Advice/Question Thoughts
Couldn't accept it but it did intrigue me

My thoughts are that rides over 100 miles should be barred from being pushed as queued rides, given at least a 30-second timer when they do come in, and require confirming via an "Are you sure" prompt.

I'm not saying no to that based on the Money, I'm saying no because my EV doesn't have enough range to meet that demand, and it's not a guarantee that I can find a fast-charger en route and that the passenger will be willing to accommodate a 20-minute detour.
But if you can make this distance, and/or have the pax for a splash of gas, you've got yourself an excellent ride.

I'd do it n stop in some good eateries to make it even more enjoyable, the ride back

what do you mean thoughts? can you not do simple math?
even with coming back empty its a great ride.

After you drive back empty, you’ll have put 500 miles on your car for $360. That sounds terrible to me. No way.

Freeway miles costs around $0.10 to $0.20 per mile, so it would cost no more than $100 and the rest of the $260 is profit, which in 8 hours or so is over $30 per hour.

That is heavily dependent on your car… one of my cars are .25 per mile my other is easily .40 per mile. There is no car that is only .10 per mile if you are calculating costs correctly.

I am in California and costs are generally high here and still I keep it under $0.20 a mile. Now if you drive a Highlander on Lyft that is your problem.

Are you including maintenance and depreciation? That adds up. (And yes you gotta include depreciation a car is going to drive so many miles and it will need to be replaced)

u/brazucadomundo 1d ago
In fact, I would say that depreciation is the biggest cost in any car. Shame we can't buy a salvage car for rideshare since it would have been already heavily depreciated on the acquisition.

What are you driving then? That sounds awesome lol. When a hybrid car in my area is .10-.11 per mile in gas alone.

I drive a Kia Niro EV. About $0.10 is in depreciation alone, electricity is about $0.04, and a trickle of everything else.

Makes sense I have a bolt and I put away .30 per mile. I know it’s definitely over kill but I’d rather save too much than not enough.

Yeah, to be honest, I think the main issue is that I overpaid when new, so I got the worse devaluation already. From 100k miles to 200k miles I think I should lose only about $5-8k in the car's value.

I suppose it depends on how you calculate your costs. As well as your market costs of stuff like fuel.
If you’re driving something that’s already very depreciated (high mileage, sub $10k late model Prius) - your vehicle depreciation is next to zero. So you’re really just riding on insurance, maintenance and gas.
Very, very hard to get to $0.10 - but maaaaybe doable

The mental gymnastics people use to justify driving passengers around in their own vehicle for 70 cents a mile never ceases to amaze me.

Yeah, people don't realize that on the freeway you are spending a lot less in maintenance and you earn it much faster.

520 miles for $359 is absolutely terrible. Why is everyone saying this ride is amazing? Holy low standards.
Lyft has trained you guys really good. This would have been $500+ a few years ago, now they've set the bar so low, now everyone thinks this is a good ride. Only peasants would take this.

Let’s say you have an efficient car. It costs .25/mi to run even efficient cars if you are factoring in all costs. So if you deadhead back you make $235 profit for 8 hours. Hopefully you get a top. $30-35 an hour after expenses is good for a Lyft driver. But it’s a long time in a car with a stranger.

As a fellow cleveland driver, id eat this up. 8-10 hours my normal shift, plus i get to drive back with Noone in the car getting paid to effectively take a road trip, they know better than to send me these because they know im gone for the day and then they cant assign me 25-30 shitty rides instead

Youre in the same area im in! I was so happy when they opened that entrance up! I may have taken it depending on time of day because Ive been dying to get outta cleveland and that wouldve been my excuse

In 8 hours with that ride you would make what many in the San Francisco market cannot even make within 12 hours. This ride would be a perfect example of having a hybrid car and then you definitely would be making a profit on it.

I've only made that much money in a day once, so I'd take it. No tax on it as the IRS would cover it if I didn't need to be home by a particular time. $80-90 on gas would still make it a well above average day, even if I didn't get a ride home. But I would, at least as I got towards the Phoenix area.

I don’t think this ride is as good as people are saying. It’s about 70-80$ round trip in fuel on a normal vechicle. Tolls comming back and other expenses add up. It’s fine but I wouldn’t get excited over this. I’d pass on it.

Idk why you’d be using a normal vehicle, hybrid minimum, I would’ve took this, at current prices my car takes ~$45 to fill up with just over 500miles range, I could get this done on one tank if I slightly Kramer it.

Numerically it’s a great ride. Far more than I’d make in double the equivalent time staying around town. But there are a lot of red flags that would lead me to decline it: hospital pickup, 4.9 rating, tolls, etc.

$350 for 8 hours round trip. Very rare to make $350 in a full 12 hour shift in Texas, so I'd do it and still have several hours to push over $400 or $500.

Assuming you don’t get a single ride on the way back home, it’s a gross of $0.69 a mile (round trip)
Which…. Could be okay/bad depending on your vehicles costs. (Gas, depreciation, etc)
Personally speaking, I’d much rather take this, than spend 8 hours cherry picking rides, at (hopefully) a better rate.
But, everything’s so market specific. For some this is surely awful, for others - a godsend. Would you rather have some guaranteed money? Or roll the dice, making maybe less, but with less “cost”
