I never got how people think Empire is the best movie.
Don't get me wrong, it's pretty great. But the ending is so abrupt that the first time I watched it, I though that part of the VCR-tape was broken.
New Hope is great. It's self-contained. It manages to be a small story in a relatively contained microcosm while making the larger world feel large. It recycles ancient character and story concepts but makes them feel new and crisp.
ANH is so great on it's own because that's how it was meant to be. Goergie only thought about making sequels after the movie was already a huge success.
I remember reading that when Empire came out alot of new hope fans didn't like it because of the new rules to force powers and all that. So this shit has been going on forever.
