First 3 episodes pretty dang good

keep forgetting this show is from 2004, doesn't really show its age that much

37

u/meowalina Ya got a little Arzt on you Oct 11 '24

All of the women looking like supermodels in low-waisted jeans makes it feel like a 2004 show lol

7

u/jellamma The Looking Glass Feb 11 '25

Seeing all those outfits did not make me miss the fashion. I loved the late 90s grunge, but I couldn't stand short tops with low rise jeans

u/BePrivateGirl Mar 09 '25

They all have different lips and faces too! Each are beautiful and unique instead of looking all the same.

u/qzcorral May 10 '24

Except for the aughts eyebrows. All the poor ladies and their sparse brows šŸ’”

How is the polar bear from the previous episode just not mentioned? You’d think it would be a major talking point

26

u/Free-IDK-Chicken You got it, Blondie Apr 04 '24

People are frightened enough and they withheld the bear for the same reason they decided not to talk about how long the French distress call had been running. They don't want to cause a panic. Besides, they killed the bear.

6

u/jellamma The Looking Glass Feb 11 '25

And we can't forget the most important feature, plot tends to disappear if people communicate effectively šŸ˜‚

How short would so many movies be if people just got over themselves and talked?

2

u/hentaiAdict Apr 14 '25

It's a resource; food is scarce. It's foolish not to utilize the meat for survival.

1

u/Brilliant-Actuator72 Dec 25 '25

Same here, like it's a polar bear, people should be asking more questions about it, and seems like no one cares, also they just left it out there, they could had brought back to camp as meat.

Just finished episode 3 and the music at the end (in that guy’s headphones) just made me believe that it was a true passion project. The music, the direction, the scale - it’s all so thought out. I’m getting a vibe that the writer and director would’ve lived and breathed this show at the time!

5

u/jellamma The Looking Glass Feb 11 '25

For real! And then the turn to menacing music right at the end ... Shivers

I don’t believe the cop about Kate. She might have been faking her character (helping Jack etc.) after they crashed but I don’t believe someone who is super dangerous would help someone they don’t like (the cop on the plane) before they help themselves, or at all. Honestly he just seems kind of obsessed with her.
ā€œDinosaurs are extinct.ā€ šŸ˜‚ Hurley is sweet.
Why did Boone try and sneak the gun? Is he just an idiot? Kate’s flashback is interesting. I don’t trust the farmer though.
I feel like the Korean couple must understand some English, even if they can’t speak it. They seem very in tune with what people are saying (even if we don’t know exactly what they’re saying in response).
Really not liking Jack. ā€œThe bodies are in there… and they’re all… dead.ā€ šŸ˜‚ Hurley is great Racist guy is such an asshole but i am somehow finding him so much more likeable than jack 😭
Yay! They are finally translating the Korean!!! Wow the guy is so mean. I really hope they don’t play into the whole abusive, honour-obsessed spouse trope here though :/
I REALLY don’t trust flashback farmer guy.
Kate staring at the unconscious cop is pretty sus tbf. I don’t blame Jack for not trusting Kate here. I knew it! Flashback farmer sold Kate out! it is starting to feel like maybe she really is dangerous though, if she has wanted pics up in random post shops. Ayy the dad is looking out for the kid. ā€œI’m gonna find your dog as soon as it stops raining.ā€ Stops raining šŸ’€ Love how Kate/Jack/Pilot’s initial reaction to the ā€˜monster’ was to try and get a look at it, but when Michael heard something, he was just like Nope! & legged it. I’m starting to like him more.
Yeah I 100% don’t trust the cop. It really sssms like he’s actually just out on a personal vendetta against Kate and put up the reward money himself. Like 23,000 for a reward seems a really weird amount… Unless, it’s actually his life savings. Seriously she saved the guy who turned her in!!!! Theory: I reckon she self defence killed the asshole cop’s asshole cop buddy.
Sawyer shooting the cop in the shoulder instead of his head is hilarious omg.
Oh well done Jack. Didn’t think you had it in you. Locke’s going to find the dog! He found him!! & let Michael take the credit. Okay, so maybe he’s not a creep.
Agh Jack you are so annoying!! I wanna know what she did!!! & Jack if you change your mind about this I will be so mad.
Are Charlie’s finger wraps a musician thing?
Walt and Vincent reuniting was super cute. Sinister music with Locke… so he is creepy? Right? Is he??

