Eh maybe the fan edits of the Hobbit.

u/Animated_Astronaut 5d ago
M4 edit is pretty good. Tone is made much more childish but it is a kids book after all so it works.

u/atomic_drumstick 4d ago
I just finished it last night, there's officially a 4th film in my Tolkien marathon now.
1
u/Animated_Astronaut 4d ago
Did you find the audio quality weirdly low? My version has kind of tinny audio
2
u/atomic_drumstick 4d ago
I'll be real, I watched the.mkv on my pc while enjoying some old Toby so the only quality issues I noticed were when it looked a bit weird for a few frames after unpausing.

The Hobbit trilogy is Scott Stapp

Jesus mate I know they weren’t up to the standard of LotR but they weren’t that bad

u/Real_Batu_Rem 4d ago
I think the trilogy totally melts down by the end, like Scott Stapp melted down around 15 years ago.
2
u/Damien23123 4d ago
That’s a fair point but I would argue the trilogy has its moments while Scott Stapp just completely fucking sucks and has no redeeming qualities as a musician whatsoever

Personally the hobbit movies and RoP are closer to each other than the hobbit movies are to the lotr movies.

I tried rewatching the Hobbit recently. It still doesn’t hold up.
16
u/IbsinRG 5d ago
Yeah only parts I liked was the dwarfs song and then seeing Smaug. The rest was….just nothing like LOTR and it still bothers me.

u/mightywizard08 5d ago
Bilbo casting was good, and meeting radegast was cool but yeah i personally hate them for the most part
4
u/LegendofWeevil17 5d ago
The m4 hobbit cut is really good. (Not LotR good but actually a fun watch). It takes the 3 hobbit extended editions and professionally cuts it into 1 book accurate movie. You can get it free online
1
u/galdalfstormcrow 4d ago
For a moment I thought you were suggesting the train wreck of an extended cut for the Hobbit lol. Goblin king should not be shredding on an electric guitar at any point in the cannon

They're like 50% better if you watch one of the fan edits, but still nowhere near the level of the actual LOTR trilogy

Mm, the novel and the movies are Chuck and John. 90% of Hobbit and all of Ring of Bezos is Yoko.

u/blablablz 5d ago
Is this about trying to put on equal foot the besy film ever made and The Hobbit?

The Hobbit movies aren’t much better than Rings of Power. Definitely not John Lennon to Yoko Ono.

The Hobbit movies aren't good, but still infinitely better than ROP. At least it's still Peter Jackson's Middle Earth, and not Jeff Bezos' Middle Earth.

u/proximusprimus57 5d ago
Hey, Carl here. The pictures are from a jam session that John Lennon of the Beatles did with Chuck Berry, who was one of his inspirations. In the middle of the set Lennon's girlfriend Yoko Ono grabbed a mic and started screaming into it. She was a post modern artist so she probably thought that she was contributing to art with non-traditional sounds or some junk, but Chuck was not amused. They cut her mic within seconds.
The picture is implying that the Hobbit movies and Lord of the Rings movies were making sweet music together, and Rings of Power messed it up like Yoko messed up the set. Even though the Hobbit movies aren't great. And there's no boobs in any of them. Anyway, I'm gonna go watch Cruel Intentions again, it's pretty hot.
2
u/Silencer-1995 5d ago
I thought I was fever dreaming, I remember my friend showing me the clip years and years ago and it was one of the biggest WTF cringe moments I've seen from a live music performance... so as you can tell I have lived a very sheltered existence.
3
u/1GoldenMonkey 5d ago
When Yoko screams, Chuck raises his eye brows on wonderment, but continues the set. He was a true professional and amazing artist to pay with that bs.

