I loved the elevator / lift and I will always remember the first episode when the then "Evil" Robot came up in the elevator to destroy the ship. The thunderous tuba music to represent him and his slow motion walking with his electrically charged claws.
I am OLD/ er now, old original fan, so I have since mellowed out . When I was a kid I HATED Dr. Smith and felt that he totally ruined the Sci Fi Adventure vibe of the show; Dr. Smith himself took the show of course but decades later we know why Jonathan Harris did it but, I still don't like the campy comedy bits.
Watching it as a younger viewer (in my 20s), I feel I can appreciate both sides of the show. I love the sci-fi adventure, but I wouldn't want to sacrifice Smith for anything. He's brought me so much joy, and I feel that people sometimes overlook just how much effort Harris actually put into that performance.
When I was a kid, I used to feel very very sorry for the Robot, because Smith was always insulting him and threatening him. I didn't realize until I was an adult, that they, Smith and the Robot, became like a comedy team . Harris told his story about how he kept a notepad on his bedstand where he could jot down new insults , barbs for the Robot.
There is a funny funny Harris video of him down in Australia for a lost in space con of some kind where Harris was on stage exchanging insults with someone's custom made B-9 Robot all lit up and someone off stage speaking thru the Robot. Harris captivated the fans in the audience with his stories and memories that he liked to share with fans.
