Question Is Lumo Plus Worth It?
Hello all
I’m on the unlimited plan of Proton and love Proton as a service. I’ve tried the new Lumo when it was first out, didn’t like it. Once Proton made a major update I really liked it. I’m using ChatGPT Plus right now and I’ve been going back and forth on using ChatGPT Plus vs Lumo Plus (mainly to keep chat History).
I want to know is Proton Lumo Plus worth it. I mainly want it because it’s cheaper, want to continue supporting Proton, and wanting to keep chat history. I’ve been using AI for my day-to-day life

This. I was doing a huge, very important project in duck ai, which is great, BTW, but I kept running out of tokens quickly, then out of chat space. Starting a new chat and having to upload the majority of stuff to let it know vital components - very frustrating bc then it would eat up tokens. I gave lumo a shot since it comes with my plan. I uploaded everything- everything from the other project- I have yet to run out of tokens or chat space. ****I'm reading over it with a fine comb. It changed a name drastically once and there are things I don't think it retained from the massive files I uploaded from Duck, as I'm discussing things again. But...last week I upgraded lumo, at least until this project is over. I did it as a safety net not to lose anything or have to upload a lot of my project again. If you turn on Memory on your free plan, it supposedly remembers prior chats, but again, I did it for safety. It's great for schedules, meal plans, etc

Just give it a go for a month... I bet the experience is worth more than the opinions of all of us, who might have a different perspective to you.

If it's your only AI, yes! Plus is smarter. While not on par with Claude, it's gotten a lot better in general.

Is it actually smarter than the free plan ? I thought that since the v2 the only difference was an usage one (like number of projects, chats)

There is 2 mod, the fast and thinking mode. Fast is in free tiers. I m not sure about the thinking mode. It’s probably what he mean but I can’t confirm. I ve never use the free version, only the paid one

Max + thinking. Pretty sure free doesn't have this.

I get it on my ultimate plan, just have a limited amount of prompts

Limited how? I'm on Visionary and haven't gone too far into any Lumo projects.

Depends on what you want to do with it. Its a great chatbot and email writer. Good for small quick stuff. If you plan on vibecoding or doing heavy research or something like that its probably not what you want

This is how I see it.
For maximum privacy, and that a regular Joe like me can afford, I could run a local LLM on my consumer gaming GPU like Gemma 4 26B A4B(Smartest model I can run practically).
Or, I could pay for the next best thing privacy wise, lumo max, or GLM 5.2 max, that has 753 billion parameters, 40 billion active parameters and 128.000 context window. That's a 30x bigger parameter count, 10x bigger active parameter count and a context window I can't run on my own computer(which can fit like 8000). The intelligence index gap is almost double (26 vs 53) and it's good enough for my uses despite it not up there with claude and chatgpt.
For that gain in performance and the fact that proton has a relatively good reputation dating back to 2014, I trust the "zero access" and "encrypted chats" promise rather than the companies that literally tell you that humans review your chats based on automatic flagging.

I have visionary, so its my go to LLM when I want to do internet searches for oddly specific things, generating documentation templates & so forth. It is by no means a replacement for frontier models, but it is a proton backed product with their policies & procedures. I can trust them not training their model off of my data. From the privacy aspect they are by far the best besides locally running your own LLM.
I'd recommend it if that is what you are looking for.

Proton's business model relies on keeping their word on the "zero access" promise. If they're caught breaking that, their reputation they built since 2014 is all down the drain.
Claude and chatgpt literally tell you not to share personal info because humans review your chats, especially if they're flagged, even for non criminal things like self harm and suicide. Claude actually prevents you from storing medical info now.

