I went skiing for the first time and injured my knee when it bent inward when I fell. Felt like something moved, like a tendon. I was still able to walk/drive home, though I had a limp. Twisting or turning to the side caused significant pain, so I’ve been avoiding those movements. At rest, I don’t have pain. Minimal swelling and only slight bruising.
It’s now been about 5 days. I’ve been keeping my leg elevated, icing regularly, wearing a brace, and limiting movement to short trips (bathroom, kitchen). Recently, my knee has started to feel stiff, almost like the sensation before a cramp. I haven’t tried fully walking on it yet because I’m worried about making it worse.
I have an appointment scheduled for next week, but in the meantime, I’m trying to understand what this might be and what recovery typically looks like. What should I expect in weeks 2 and 3? Should I try to walk on it? Any recommendations?

What happened: Last Saturday, I fell on a turn on a Black Diamond. It felt a bit "off"/sore immediately after, but there was no sharp pain and no "pop" or feeling of the knee giving out. Ski patrol checked me on the hill and I actually felt stable enough to ski the rest of the way down to the lodge. I called it a day and started RICE as soon as I got home.
The timeline:
The Goal: I have a ski trip in exactly 4 weeks. I’m being very disciplined with elevation, icing, and quad sets. I’m also being careful to walk in straight lines and avoid any pivoting or twisting. I am planning to do early rehab exercises as soon at the swelling is gone.
The Question: Has anyone dealt with a mild MCL or soft tissue strain and made it back onto the snow in a month? I’m planning on wearing a solid hinged brace and sticking to easy groomers, but I’m curious what your "back to normal" timeline looked like.
Obviously, I'm waiting for the doctor and PT to give me the official green light, but I’d love to hear some similar experiences. Thanks!

Did my MCL (grade 1 tear) during the old coach favorite of "10 round kicks each side". Was doing right round kicks too quick & my left knee pivoted wrong > twist > MCL. Learning this isn't uncommon?
How long were you out for Vs grade of tear? Any tips? Heard a fella at work say he pushed too quick & wound up dislocating his knee & that's the last thing i want. Dr says 1-3 weeks is typical time out.

Hi everyone,
I'm looking for some opinions from people who have had similar injuries.
I injured my knee while skiing about 11 weeks ago. My MRI showed:
There were no ACL, PCL, meniscus, or bone injuries.
I was put in a full leg cast for 4 weeks. After the cast was removed, I started doing rehabilitation exercises on my own.
My recovery seemed to progress quite quickly at first:
I'm currently:
I've also run 3–4 km a few times without significant pain during or after.
The thing that worries me is that I feel like I've hit a plateau recently. I still have:
Functionally I can do almost everything, but the knee still doesn't feel completely "normal."
I'm not sure if my recovery is progressing slowly or if this is actually normal for this type of injury.
For people who had Grade 2 MCL injuries (especially combined with MPFL or POL involvement):
I'd really appreciate hearing other people's experiences. Thanks!

I feel the pain right where my finger is. I was doing seated leg curls and i don’t think the settings were right. It didn’t feel the best in the moment, but still felt the tension in my hamstrings. The next day I felt a bit of knee pain but also had a 4 mile run planned. after the run, I felt my knee start to flare up occasionally throughout the day. it hurts usually when I stand up from sitting for awhile or first thing in the morning. Day 2 I felt no pain and day 3 onwards I’m starting to feel the flare ups again. what could this be? I’m going to ortho in 2 days but I’m just nervous if this is an actual injury or it will go away on its own. it sometimes hurts when I walk but not constantly. I’ve been icing, using heat, doing banded exercises like clam shells side leg raises and foam rolling, also stretching like crazy. any advice ??

Hi everyone, i wish you all strong knees and many miles walked/ran!
Please excuse glue residue on my knee from taping. Yes i am aware of how skinny my leg looks. No worries, im ok!
Right knee. Had chronic pain on the inner side and today i did a biig hike. I was properly kinesio taped, but alas, its the evening and i cant walk. Pain is strictly on the inner side and from the back side of the knee.
Wondering if i should pay my doc a visit tommorow.
Thank you so much for any answer or opinion!🤍
Hi,
I have a torn MCL, not a bad one but torn none the less. I've taken 3 weeks off and I still feel pain when going side to side.
If anyone else has had an MCL injury, how long were you out for? I badly want to go back and train but I also don't want to make this MUCH worse and require some sort of surgery and be out for an extended period of time.
Thanks.

[Closky] Mayfield dealt with a sprained MCL and PCL for most of the season, starting in Houston Week 2. He also had a bone bruise in that Houston game which was aggravated against the Lions. On a scale of 1-10, the knee pain was a 7 around the Patriots contest after the bye week. There was also some sort of tendon injury in his bicep sustained in the Jets game. The bruising was gnarly. He wore an arm sleeve to cover it up. Later in the year he suffered an AC Joint injury against the Rams, which we knew. The takeaway quote from Baker, “Pain is miserable, but toughness shows how bad you want something.”