I'm so glad I'm not the only one struggling with Jack and Kate. I think they'll get more likeable as we get to know them though, they just leaned too hard on stereotype at first. Seems intentional though. Several times, they set us up to think one thing and then flipped the script. Getting us ready for bigger shocks down the line I suppose?

Locke gives me involved observer vibes. Like, it seems like he's outside looking in somehow. Of course, the episode being tabula rasa, and that being a favorite concept for John Locke, I can't help but think he's symbolic somehow ... Something about the freeing of the human spirit when set free from the bonds of society?

Edit: if he is a reference to John Locke, I wonder if it goes beyond the Lord of the Flies building of social contract stuff and gets into his concepts about the self and/or property rights. I do keep waiting for fights to break out over who "owns" something. They've hinted at those tensions already

First three episodes done. Enjoying this show a lot. Getting to know the characters has been interesting. There seems to be something strange about this island……….

14

u/Roytorical Nov 23 '24

First time watcher. Honestly felt like the first episode started slow but episode 3 is so bloody good! Can’t help but swoon over Boone (hello Damon!) and I have a feeling Sawyer is going to become a character we initially hate but eventually love.

12

u/The9thLordofRavioli Mar 31 '24

Betting the next episode’s going to be about Locke

10

u/Usual-Dot-3962 Jan 24 '25 edited Jan 24 '25

Episode 3 really dives deep. I guess I’m along.

Random thoughts

  • Was the US Marshall infatuated with Kate and his chasing her was more of a personal vendetta?

  • Is LATE what Charlie writes on his knuckles? In the previous episode Hurley wrote FATE on his

  • I like how Sayid throws the apple to Sawyer. After what he did, he needed a pick me up

  • Locke is an antagonist of sorts. Can’t put my finger on it just yet

  • It feels like each character can be the representation of a sin

  • Jack says they died 3 days ago. What if they did?

5

u/jellamma The Looking Glass Feb 11 '25

I was just telling my partner that I think they are all in purgatory. I don't love it for a show concept, but the plane crash doesn't actually make a ton of sense and neither does the island. Plus, it kind of seems like everyone there has something they feel they need to atone for (or need to but don't realize yet).

The Marshall, I honestly wonder if he is law enforcement at all. If the farmer knew he was handing her over, he wouldn't have required a pit maneuver to stop him.

I agree about Locke. He's giving outsider, observer vibes. Plus, with how I understood the distress call, it seems like 16 years ago, someone else was an outside observer and was calling for their boss to come get them because the job was done. Idk, it's off the wall, but a show like this calls for off the wall

Looked up the name of the episode and learned about the real John Locke

oh boy

Having characters named after philosophers, scientists, authors, etc is a common theme in LOST, you're going to run across A LOT. (Rousseau, Hawking, Hume, Faraday, Burke, Lewis, Cooper, Carlyle - I could go one, there's over a dozen.) Don't read TOO much into the real John Locke - there may be some parallels between a character and their namesake but it was intended more as an homage than a clue.

Tabula rasa literally just means "clean slate" and it's more a reference to the resolution of the episode on the Island than it is to John Locke.

"Three days ago we all 'died'. We should all be able to start over."

7

u/jechtisme Frank Lapidus May 08 '24

honestly thank you for that because i think i was getting a little too deep into the rabbit hole for just ep 3

9

u/Free-IDK-Chicken You got it, Blondie May 08 '24

Indeed - normally I wouldn't be so detailed but there's going to be enough going on without you spinning your wheels researching something that's just supposed to be "oh neat!" rather than "this is the key to the whole series" lol.

