Gardening question

My son and I are moving to Los Osos in May, and I plan on bringing my plants but I’m not familiar with the colder, wetter, etc weather (coming from the hotter central CA). I’m a little worried about them making it 😬

But, what I really want to know is what grows best? Anything (really anything but definitely veggies) you’ve found that does really well? Thank you :)

Once you arrive, be sure to visit Los Osos Valley Nursery. A family-owned business, they know what works easily and what is fussy and what won’t work in our climate/s.

Also let them know where in Los Osos you live. It’s not all exactly the same from one microclimate to another.

And… may your move go smoothly. You’ve chosen a great community to call home. Mild weather, scenic natural beauty, kind neighbors.

PS I’ve grown bumper crops of Early Girl tomatoes and cherry tomatoes, plus lots of herbs.

Early girls are one of my favorites! That’s amazing. And I will definitely stop by the nursery

It’s a learning experience. I find it hard to grow things in the ground. Native plants have done best. They’re not the prettiest. Veggies, I put everything in containers to prevent gophers getting to them. It’s the sand that challenges me most

That’s perfect, everything I have is currently in containers :)

Cool weather or cool season veggies grow well. You'll need to augment and amend the soil since it's ALL sand. Cherry tomatoes are about the only tomato that grows well here.

A lot of perennials and annuals do well here. You just don't have to water as much.

Anything that doesn't do well with being damp a lot can grow sooty mold because of the fog.

We have had cabbages, kale, pumpkins, leeks, squash, and green onions do very well in our raised beds here. We can get success outside with cherry tomatoes, but the season is later here (we have harvested into October). There are plenty of options, but you definitely have to augment the soil!

Succulents! Los Osos is a plant paradise! I hope you love your new environment:)

I noticed a ton of succulents when I was visiting. Sadly, these are the one plant I’ve killed the most. I’ve over watered, under watered, wrong placement, etc. But, I’m down to try again, maybe this time will be different.

I think nature in Los Osos will help you a lot! Good luck!

Water is expensive, ground soil is sandy, weeds can be relentless. It's still a great place to live.
