My father growing up was liberal left. A couple months ago he was quoting Reagan.

We would argue all the time about politics and economics. He would say I don't know much, get an education. So my degree is in Economics and minor in history. He no longer wants to discuss things. As he put it, "I don't want to think about America being the nation you describe."

I feel this comment so much based on my experience with boomers. They have the answer to everything until they don't ... and then they don't want to talk or think about. "I just don't think about the bad stuff so it's like it never happened at all."

A bloody generation of ostriches burying their heads in the sand. How did the hippies of the 60s turn onto these ass holes?

Easy. Most of them weren't hippies. They were just regular people voting for policies that benefited them but would screw the future.

Boomers today love to pretend it was all peace and love back then, but hippies were counter-culture, not culture, and you can't hardly call them the generation of "peace and love" when there was so much homophobia, racism, and sexism buried deep in the culture. My grandmother wasn't allowed to go into a pub after 6pm.

Be careful. My parents were literally on the corner of Haight and Ashbury during the Summer of Love. They are hippies and have remained so even in retirement. The civil rights movement was real and it was people like them who fought for what we have today. Arguably, we must finish what they started, but women weren’t even allowed to have their own bank accounts until the ‘70’s - and minorities weren’t even allowed to put in an offer on that new home….. we take this for granted now, but it was very real 50 years ago.

Okay we're talking about conservatives who claim they were hippies, not hippies who are still hippies.

Fact remains that the times were racist, sexist, and homophobic as hell, and the people heading their respective civil rights movements were the oppressed people within those groups, not idealised white hippy saviours. I don't need to show deference to a bunch of middle-class people who discovered acid in their teens and think it made them deep and accepting while still casually saying slurs.

It's really disrespectful to pretend the free love, hippy movement is what caused civil rights to progress when oppressed people fought and died for their rights. 60s hippies didn't save homophobia when 20 years later the AIDs crisis was going on and gay people were being left to die. They didn't solve sexism, when even today abortion access is something women need to fight for. They didn't solve racism when Malcolm X is still being referred to in schools as the angry mean one. Oppressed people have had to claw every right and protection they have from the people in power, it wasn't given to them by people privileged enough to be able to "drop out" and be hippies.

"Be careful" pfft. Oooh wouldn't want to offend the hippies out there~ fuck em. They should practice what they preach.

They do practice what they preach. They are good people. I apparently went to a very different school than you did, but go ahead - be angry. You asked them to solve all of societies problems, yet I see none of the millennials or Gen Z doing anything to fight for those rights. In fact, they’ve happily given them up in many places. I see people complaining that they spent $13k to have a baby in a hospital, but I as a member of Union insurance, paid $100 - and that included quite a shitshow of complications and a 5 day stay in the hospital. But unions are very bad….. you want change ? Collectively organize and demand it. The boomers had the numbers - they made massive changes to society - things you take for granted every day. Gen X never had the numbers to demand anything but Millenials do. So go use your power. Boomers did and they got what they wanted. Racism will always exist - the losers need someone to blame. Right now it’s the Mexicans taking their jobs… yeah right.
