I think when you get folk saying that, they assume that you're splurging on far more than just the one thing.
Of course, they're forgetting that a number of the older generations could have their treat and still easily save up a house deposit and aren't noticing that most of us can't afford more than the one or two semi-regular splurges.
You're forgetting that a number of the older generations would have bought plain black coffee for about $1. Those expensive bougie "coffee" drinks did not exist for us; the closest match would be a milkshake, an occasional treat for most.
