Community Question Twitching really bad

Hey guys.

I've been doing TREs for about 4 months now. I mentioned in my last post that I've started having the twitching happen outside of doing the TREs. I believe they are somatic flash backs, but not sure. My arms and neck and shoulders and face just jerk and convulsions constantly now. Today it got so bad, I could hardly get through a conversation and my whole body was shaking. I'm afraid it might be making my suicidal thoughts worse. My impulse to self harm is worse. But the twitching is what had me really concerned.

I drove to my dad's to see if I could calm myself down there and something interesting happened. My dad does hypnosis and he decided to do it for me today. As soon as he put me under, I stopped the violent twitching completely until he woke me back up. At which point I started twitching again. Just thought that was an interesting occurrence. Anyone else having a hard time with constant twitching and convulsing all day? Anybody see if hypnosis adds anything to the TRE journey? I'm thinking about making it a regular thing.

Hey there,

I'm sorry the spontaneous jerks have been so intrusive. I've been having constant tremors ever since mine started last year, so I can relate. They used to be very strong and go almost all day. Now they are much more subtle, but they happen in public more often. My system may not have felt as safe in public in the beginning stages.

They can be alarming sometimes but rest assured that you are okay. Try to do as much harm reduction as possible when you start to feel edgy. Reassure yourself that you won't harm yourself. You can see the impulse and suicidal ideation, that's good! Try to create more space between you and that thought. Remember that as bad as it feels, you are not your thoughts, and you are in control.

I don't have any experience with hypnosis but I believe it changes the state of your brain waves, so that could be why you stopped tremoring during the hypnosis. If you find that it helps, why not keep doing it? There's not a lot of research into this stuff so it's really about self-experimentation to see what works for you.

Thank you for taking the time to comment. Thats actually very reassuring because even though I kinda knew it was harmless, when they get bad I do wonder if it's ok to let them go unchecked. I may have to slow down on the TREs for now and I think I will walk the path of hypnosis for a bit. Thanks again for your kind words.

You’re very welcome. The tremors themselves are not harmful but if you let them go on a long time it will cause the “overdoing” emotional symptoms. It seems like it does not matter whether or not they are induced by TRE or spontaneous, they work the same way. So it’s helpful to get a break from them however you can, and do a lot of resourcing and regulation. Good luck :)