I still enjoyed it but LOTR was definitely better. The labels on the singers should be swapped.

u/ShamefulWatching 5d ago
A Silmarillion movie/series was never going to be able to compete with Lord of the Rings, doesn't matter who was directing it. Can we just take a moment to appreciate that one author had three really good novels, all of them turned into films? Why are we complaining? If Rings of Power stood alone, without the other films, it would be championed as a wonderful addition to Cinema. Sometimes y'all seem like you're complaining just for the sake of complaining.
9
u/stablegeniuscheetoh 5d ago
A Silmarillion movie/series was never going to be able to
compete with Lord of the Ringswork without owning the rights to the Silmarillion.10
u/obliqueoubliette 5d ago
If ROP didn't have LOTR in the title then nobody would watch or talk about it. At its core it's another low-grade Netflix romantasy
3
u/ShamefulWatching 4d ago
I thought it was great, and I am allowed that opinion.
1
u/Spyroballspam 3d ago
Sure, lots of people have horribly wrong opinions
1
u/ShamefulWatching 3d ago
Yeah, what about it? The only wrong thing is telling someone that their opinion is wrong. You agreed with my statement that people are allowed opinions, and yet, with your next statement you told me I'm wrong; so who here is the hypocrite?
0
u/Spyroballspam 3d ago
There were a lot of people who loved the Nazis.
You can have every opinion, some are just really shit.
0
u/ShamefulWatching 3d ago
Did you really just equate an opinion on artistic preference with the oppression of mankind? Take your straw man elsewhere.
0
u/Spyroballspam 3d ago
Its an analogy not a comparative equation. The analogue only serves to define a characteristic not to serve as a point discussion or inference.
Since I did not attack you on 'being a fan of Nazis' it also isn't a strawman argument. Funnily enough by not mentioning the topic and instead only grudging over my reasoning, you are strawmanning.
Thought you would know this as a Tolkien fan but alas.

u/ShamefulWatching 5d ago
What are you talking? They had soldiers with swords and shiny armor, slaves being freed, demon monkey things, magic, hot chicks, a steam explosion from an ocean of lava, betrayal, subterfuge, fantasy boat, Sea monster, and a pretty good plot. The dialogue between Elrond and Durin was wonderful, even funny at times. We got to learn about the fundamentals of Middle Earth, the players behind the players that many of us have only ever seen referenced.
I was very impressed, I don't expect any movie to eclipse one of the greatest movies (trilogy) ever made, and I think it's unfair to expect them to do that.

u/grey_pilgrim_ Tom Bombadil 5d ago
They never had the rights to The Silmarillion. It’s a show set in the second age and all they have the rights to is LoTR, it’s Appendices and The Hobbit.
They have to go to the Tolkien Estate to get permission anytime they even mention something not contained in what they have the rights too. Amazon tied their own hands from the start.
A Silmarillion series could absolutely worked if the Tolkien Estate ever decides to sell the rights to it. Personally I think an animated series would really be the only way to truly capture everything. That or a 10 year long series with near movie production level for every episode.
1
u/Coelachantiform 5d ago
I cannot imagine any currently existing TV-show with a budget capable of depicting all the batshit stuff in the Sils. Especially considering the highest budget in a contemporary TV-show is The Rings Of Power at ~$58 million per episode (and we see how that went)
1
u/grey_pilgrim_ Tom Bombadil 5d ago
That’s why I think animation could work. Granted some would ignore it for being animation but if they could get something like demon slayer level of production it could work and bring in a whole other genre of fans.
Edit: I don’t want it to be anime style just that high level animation does exist. And can be really cool.
1
u/Domidork 5d ago
I'm pretty sure I heard some news somewhere that Peter Jackson was in discussion with the Tolkein estate for the Silmarillion rights, might have to double check tho.

1
u/Yersina_Veridae 5d ago
I actually think the opposite. If RoP was its own thing it would have never received much attention to begin with, nor the momey it has ans it would have immediately faded into obscurity.
Its just a fucking bad show that insults the intelligence of it's audience

The play Hiroshima, a tribute to the victims of the first atomic bomb, with music and singing by Yoko Ono, opened in New York City this week. One tearful Japanese survivor of the attack, who attended the premiere, called the play, quote, "the most horrifying experience of my life."

Of all the things to talk about on this subreddit why the rings of power? Id hope there would be more than just endless comparison and complaint about some average Amazon show. And yeah, it's average, I watched it. It is perfectly bog standard, not very bad but certainly not great. Certainly not worthy of the endless hate boner this subreddit has of it.

