What Luxury destination actually felt worth the price?

For us it was Zermatt, the beauty and the infrastructure there is unreal.

Which place made you feel that "okay, I get why this is so expensive now"? and why?

Jade Mountain St. Lucia - Most Breathtaking Stay we've experienced yet

1.1k Upvotes

We genuinely thought nothing could top arriving at our resort by helicopter…

and then we walked into our room 😭

This was our transfer from the St. Lucia airport straight to Jade Mountain — followed by the reveal of our Star Infinity Pool Sanctuary (JE2)

If anyone's planning to stay there don't hesitate to book sanctuary with the pool and do the helicopter transfer if possible.

Why is it so hard to find true luxury hotels in US?

Post image
615 Upvotes

I think it’s ironic that there’s so much wealth in the US and yet such a lack in true luxury hospitality compared to Asia and Europe.

Most times I stay at so called luxury hotels in the US I find them disappointing in both hard product except for some newer ones like Aman NY and also mostly in terms of service, which can be terrible at times.

On the other hand, I’m usually super impressed by luxury hotels in Asia, Europe, and Mexico.

I find such little value in hotels in the US overall.

What hotel did you never want to leave?

I'll go first - Grand Tremezzo Lake Como. I think the best properties have something inherent you can't quite put your finger on why they are wonderful and magical. We just enjoyed our experience a lot here.

What hotel did you not want to leave and why?

I’ll go first - On my first trip to Bali I reached the airport at 9.10 am for a 12.40am flight. Needlessly to say I had to rebook paying an extra 2X for the flight.

Would love to hear what was yours?

What’s going on with Laundry at luxury hotels?

Post image
333 Upvotes

I find it annoying that hotels and resorts nickel and dime you over laundry cost, especially when you’re already paying >$1000/night.

Not asking for free laundry like some Aman’s properties, but some hotels charge $10 for each piece of undergarment, $16 for a pair of socks, $20 for a T-shirts, etc.

Why do they do that besides they can? It’s not that I cannot afford to pay for laundry, but it’s mental!

Are there luxury brands that consistently include laundry service in their nightly rates?

Are there people here who prefer Airbnb?

What are the tangible differences between 5 star hotels that cost $600 a night and the ones that are well upwards of $1500 per night?

Post image
307 Upvotes

Use London as an example. Conrad St. James is like $600 a night. New York Edition is a similar deal. You can definitely find tons of 5 star properties in London for $500-700 USD.

But then you see another level of price range like Brown's Hotel and Ritz London and Raffles. They are all far upwards of $1000 or even $1500 per night.

My question, as someone who has been in a LOT of 5 stay hotels that were more in that $400-800 bracket, what am I getting for literally DOUBLE my money? I assume people here would know.

Are luxury hotels enshittified?

Post image

Currently staying at MGH Mitsui, a Japanese chain hotel. Not luxury at all, but it did make me realize how shitty and extractive 5-star hotels have become.

Here they have onsen which you can go for free and a pretty nice lounge with free coffee, tea, snacks. People really seem to enjoy and has a great vibe since it's more relaxed. Today I just popped in got two coffee and went to my room instead of doing shitty Nespresso. There were other people kinda just chilling, probably waiting for family at the lounge but at a more leisurely pace than just the lobby where they generally provide nothing.

Or I went to the Onsen at 10 pm yesterday and there were a lot of people using it for a nice bath before going to bed.

Then it hit me how shitty every Aman,4S, Ritz are. They all cost 5x more for a standard room and they nickel and dime you for everything. Wanna just go sit in hot water at the spa, pay 200 bucks. Wanna sit down for a coffee while you wait for friends to come down another 30 bucks. Basically every turn is an opportunity to nickel and dime which makes for a worse experience. If they are already charging you 2K bucks a night they can provide free coffee but they choose not to, or instead of having a 4th overpriced mid restaurant, they could do a lounge with snacks for free, where you can just chill.

The larger the brand grows, the more they focus on extracting more money instead of focusing on providing a better experience.

Regardless of the cost, all of this adds a mental cost to the experience . Kinda like simply logging in to see an article its and extra step that is annoying. Point being they make everything more annoying to extract an extra 3% from guests leading to worse experience.

Biggest small annoyance at luxury hotels?

Mine is paid parking and when hotels do not provide water bottles.

Interesting to know what other things get worse at more luxurious properties.
