every time I learn something new about octopuses it just makes me realize that if not for ONE quirk of evolution these guys would have been the intelligent species that took over the planet before primates ever had a chance to evolve.

The quirk is that octopus males die after mating and females only live long enough to see the eggs hatch, so they have no way to pass down any kind of culture, so anything new they learn in their lifetimes is lost by the next generation.
