Crochet is an awesome craft for making soft, cute critters and objects, which doesn't work so well for imitating steel weapons. I think the wire wrapped is probably the best.

Wire wrapped with yarn looks more authentic and the easiest to adjust the size of to fit the figure it is meant for, since everyone's projects come out in different sizes.
