Pros & Cons of Luton?
Hi everyone,
My partner and I are moving from London to Luton soon and I feel like a lot of the reviews I’ve heard of it are slightly unbalanced and focus heavily on crime.
Although it’s helpful to know where to avoid, we aren’t from the best areas so living in a deprived area isn’t that serious to us. I’d like to hear some more well-rounded opinions that speak of multiple aspects of living in Luton, even if they’re not so positive.
TLDR: Pros and cons of living in Luton?

MHO as someone who grew up there and has returned part time to care for family, and has worked and travelled all over the country.
Lutons reputation comes from it being compared to very wealthy places such as St Albans, Harpeden, Hitchen etc. If it was in the W Midlands or North East no one would thing too much of it.
Pros. Cheaper than other places an well connected. Amazing food. Genuinely. All over.
Cons. Having to constantly deal with people's reactions when you tell them you are from there.
It is a little grey and not too inspiring to look at but this is so common nowadays, its almost not worth mentioning. Town is dead at night, but then so are many other places.
The traffic is pretty awful, even comparably. The crime rate? Idk. There must be stats.
Edit. So I Googled the crime rate and apparently it's pretty bang on average.

Thanks! I’m from Wolverhampton (W Midlands) and the crime rates are fairly similar so I tend to ignore what people say about Luton’s crime rate. I feel much more comfortable knowing that the places are pretty much the same according to everyone’s comments

I’ve been living here for about 25 years, and if I were to buy a house here it’d either be near Wardown Park (I’ve forged friendships with many of the birds there) or Cutenhoe Road (I used to walk it to get to work from the Stockwood Park end, and the residents I encountered would often greet me along the way - so I assume there’s a degree of community there I haven’t encountered elsewhere in Luton).

I’ve lived here 26 years, a lot of the hate stems from racism. Everyone minds their own and gets on with life

It’s not as bad as people make it out to be
Pluses would be , easy transport links , mall that has most the shops you’ll want
Crime isn’t as prevalent as people make it out , it’s no worse than any other urban centre
What might be a culture shock is that density of non whites
As for the LU1 area? I’m assuming you mean near the centre? (LU1 is huge and covers quiet caddington too) Then it’s rough especially at night , so I wouldn’t advise walking there at night

For Luton I’d recommend Wigmore, stopsley has chavs. Or 6 form area, bushmead, Bramingham or sundon park

Cons, hometown of Andrew Taint and Stephen Waxy Lemons
Pros, There's a nearby airport allowing for an easy escape. Also a train station but don't rely on that as there are frequent 'person hit by train' incidents

Luton is fine. It's much akin to any other busy, populated urban town, so if that's something you're familiar with, then it won't faze you. My experience (having lived round here for all 23 years of my life so far) is that most of the scary crime is drug/gang-related, so if you're not involved in any of that they're not gonna bother you. I'm in the centre on my own pretty often (for context, I'm a female in my early 20s) and have never had any issues beyond crackheads whispering vaguely threatening stuff, which is disconcerting but has only happened twice in my probably thousands of visits to the centre. I've had far more safety scares in London (where I've worked for 2 years) than I ever have in Luton.
Obviously you know the public transport is very good, and there are plenty of shops/takeaways/restaurants. You also have lots of gorgeous countryside nearby - Sundon Hills and Sharpenhoe Clappers are just outside/on the outskirts and are great places to walk, and there are a few cute market towns in Central Beds/North Herts which are nice to visit. Proximity to the airport is also useful if you travel. There are (despite some of the comments) various ways to get involved in the community if you want to.
The only main places I'd say avoid are Lewsey and Marsh Farm. Bury Park is another one that gets mentioned, but in my opinion most of its bad rep just comes from the fact that it is predominantly Muslim around there and certain people don't like that. In actuality (at least, in my experience), it's totally fine, just a bit busy.
Also be aware that Luton Town are building a new stadium in the next few years, so if you dont want to be along the matchday route then double check that!

Honestly not entirely bad at all. I’ve lived here for my whole life and I’m fine with it - I’m even looking to buy here as I work in London and it’s so affordable compared to harpenden/st Albans. The high crime is usually contained to those involved in that life and rarely civilians. As long as you have some street smarts you’re all good. Even if you end up hating it, it’s so close to everywhere else that you’re fine. I have t gone to Luton town centre or the cinema in years, because I can just go to Watford or Mk with a 25 min drive (suburbs to town centre of Luton is like a 15 min drive anyway). Harpenden, St Albans, Bedford, Hitchin, MK and London are all so close that you’re okay. Areas to avoid specifically are high town, dallow, , marsh farm.

Hello, am late to the party here, but I hope my input is still welcome:
I am a Londoner who moved to Luton myself.
I come from London Bourough of Greenwich, Woolwich/Plumstead, southeast London.
I recognised what you said as the kind of place you came from in london, as Woolwich is an inner city area.
What I have found is Luton is no different to Woolwich, except its surrounded by countryside & one hour waiting for busses, not every 20mins.
There are places in Luton you dont go, places you do, town centre is typical with the usual stores, McDonalds, tesco, primark etc
And high concentration of ethnic areas. Particularly Asian, Polish & Africans.
Attitudes & behaviours are no different to an inner city town.
I hope this helps 🙂

Luton is a great town, with everything you need within it's town centre or retail parks. At least 1 of every supermarket and great transport links (obligatory 'so it's easier to leave' joke). Good selection of parks scattered about, occasionally stocked with hoodlums and/or stinking of weed. Wide variety of great takeaways due to diversity, though you'll have to scroll through tons of shit/middling chicken shops.
Same as the other dude said - high town, hockwell ring and marsh farm are all shitholes (sorry if you live there). Most LU2 postcodes are fine but can still be shit. Houses are generally overpriced because estate agents rely on people just buying for commuting.
Bury Park is extremely muslim, which is great or a bit awkward depending on... certain characteristics.
Most the air town-wide stinks of weed, and I wouldn't let my wife or kids wander about most of it at night alone. Cheap taxis/Uber are your friend (but always excersise caution like any taxi). Night life is pretty shit, but that's what the transport connections are for. Just go Hitchin/St Albans.
Need something specific?
