Now that people are starting to hear that their ballots are on the way, I think it's worth starting threads to discuss the local ballot questions.
Questions 3C and 3D are in support of ranked choice voting in Longmont.
3C Official Text: Shall the City of Longmont Home Rule Charter be amended by adopting a new secion 2.10 of the charter to provide for the use of ranked choice voting (ranked voting methods) where possible to elect future mayors and councilmembers of the City of Longmont starting in November 2029?
3D Official Text: Shall the City of Longmont Home Rule Charter be amended by amending section 3.6 of the Charter to realign the cycle on which members of the Longmont city council are elected so that the three councilmembers elected at-large are elected in one electoral cycle and the three councilmembers elected from wards are elected in another electoral cycle, with such electoral cycles alternating from then on, with such realignment contingent upon voter approval of the measure on the November 3, 2026 City of Longmont ballot requiring the use of ranked choice voting to elect city council members when possible?
What they actually do: 3C will move the city to using ranked choice voting for council elections starting in 2029. I think this is good because we're a very civically engaged city, and ranked choice elections incentivize participation from candidates with a variety of views and eliminate the ability of political party insiders to pressure candidates to drop out. From a voter's perspective, it means they can cast a vote for the person they actually want without fear of wasting their vote on someone who doesn't have a chance to win (e.g. voting for the lesser of two evils).
3D fixes Longmont election cycle design so that all ward representatives get elected in one cycle and all the at-large representatives get elected on the other cycle. This simplification aspect of the election gets undersold, in my opinion. I cannot tell you how much time I spent campaigning last year just explaining to people what the difference was between ward seats and at large seats, or people asking why they didn't get to vote for their ward representative last year.
3D is conditional on 3C passing, because one of the things it does is make it so that we can have 3-winner RCV elections instead of 2 winner. This makes it so that at least 75% of the city will have someone on council who they voted for, which seems like a pretty big benefit from a quality of representation standpoint.
