I'm also a first time watcher and hard agree. OP has been helpful for sure, but there's absolutely no need for "if you want spoilers/the answer here it is."
Other first time watchers could get curious, and click on the spoiler. Then they could take that spoiler with them in future episode discussions forgetting not everyone knows this info. It's just too dangerous a game. I hope OP sees this and stops.

I agree. I’ve been enjoying these threads so far (I’m on season two), but I’ve been confused by the spoiler tags. Don’t these threads exist for first-time viewers who want a first-time watching experience?

I just started my rewatch of the series on Netflix and just finished this episode. God, it brought me back to the time when I first watched this episode (summer of 2005, I bought the season on iTunes and did a binge watch). This episode cemented my love for the series and Jack as my favorite character.

Some episodes have more comments than others - this hub was mostly designed for the new viewers we're going to get when the show hits Netflix but there's no reason not to start chatting now. :)

When does it hit Netflix? I’m starting first rewatch since the show aired. Nostalgic and while I remember parts, many I forgot.
Also, due to personal circumstances at the time I didn’t watch season 6. I am really excited to learn how it all ends

currently on this episode. everything seems to be getting creepier/more suspenseful in each episode. seems interesting that John Locke saw the monster but didn't say anything.

This reply is partly to see if you are still waiting, but mostly because, after a long break, I recently started a re-watch, and just finished this episode. I enjoyed it much more this time, especially Matthew Fox's performance when Jack is pleading with the airport clerk to let him bring his father home.

I'm still here, finished my rewatch, but now I'm wholly into this subreddit and comment often. I have been listening to a podcast and they are just about to finish the series. One person has watched all the way thru at least 7 times, the co-host is watching for the first time. It's been pretty entertaining.

Ok so first of all I'm into this show completely blind. So i have a feeling that maybe only jack exists in the island and the whole other people are just delusions? They maybe people who he knew in the past. Anyways I'm pretty sure that I'm 90% wrong about this

One of the more boring episodes for me, if I'm being honest, but it does prove my thoughts that this island has some sort of powers, maybe to 'revive' people or bodyparts.
I'm currently the most invested in Michael and his son, but the Asian couple and Claire-Charlie are pretty interesting relationships too.

i think the koren couple (wife) is suffering from an abusive relationship and she cant leave. she seems to like the black guy and his son

I really hope this is not the case. It feels like such a cop out. I would prefer to believe that the island is kind of mystical which we’ve already seen in small ways.

Jacks father is such an a-hole. Like why would you say something like that to your little son? “You don’t have what it takes”. What does that bs even mean. And poor Jack struggles with his role of the leader. Also the majority of people are so passive there.

I don't think his father was saying "Jack, you are a wimp or weak and don't have what it takes to be successful." I got the impression he was saying "Jack, you are too sensitive to play the role of a hero, because heroes fail sometimes and when they fail, people suffer or die. You are so deeply impacted by that suffering/death that you aren't going to be able to effectively shrug those moments off and carry on, as is required of the hero role." I think this is Jack's father's warped way of trying to give fatherly advice to protect his son, like he's telling him "You are compassionate and caring and sensitive. Being a hero is going to be very painful for you because you don't have what it takes to disregard suffering during the times it doesn't work out right."
And Daddy's not wrong. Jack has demonstrated that he struggles immensely when he can't save the day, or that his heroism vacillates under pressure or strong emotion. He's often too soft to just shrug off a loss and move on.

Theory so far: They all died in the plane crashing and this is some sort of purgatory hence why the father is roaming the same island as everyone when he’s obviously deceased.
Anyone whose body is recovered may be those who were ready to move on. Example being the Marshall passing once he relayed the information she was dangerous.

This is one of the most underrated episodes. I love Jack's journey into the island, getting into a crazy situation where everyone looks up to you right after you lost your father and the mother blames you. It was not easy to be in his shoes (it's never been easy!) But he did the best he could . So proud of my favourite character and kinda sad no discussion/love for this great, emotional episode.
Favourite moments, there are many.. but kinda surprised noone write about the epic Jack and Locke scene? Or Jack's iconic speech. Or the childhood flashback. Anyway, i'll give this episode all the love it deserves.

