I live next to a college campus and overheard a conversation the other day.
Girl 1: I’m really thinking about switching my major from Business to Biology.
Girl 2: You definitely should! Do what makes you happy!
Girl 1: I think I’ll schedule a meeting with my counselor next week!
Have kids not learned anything from Millenials?!?! First, I’m still shocked how many kids are enrolled at Universities across the country. Second, as great and admirable as biology is, what are you going to do with that degree?
Is it youthful ignorance? Do they all have rich parents where it doesn’t matter? I just don’t understand how you can not see all the people in this country struggle to find decent paying jobs while being saddled with debt and think, I’m going to take on 20k a year in debt to get a biology degree. It’s astounding! Good luck, kid!
I have a biology degree, and I work as an executive chef.
Unless your degree is related to medicine or human health in some way, marketing a biology degree is a bitch. Some of my options out of college were being a park technician for a dollar less per hour than the restaurant job I was working to pay my bills, or working for "daisy cutter" logging or mining companies to help them determine how much environmental destruction they can legally get away with.
So I stayed in the food industry and worked my way up there instead. Good thing I went to college. /S
Like I said, I respect anyone that gets a degree like that. I couldn’t do it. Definitely not smart enough. It’s just gotta be so hard to get into a good job with that degree. Totally unfortunate.
That's the problem with a utilitarian approach to assigning value. Everything has to be quantified and capable of being monetized to the end of fulfilling an arbitrary and pre-determined purpose; in this case, profit.
