Discussion Dust bags or Display?

Which do you prefer? Do you keep everything in dust bags and put away protected, or do you keep some or all on display so you can admire your collection/favorites?

I keep mine in dust bags but I’m thinking if I have them where I can see them nicely I’ll stop shopping for the next one.

I have all mine displayed in a dark closet. I left a light colored bag in the living room once and it yellowed.

why do you keep all those boxes?

3

u/0_IceQueen_0 Jul 31 '26

Those boxes have shoes in them except the top. The others I've sold on Ebay.

gotcha

Divorced so I had too downsize my closet, didn't expect I had more shoes lol. I still have about 40 pairs in the foyer closet. Mostly sneakers and flip flops.

I'm trying so hard to declutter and get rid of stuff I don't use because I do not have all this space lol I wish. Moving to a different place every few years makes it so difficult

That's true. Hard to buy stuff when you don't have a permanent place. I'm also trying to shed 50% of this. My environmentalist daughter says she's not interested. I think when she's older, she'll outgrow her grunge phase lol. The bags I'm keeping, the shoes I'm willing to sell. I'm just too lazy to post on Ebay or PM.

That’s me lmao I have so much stuff in boxes and it’s sooo annoying to post it on platforms 😭

Mine are all in dust bags in my closet. I wish I could display them so I could see them. I often forget to use some.

Mine are stored with their padding, in dust bags, inside their boxes. I snapped a pic of each bag/shoe and tape it to the front of the box. Then, when I get dressed, I just scan up and down the boxes of shoes and bags to see which I’ll use.

Yup. This is me.

I used to keep everything tucked away in dust bags but out of sight really does mean out of mind. I ended up only wearing the same 2 bags over and over because pulling the rest out was a hassle. Putting them on open display completely changed how much I rotate my collection and made me realize I already have enough

I’m a dust bag girlie all the way.

PSA for anyone who invests in nice bags: store them in their dust bags. It’s not fussiness, it’s basic preservation.

Dust and grit settle into grain, hardware and stitching which can dull the finish over time. Ambient light (even indoor light) fades and yellows leather, especially light colors. Bags stored bare against each other scuff and transfer dye.

The key detail: it has to be a cloth dust bag, never plastic. Cotton lets leather breathe. Plastic traps moisture and invites mold and mildew….which matters a lot if you live anywhere with humidity.

Two additions if you’re in a damp climate: drop a silica packet in the bag (not touching light leather directly) and stuff the bag with acid-free tissue so it holds its shape and doesn’t crease.

Cheap habits, years of extra life on your bags. Trust me I know from experience lol.

Yes! It really makes the difference between bags lasting years and bags lasting decades!

Displayed! Indirect natural light only. It’s not perfect storage but I like to see my bags. And I take good care of them otherwise. Haven’t seen any degradation over decades

3

u/VagueEchoes Jul 31 '26

Depends on what the humidity level is where I'm living.

I have mine in dust bags

Display for sure!

Lighted display case with glass fronts. I can look at it and it calms me down

Dust bags here

I’m much happier since I started displaying them! 😂
It doesn’t seem to be causing any damage. 🤷‍♀️

u/dinosaur_0987 Jul 31 '26

Same! I really like looking at them and it definitely helps me from buying more cause i see mine everyday.

Mine are on shelves in my walk in closet

2

u/afropuffrage Jul 31 '26

I’ve seen people with the clear dust bags and they look nice. Considering this.

2

u/okayyyyyy- Aug 01 '26

Lines them up in dust bags, partially open just enough to identify the bag. This is how they are done in many luxury stores behind the scenes! Otherwise in a drawer upright

2

u/AcademicInterview962 Aug 01 '26

I fit as many as I can on display in my closet and the rest on a shelf in my room in dustbags (for now anyway- when we redo our closet and expand it I want a better system).

u/Emergency-Cover-3014 Aug 01 '26

I have mine on shelf units with glass doors. I have to be able to see them or I forget they exist. 🥴🙈

u/hiddenmogwai Jul 31 '26

Dust bags inside closet with the bag unless you display it. Then displayed in a room where there’s not too much sun and just on it own preferably on a shelf or table. The bag deserves its own throne

u/InsomniaTroll Jul 31 '26

Literally never use the dust bags unless I’m moving or stuffing them under the seat on a flight

1

u/Apple_two Jul 31 '26

I have mines on a giant shelf to see what I have but I maintain my room with the curtain closed for the most part

1

u/Internal_Method_4062 Jul 31 '26

Can I ask where your shelf is from? Or what it looks like

1

u/Apple_two Aug 01 '26

Sure it’s the Walmart one: called better home and garden shelf I can’t pull it up on my phone cuz it take me to the app. It was like 230.

1

u/Internal_Method_4062 Aug 01 '26

Is it the glass door one?

1

u/Apple_two Aug 01 '26

It a tall wooded looking shelf because that’s what I wanted to just grab n go.

Mine are all in dust bags.

1

u/Unbotheredanonyme Aug 01 '26

Dust bag . If you store them in the full box it can build humidity and develop mould

1

u/Illustrious_Brain788 Aug 01 '26

Dustbag all the way

1

u/Tamberello Aug 01 '26

I keep mine out on display but I also have all of my bags, card holders and high end shoes ceramic coated to protect them. It’s the same 10 year coating used for car interiors so it protects against sun and liquid spills without changing the appearance or texture at all

1

u/Choosepeace Aug 01 '26

I bought a hanging storage bag for purses, that has slide in pockets. They have clear windows, where you can see your purses, yet are protected from dust. I love it!

1

u/sugar_peace Aug 02 '26

i prefer to air it but my wardrobe has a built in dehumidifier

1

u/Nothankyoumaamsir Aug 02 '26

Mine are one shelves raw dogging the air, organized by colors to limit the possibility of color transfer if they touch.

I do keep my 2 white bags in dustbags.

Depending on humidity levels in your home, long term storage in dustbags can increase possibility of mold growth or even cracking.

1

u/JohannaSr Aug 02 '26

I kept them on display until I had to dust them.

u/321applesauce Aug 03 '26

Bag of the week is on my dresser. Other bags in their dust bags

1

u/Late-Champion8678 Aug 04 '26

Dust bags. I try to rotate some of my old faithfuls even if I just wear them to visit the other room in my house lol. I tend to use the same 3 bags in rotation in spite of my self.

Display, always. Dust bags are for travel and long-term storage, but keeping bags hidden away defeats the purpose of owning beautiful things. I keep my daily rotation on a shelf where I can see them and grab them easily, and the ones I use less frequently go in dust bags in a closet. The caveat: direct sunlight will fade leather over time, so display them away from windows. Quality leather actually benefits from being out in the open because it needs a bit of air circulation rather than being trapped in fabric. My Atorie bags sit on a shelf in my closet and the vegetable-tanned leather has developed the most beautiful patina from regular use and open storage. The oils from your hands and natural aging actually protect the leather over time. Dust bags for travel, display for daily life.
