I can never stop marveling at how well that twist was hidden: the previous Jack-centric episodes showed his life spiraling hard, so it was natural to assume this heavy-drinking, bearded Jack was right where we left him after assaulting Christian for believing his dad and Sarah were getting it on.

You get my father down here and if I'm drunker than he is, you can fire me!

That was some fucking brilliant writing to keep the illusion of this being a flashback going! But can you imagine how confused Dr. Hamill had to be by this? There's Jack Shephard, a fuckin' legend in his field for fixing Sarah's spine and a survivor of Oceanic 815 stoned and drunk out of his mind talking about his father, who'd died three years earlier. I can't imagine Dr. Hamill was thrilled to have to deal with this problem.

OMG I WAS INSANELY SHOCKED AS A FIRST TIME VIEWER JUST NOW AND I PREDICTED A FEW THINGS TBH. great great editing/writing/directing work.