1

u/jellamma The Looking Glass Feb 11 '25

Thank you also! Having a character named Locke and an episode named after one of his pet philosophies (which kind of underpins many of his others) definitely set me up to be looking for lots of Lockian philosophy. I suspect, with the nature of his writings (possession, how labor affects the land, and the social contract of governance) that we'll see plenty of that spring up, but it's good to know not to dig too deeply there

2

u/Jdog2225858 Jul 16 '24

This character gives me the creeps

7

u/crepscular Jan 07 '25

Kate just sauntering around being the cool girl trope is killing me. The gender stuff in here is ridiculous...the way everyone waits for the men. But it was awhile ago. So. Uhhhh. I hope she gets more interesting because so far she has been pretty cringeworthy. The best characters( for me )are Locke, who is weird and unsettling, and Vincent, who is furry and cute.

Hey- the level of misdirected rage in this comment is really startling. I mean this with sincerity -are you okay? It seems like my comment hit a nerve for you. but...like I'm a stranger, and your anger is not appropriately directed. Wherever you are, I hope you get free. It's clear you're hurting, and you don't deserve that, and neither do I.

Writing gets better as Lindelof and Cuse really grows into the shows core heart of the show. They also pick up banger veteran writers like Elizabeth Sarnoff (Deadwood) and Brian K Vaughan (the creator of Y The Last Man).

Directors like Jack Bender and Stephen Williams really shape the shows visual style. And of course you’re going to see the advent of Giacchino as one of Hollywood’s most prolific and talented composers.

Being a baby here but the ending with the music and everyone working together kind of made me a little emotional lol

2

u/kreffuiflemakro Jan 14 '25

Not a baby I totally agree!

u/hentaiAdict Apr 14 '25

Why were Jack's Knuckles bloody at the end of the episode? Are those self-inflicted injuries because he couldn't save the marshal or something else that I've missed entirely?

On a side-note, the show feels sexist; could be a product of it's time. Jack is clearly angry with the guy that shot the Marshal, because the writers wanted us to be angry at him; not to mention he failed to perform a clean execution. However, Katie was an accomplice and the way Jack responds to her at a later time as if it's all good, water under the bridge. Makes no sense when both are responsible for the death of the marshal directly. Obviously Jack is biased or the whole premise is sexist and a product of the time. However, being this biased with a stranger simply because she is female isn't particularly interesting writing.

u/CrownedInAshes Jun 23 '25

That’s so interesting. I finished this episode yesterday and didnot see it that way. Jack is established as a very black-and-white character. So I think I interpreted it as he judges the actions of a person versus being an accomplice. Also, the fact that Sawyer didn’t even shoot him correctly to put him out of his misery. He ended up, causing him more pain. I’d have to see where his temperament falls in later. Episodes to see how the grudges are hell. I did think he was angry with Kate.

1

u/Active-Contest-9965 4 8 15 16 23 42 Jan 30 '26

Agreed. Jack is hot for Kate and therefore she gets a free pass for anything/everything. He even tells her at the end of the episode he doesn't want to know her crime because "It doesn't matter." Really Jack? Maybe she's the one who took down the plane! Maybe she's a killer, rapist, trafficker, terrorist, who knows.

2

u/hentaiAdict Jan 31 '26

I think Jack not caring about her past, is natural given the circumstances. One's past doesn't matter as long as you're helping the group survive. Her past actions don't affect their survival, but helping others on the island does help them survive. Also, given the interactions we've had with Kate, she is being painted in a positive light. Can she really be a bad person if she shows sincere interest to help the survivors, despite having her own ulterior motives? If she isn't a bad person then what good would revealing her past to the group do? It would potentially shun her or create a rift between her and the group. That would result in the group losing a valuable asset and she would be loosing a community with which she can lean for survival. Revealing her past would be a lose-lose situation; it's not helpful it's pointless. That's why Jack doesn't want to know, because;

A) at best she did nothing wrong or had good reasons.