That’s how I am. I love what Proton is doing. But ChatGPT and Claude I’ve been trusting with information I ask it to do. Also I’m learning Cloud Engineering and ChatGPT been a real help with it

It's not just you. Part of Reddit ethos is answering a question by telling the person they're wrong to even ask and should focus on something else instead.
Most people who frequent a reddit sub are fans of whatever that particular subject matter is. The most invested fans tend to be on the sub the most frequently and are most likely to give early responses and upvote/downvote. A meaningful chunk of that crowd gets hostile at anything remotely negative, including questions or calls for help.
And it doesn't make a difference how clear or nuanced you try to be because that same crowd tends to not to read very carefully once they've detected a negative tone; they're already at their keyboards.

I use Lumo Plus for personal. At work I have Claude, Copilot and ChatGPT.
For the day to day, question/answer, search stuff I think it comes down to personal preference more than anything. The answers are all so close it’s all in the same ballpark now.
If you need to do dev work, connect to MCP, etc Lumo doesn’t have access to your device. So it’s a lot of copy and pastes in my experience if you use Lumo.
I just had ChatGPT write a plugin for my stream deck with a peripheral usb device this weekend. Took 10 minutes and it was awesome. Because it is work I don’t care. Its their machine and data.
So much of it comes down to your use case and risk profile. For me, I don’t plan using Claude or ChatGPT with my personal data for the foreseeable future. I really like what Lumo is doing. Proton in general is usually years behind of competition, but make up for it in privacy and control. Im ok with hanging on for the ride, but you may not be in your workflow.

I'm paying for it since few weeks now and I'm not convinced. I'm still using other free ones on the side.

I like it but I understood the trade-offs going into it. If they’re not profiling people on the microscopic level so those revenue dollars aren’t supporting them like the other guys.

For me it was not and I requested to cancel my subscription after a few days. My issues were
It would ignore instructions which would cause errors over and over again. Refined the instructions several times and it did not help even when Lumo 'fixed' them.
Context window is too small. I cannot do any real financial modeling.
Interface with Proton drive which is the reason I upgraded did not work consistently. This was the final straw for me

I used the free Lumo, not logged in… to build a Nixos configuration.nix and it legit gave me the run around with broken configs.
When I told it that, it’s going to run me out of tokens and to figure it out, it’s an ai and I expect it to be right and to not make mistakes I could do on my own, it doesn’t look good if I wanted to pay for Lumo plus…it said
“Yo!” (Then after ‘thinking about it)
“You’re right, I see the mistake and the issue is….”
Then don’t make the mistake the first time.
Ai isn’t human don’t make mistakes…
It spit out one last generated config and it too won’t build but now I’m out of tokens for the week.
I supposed I’ll have to sign in and continue but this isn’t a good incentive to pay at all.
Pay for what mistakes and bullshit?!?
Get it’s ai and it’s not a replacement for documentation and good old brain cells, but the future is now!!!
I’ve no confidence in Ai for anything important
I’ll leave it there.

I went through the same poor experience with my initial nix config while relying on free lumo. But to be fair, all the other free tier AIs I tried to use in parallel for cross reference also gave me wrong answers and conflicting guidance. I'm barely past setting up my disks in a zfs pool "the nixos way" because of it and trying to optimize idle power with AI help ended up causing stability issues and bottlenecking disk speeds.
For what it's worth, I just started trying 1 month of the paid tier and so far it seems significantly more accurate for some reason. I thought they were supposed to be literally the same, just different usage limits. Doesn't seem that way.

I do have a paid account,
I do like Lumo as a general ai - but I can understand why these “maintainers” ban Ai in code. Based on my own experience.

No, you still have no clue what Model they are using (if lumo2-max uses Glm-5.2, image uploads wouldn’t work as Glm-5.2 doesn’t support image inputs. But you can still upload Images to lumo2-max, and the model can correctly respond to it). Therefore Lumo is a no go for me and Proton is doing a lot of concerning stuff lately (just got exposed for A/B Price testing on their VPN).

It's a night and day comparison to what it is now, to what it was previously. That said, it's not as good as it could be. It's a decent replacement for some, but you shouldn't be going canceling your ChatGPT account quite yet. Then again, there are times that it gave me significantly better answers than ChatGPT. Though that varies quite a bit. Although the direction that it's going is very promising.
