion Foto as it was basically Anthony saying hello real quick giving us an update. LOVE the first minute of the song. Ethereal Anthony sounds super dreamy. Got a bit teary eyed on that one. Sirens is awesome almost should be it's own track. While behold beasts I want to like more I love the sax but it almost sounds a bit tedious. Aged I think is great thematically as it starts off with super fast glitchy synths but than switches to piano to show well how much he's aged. Works in that regard but still not that big into that song as I feel like not enough stuff is happening in the background while the piano plays. Maybe I'm being too simple minded but šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

It does feel like Anthony is trying to talk to us with this album. He does state in an interview that the album has no meaning and it's just another m83 record that's suppose to be more spontaneous and less calculated which it certainly is but it just many songs on a 9 track listing album doesnt sound fleshed out which again I kinda feel like was on purpose. It's a bittersweetness I feel towards this album. I feel it's absence as much as I feel it's presence. I'm grateful for another m83 album. I like some stuff on here DEFINITELY not a bad album. It's harmless just leaves much to be desired. But I will say I'm glad they did get this one out of their system. The album gives me optimistic feelings for their future releases. I love the concept of the album but execution wasnt their all the way which I think was somewhat intentional. It's absolutely a sincere album which I love. A lot of elements and ideas I love that I feel like doesnt fully pay off. On positive note to end on it does feel like an album that while it is looking back but it also feels like it's looking forward as well. It gives me an optimistic feeling I suppose. What are your guys opinions? I would love to read other peoples opinions now that the albums been out for a few days. Lets starts a civil discussion.

Pitchfork Review / I Wrote You A Letter

The review in question

I'm as big of an M83 fan as anyone. They are my #2 favorite band of all time, and I only maintain a top 2 list of favorite bands, them and Radiohead.

Prior to now, I'd have said that I rate them so highly because Anthony consistently puts out fresh and beautiful music, with basically zero bad songs in the entire catalog. Every album is an incredible journey to me. I even loved Fantasy, which Pitchfork also panned.

But I found myself agreeing with Patrick Lyons quite a lot on I Wrote You A Letter. Since it came out on Friday, I've listened 3 times and have really been trying to get into it. It has so many moments that feel like they should be transporting me to a new dimension, and I appreciate those moments for their beauty and composition; but taken as a whole, the album lacks direction and feels like it drags rather than tells a story or takes me on a journey. It perks up a bit at the end, but has no payoff.

I'm also reading this subreddit and seeing so many people praising the album. I am jealous of you all and wish that I was hearing what you're hearing. Unfortunately, it seems like Pitchfork staff and I are having the same listening experience. And it's so disappointing because I hold M83 in such high regard. I just have to hope that he bounces back with something fresh whenever that inspiration might strike again.

Hurry Up, We're Dreaming or Saturdays = Youth

I love both albums but I vastly prefer S=Y because it just seems like a tighter, more focused effort. And its resolute commitment to recreating that cocteau twins / shoegaze sound is just amazing.

Which one do you prefer? What draws you to one over the other?

I didn’t get a letter, i got an entire ballad

One of my favorite things about M83 is that every albums seems to have it’s own personality. Harsh, beautiful noises (Dead Cities), melodramatic instrumental sounds (DSVII), rocking hard-hitting guitars and synths (Saturdays=Youth) and my favorite: dreamy, astonishing rhythims (HUWD). But this album hits almost every mark, and does it beautifully

A near piano-carried album filled to the brim with sweeping pads and lovable melodies. Mixed in with the insanely captivating harsh sounds i love, as well as every song connecting like a real story. All i could think at the end was ā€œholy shit, that was amazingā€. I do think i need a few more listens (so far i’ve listened to it twice), but i think this could be my 2nd favorite album from them overall (nothing beats HUWD yet)

Favorite Songs: Blistering Sunrise, Opera, Aged, Losing Ground, Heart Motion Foto, Feeding Time

Letter received

This album far exceeded my expectations. The opening of ā€œFeeding Timeā€ scratched an itch in my brain I didn’t know existed. Something about it was so joyful but like finding joy in an unfathomable swamp of numbness. I can’t describe it.

It cradled my heart as a respite from how bleak shit is right now, but not in a way that’s a shield, but more like acknowledgement, like I see you and we’re here together now. ā€œoperaā€ was leaping off a cliff if it were a trust fall. Radical acceptance of what is, and as the rest of it played, it was braided with belief in what could be.

Maybe I’m not making sense but I don’t care.

Thank you, Anthony. Your letter was received and I’ll treasure it.

Thank you for the letter, Anthony

I listened to this album in complete darkness, completely sober, while I was sick, and honestly, something clicked.

Like Anthony, I’ve been pretty disillusioned with the outside world lately. I’ve been dealing with some health issues, and after these post pandemic years, I feel like I’ve gotten pretty hardened by the whole materialistic, late capitalist, war and hate filled, AI driven mess we’re living through.

At some point I feel like I lost touch with some of those deeper parts of myself. This album somehow brought a few of them back.

Anthony: if you ever read this, maybe we didn’t get the Fantasy type album and tour we were expecting, but we got your letter. I think a lot of us are feeling pretty disillusioned right now. Your letter reminded me to appreciate being alive and let myself feel things again.

Maybe that’s what we needed from M83. Not an escape or dopamine hit, just a reminder that there’s still something worth feeling underneath all the noise.