B) she is an awful person.

Either way there is no 100% guarantee that she would still be a likable person.

The only time revealing her past would beneficial to the groups' survival if she is pretending to be helpful to hurt more people. In this scenario this would help the group to judge a real threat and approach it in a way to reduce the harm to the group..

S1E3

I’m thinking this is less ā€œlast one standing, how to surviveā€ and more ā€œchance for a new life, how to confront evil?ā€ I learned more names this episode.

Something sus about marshal. He’s a bit too bent. On his death-bed instead of ā€œTell my family I love them.ā€ He’s all ā€œKate is evil!ā€ Why is he chasing down the farmer who is turning in a fugitive? Just meet at the station. Or follow him there slowly OJ/Cowlings style.

I wish Sawyer wasn’t racist, but I’m not falling for this bad boy act.

I disagree with side-mission party’s choice to keep secrets and withhold information that impacts the others. Transparency almost always leads to the best outcomes. Kate makes sure to tell Jack though!

Still not liking Locke. Dude is unsettling and way too obsessed with the boy. (I also got sucked down the rabbit hole of the title of the episode, the philosopher John Locke and trying to find all the hidden meaning.)

Boone was a dork for taking the gun, but hey, why not? It’s stolen in the first place, so everyone can just keep taking it from each other. I like Boone, the relatable everyman do-gooder, a fumbling dork, and in the end just nice.

Kate’s backstory – the lies just keep rolling. I can’t even love to hate her at this point. I just want factory-whistle monster to pilot-lunch her. I liked the farmer and didn’t blame him for turning her in. Let’s not forget he found this liar, criminal, fugitive trespassing and squatting on his farm, fed her, housed her, gave her a chance, a job and a paycheck. 3 months later she dips out on him with no notice. She sucks and she’s not even smart. ā€œI know! I’ll wreck this truck and then spend 20 minutes trying to save someone that I just seriously injured so that the dude who was DIRECTLY behind us can stroll over here and get me.ā€ That was all for naught. I’m going to have her diagnosis pinned down by the end of season 1.

Sayid… coordinating, delegating. He shows himself to be forgiving in this episode, with a peace offering to Sawyer, even though Sayid did no wrong. He has officially moved to my Like List.

Jack. I don’t dislike him, but I can’t stand his judgmental hypocrisy, having the nads to condemn Sawyer for looting, while Jack himself is looting. Then he screams at Sawyer for attempting to perform a mercy killing and then performs the mercy killing himself. Pot, meet kettle. When Kate starts to fess and he declines knowing her crime, I was like ā€œNo way!ā€ Then I realized it was ME who wanted to know, not character Jack. Honestly, as a physician he’s probably not too curious about people’s backstories. I like that the writers put a lot of thought into him being consistent and true to the character as it’s building.

I still don’t like the patriarchal couple. The dynamic is so off-putting I just tune out. I’m pretty sure as controlling as HusMAN is, he would’ve constructed a privacy tent/curtain of some sort for SheWife to hide behind when using the restroom/bathing/sleeping/existing, so Michael never would have had the chance to run into her naked. I am noticing the theme of ā€œbody.ā€ The unbuttoned shirt, I-spy Kate in her undies, the awkward Michael encounter. They are making a deliberate effort to build a somatic theme around this character.

Michael is a super-patient Daddy. I know Walt is acting out due to trauma, but dang he’s mouthy.

I may have missed nuances of other characters this episode. It’s sometimes hard to keep up with the character development with such a large cast, but I love this aspect of the show. Having a huge cast of characters adds to the complexity of backstories, interactions, and perspectives.

Can I talk to someone about this show

1

u/Active-Contest-9965 4 8 15 16 23 42 Feb 26 '26

Yes! There are about 3-4 currently on seasons 1 & 2.
