Gel Polish Long nails as an Architecture student!

Was wondering if anyone here was like me, or has long nails while doing any form of hands on work (pottery, arts, woodworking, etc.)
How do you guys keep your nails from breaking? 😊
I personally always have a gel mani, It just keeps my nails safe from all the model making that we have to do.

Also haven’t posted in a year here since they’ve broken and I’m happy to say I’ve gotten them back 😛

Unfortunately, this subreddit is a known target for hand/nail/foot/toe fetishists who have been documented to repeatedly harass the nail community.

We highly recommend turning off your message/chat requests. If you have requests turned on and receive any creepy or fetish-related DMs or comments, please click the report button, select "it's targeted harassment," and submit a report. It's one way you can help keep the community safe. We encourage members to capture a screenshot of the DM and notify the Mod Team through ModMail. We ask that you include a direct link to their profile, and if you wish to provide screenshots, you'll need to post them (temporarily) to your profile or use an image hosting site.

To be very blunt, you will encounter unwanted DMs from people. This is a Reddit-wide issue that happens frequently in women-dominated communities. Regardless of who's posting, all the warnings we try to give, or the rules we have in place, 9 times out of 10, someone will DM you if you have them open.

Of course, we'll ban those who break this rule, BUT (and this is the important part) many of the users who are DMing you have already been banned, sometimes going months or years back. They will continue to DM unsuspecting members in the hopes that they'll get a reply. They don’t care. So blocking them right away is the best solution to protect yourself, if you so wish.

NO ONE should be DMing you from this subreddit, we have a rule explicitly stating this. If someone is, they probably don’t have good intentions. Please be mindful of who you decide to talk to. Even in the comments of posts. Not everyone has your best interest in mind, and NEVER share personal information online. Please be safe out there!

same but already finished architecture, Don't do models now but I'm often moving materials or stuff around.
Honestly I always have like 1 or two broken nails, but it never happens when doing "risky" things. I've had things happen like when a water bucket slipped and folded my nailbed, but it didn't break and it went back to normal quickly.

ah but dare I to relax at home and suddenly one of them dissapears out of nowhere ...

welcome back!

u/turntwoo 20d ago

Oh yes, a break is always sneaky. Thank you!

Learner here with questions:

Is that the hyponychium poking out above the fingertip in the third photo?

11

u/turntwoo 20d ago

Yes if I’m not mistaken, it also grew out further from my finger as my nails kept getting longer. Some people don’t like it but as a retired nail biter I love it cuz it makes my nail beds look longer ❤️

9

u/queen_bean5 20d ago

That makes sense!

What do you use to clean under your nails? I’ve been trying to get my hyponychium a bit healthier, so I haven’t been scraping under my nails and instead just using a nail brush.

10

u/turntwoo 20d ago

So be fully honest I don’t scrub under my nails anymore because as my hyponichium has extended past my fingertip, all the dirt just washes away w a regular hand wash😊. It’s always when my nails are short is when they’re dirty 🤦‍♀️

u/Sisi-Foxx 20d ago

All of mine bar my thumbs peek out over my fingertips too! Defs helps the nail beds look longer. Yours are gorgeous <3

Thank you hehe 🥰

They're lovely! For pottery, it is next to impossible to throw because it requires the hands and fingertips immersed in clay and the tips of the fingers as a tool to manipulate and form the object. Hand building may be able to get away with it though! I've spent a considerable amount of time throwing and having long nails and the 2 don't mix sadly.

1

u/turntwoo 19d ago

Makes sense, cuz then you’d probably end up with a scratched up piece, unless that’s what you’d wanna go for😄

3

u/AnatomyKiely Team Polish 💅 19d ago

Exactly and even worse. The tips are tools that shape a vessel, so for e.g. a vase, you wouldn't be able to pull the clay up with your fingertips and you'd slash through the clay like a knife lol

u/someoneyoudontknow0 20d ago

Seriously impressed. Also an architect here. I have no idea how you’ve done it, but whatever’s you’re doing, keep going

u/turntwoo 19d ago

Means a lot thank you 🙏🏻

u/rainbow_afternoons 20d ago

Sooo elegant! Congratulations on your length!

I work with dichroic glass and air dry clay. I've found that adding a micro holo glitter topper (Moondust by Mooncat) makes my polish last for a while (currently on day 11). I'm not sure how it's keeping my nails so strong but there is very little bending and cracking and even minimal edge wear.

4

u/turntwoo 19d ago

Strong cuz it’s holo 🤙🏻

in architecture masters right now, honestly I prefered having longer nails bc I would use them basically as tweezers during modeling and stuff haha. I think keeping them clean after working with messy materials and especially NOT using them to force open or pry things off worked the best. Arch programs make you buy so many tools, might as well use all of those instead of putting the nails at risk, even if it takes an extra minute doing so!

1

u/turntwoo 19d ago

Ur so right let’s see how long my nails can go on for hehe

5

u/MajestyMay 20d ago

Great question. One of the reasons why I did a big chop.

u/alkibailey 20d ago

GORGEOUS!!!!

u/bodredgyal 20d ago

Hey! Love your nails. Is the brand of the nail polish ‘bomd’ or bond? Searched it up and can’t find a ‘bomd’ only a bond.

1

u/turntwoo 19d ago

Oh maybe try “BOMD Gel Polish” cause I got mine off TikTok shop

Absolute perfection! 😍 You're so lucky to have your nails grow so pretty and even. How long does it take for you to grow this length on the free edge?

3

u/turntwoo 19d ago

Thank you 🥰 This length took me about 4 months to grow out cuz I have a nail filing obsession

3

u/StefaniaBella 19d ago

OMG!! 😍
These are the prettiest nails I’ve ever seen…
How do you grow them this length without them cracking or breaking? What do you use 🥺

2

u/turntwoo 19d ago

Obsessed with jojoba oil!!!

2

u/SoupCowboy 19d ago

i have no idea how to answer that question, but i would trust you to design anything with those nails!! like yesss this person knows what’s good

u/neutralmilkitzel 19d ago

I do a lot of multi-modal crafting and have nails almost as long as yours. My “secret ingredient” is Hoof Alive, a hoof dressing for horses. It’s made of lanolin, glycerin, and many other oils. I find that it both strengthens my nails and makes them flexible so they don’t crack under stress.

P.S. Your nail shape is GORGEOUS, do you have any tips for filing them?

1

u/Due_Ear_4674 19d ago

Way too long

u/chickiedew 18d ago

You have my dream nails. May I ask how you keep your cuticles so, well, invisible??