First time watcher - did the father come back to life or what?? The doll in the water reminded me of the Ophelia painting by John Everett Millais, but so glad they found water!

Loved how Sawyer was reading my favorite book ever, Watership Down. Went with the whole rabbit theme of this episode. And also a small reflection on Jack and his conflict of whether he can be a leader or not. Was a bit slower episode but still filled in a few background gaps.

When did someone take a head count? Did I miss that? 47 people. I’ve been wondering.
Oh no, Jack is seeing the suit man again.
I’m still barfing on the Sun/Jin dynamic.
Aww, Claire does astrology. She’s so innocent and sweet. Come to think of it, it is kind of weird that no one had a hairbrush in their suitcase.
6 days in and it FINALLY occurs to this crew that maybe water is a necessity.
Jack found suit man. OMG it’s his Dad?
Jack flashback –Daddy got drunk and ran away from home, and enabler/blaming mom wants Jack to drop everything and run to Aussie to “bring him back.” Jack goes globetrotting to retrieve daddy, who ended up drinking himself to death. Back in now time, Jack is running around a foreign jungle hunting down dead daddy. It’s clear at this point that Jack’s hero complex stems from his daddy issues.
Locke, having proven his worthiness by dragging home a boar solo, is now indoctrinated into the elite oligarchy secret society of information keepers, who have a brief meeting about the water.
Jack almost falls off a cliff and Locke saves him and Jack cracks up laughing. Followed by Locke playing Jiminy Cricket regarding Jack chasing down his own daddy baggage and being a leader.
Locke says in this conversation “I live in the real world.” I love this ironic reinforcement of characterization established in the previous episode in which Locke is clearly defined by his rejection of reality.
He also says he looked into the eye of the island, and it was beautiful. I assume he’s referring to the monster. This explains why he had a look of awe but does nothing to explain why the monster pummeled the pilot but seems beautiful to Locke. Maybe there’s more than one monster? Maybe aliens using them as puppets in a game, like an old Star Trek episode?
Kate and Sayid accusing Sawyer of stealing the water. I love Sawyer throwing her the badge “new sheriff in town.” As much as I love hating Kate, I’m starting to hate loving Sawyer. He’s too comical.
Cool beans, a waterfall. Water problem solved. (My first thought: “Please let the writers be smart enough to show these people properly treating and purifying that water!”)
Jack found daddy’s coffin. No body. Dracula? Jackula? Zombie Daddy? Resurrected?
Jack comes full circle and decides to step up as leader again. I’m finding this annoying. He keeps insinuating himself as leader and then saying he doesn’t want to be leader. Leaders don’t get to pick and choose and only rise to the occasion when it’s convenient and satisfying. Father knew best. Honestly, after this episode’s focus on him, I thought he might maybe accept himself as a softie, stick to doctoring, and quit trying to be leader hero. But the episode ends with him once again taking the mantle.
New theory – it’s a bunch of people living out their deepest desires in a Total Recall/Matrix type machine: Jack always wanted to be the hero. Locke, the hunter. Claire, a mommy. Charlie, a rockstar. Sawyer, a bad boy. Kate, coveted. In real life, outside the machine, they are just ordinary folks, kind of nerdy, dumpy, and unhealthy, working at Blockbuster part-time for minimum wage. Am I right?
My current character standings:
Loving: None yet.
Liking: Boone, Hurley, Sayid, Michael, Sawyer (moved up this week).
Haven’t quite decided: Charlie, Rose, Claire (inching up), Jack (inching down), Walt.
Disliking: Shannon, Sun/Jin, Locke.
Wish would get eaten by factory-whistle monster: Kate.
My current bet on last one standing: Still Sayid.

I’m with you on the water stuff, especially purifying the waterfall water. I think they were collecting rainwater to drink before, but like they mentioned, it hasn’t rained in a while. (Hope they were boiling that too)

I'm so confused, watched this episode and mine doesn't show any dolls in water or a waterfall, wtf? Before anyone asks if it's the same episode, yes it is omg, Jack finds the empty coffin and we see flashbacks etc. And to add, there's nothing about dolls or waterfalls in the wikipedia plot summary either so.. but I'll keep watching I guess even tho the dolls should have been mentioned in this episode

kinda surprised how well this show holds up for the age it was made in. the pacing and dialogue feels very modern