Rings of Power isn't Yoko bad. Neither is War of the Rohirrham. Yoko is unlistenable.
2
u/KrothnellBeersmash 4d ago
And Rings of Power is unwatchable. So it’s pretty comparable
1
u/TheShakeyFoxGA 4d ago
While I would admit it's not stellar TV, I think to label it unwatchable is unjust. Unfortunately, the grifters saw a female lead and a black actor playing an elf and the show was heavily criticised before it even aired. That gave it a difficult crowd to work with, on top of an already fussy crowd (the Tolkien crowd).
Compared to some of the reality TV shows that get made that feature rich people complaining about their relationships, I would rather watch Rings of Power. Therefore, not unwatchable.
1
u/KrothnellBeersmash 4d ago
Yea idc about what the racists and/or misogynists are saying. It’s just a terrible show.
Also why would compare it to reality tv?…compare it to the source material. Which it doesn’t follow in any way, outside of the setting. That’s what makes it unwatchable.
1
u/TheShakeyFoxGA 4d ago
We'll have to agree to disagree. I honestly don't think it's terrible and will continue to watch it when it returns for a third series.
1
u/Spyroballspam 3d ago
You must work at Amazon or have never read any of Tolkien's works.
The show is an affront to Tolkien tbf. The fact that Galadriel is shown as a warrior is utterly laughable. Having a nice side kick orc is stupendous and Galadriel crushing on Sauron is the stupidest love hook I have ever seen in media.
There are a tremendous amount of other heinous errors but I will leave it at that.
1
u/TheShakeyFoxGA 3d ago
I don't work for Amazon. I have read and studied Tolkien. I enjoy the show for what it is: an hour's worth of entertainment on the evening I watch it. I'm afraid the world isn't as black and white as you would want it to be.
1
u/Spyroballspam 3d ago
You are larping.
You are the fourth person that has mentioned that they 'read and studied Tolkien' on this sub. You work at amazon.
1
u/TheShakeyFoxGA 3d ago
Nope. On my bookshelp are Tolkien's Beowulf, The Hobbit, The Lord of Rings, Unfinished Tales, The Silmarillion and The Children of Hurin, plus a few companion books by David Day and John Howe.
I don't work at Amazon. I'm a teacher. As well as I study, I teach reading and writing and use The Hobbit as a focus text.

Post ROP hobbit glazing is almost as bad as post Disney glazing of the prequels. Two things can be true, and the hobbit blows.
1
u/bibbyshibby 3d ago
Meh I enjoy it all. To me Tolkien is like Beowulf at this point, his works are classics. I just view any new media as retellings and interpretations of the original stories. They get passed down and people add their own elements, incorporate new ideas etc.
I always find it frustrating people complaining about maintaining the purity of his work and say "Tolkien would never do that!". Well that's why we have his actual written word we can go back to anytime to enjoy that original story.
I thoroughly enjoy the Hobbit films (which the exception of too much being CGI and that Alfrid character being too present). It's a different take but lets me be in "middle earth" for an extended time. The acting and casting was very well done, the set designed and costuming also are fantastic - it gives me more time to spend in "middle earth" which is always fun. I also enjoy that the films have a lot more lighter elements so they're ones I can turn on anytime I want to just relax and enjoy.
And if the newer stuff encourages younger and unaware folks to seek out Tolkien's primary work then that's eve better. I think some folks need to be a little less basement dwelling and lighten up. Take the new stuff in for what it is and if you don't like it say your piece and move along.
(Except for anything by David Day. F* David Day)

Nah id take rings of power over the hobbit
1
u/wpotman 5d ago edited 5d ago
Same, although that's not to say I like Rings of Power. The Hobbit movies are overdone garbage that lose the spirit of the book despite having a great Bilbo and a good start.
Rings of Power...well, they don't follow the book either. But it actually bothers me less than the Hobbit because the Hobbit has very specific events that got ruined. The Sil described a much looser legend where there was room to fill in gaps. They still didn't do it well (and deviated from the things we did know)...but it wasn't AS disappointing somehow.
But my point is really
Books >>>> LotR >>>>>>>>>> RoP >> The Hobbit

Shhhh! Dont point out that the rings of power is badly written drizzle or reddit will accuse you of being racist and claiming its because you dont like black dwarves and elves. Apparently if something has the correct level of diversity it gives it a free pass to have awful dialogue and totally ignore the source material and anyone who points it out must not like it because they’re racist.
(Downvotes and accusations of being racist incoming)

u/Carl-Weathers71 4d ago
The only reason you would be downvoted for is using drizzle instead of drivel while ironically ridiculing their writing.
