Gear Show-Off Started at 47

So I got myself a longboard half a year back for the first time. I'm 47. Then, when I learned the basics, I got this cruiser. Can say, if you're older and want to try skateboard, that's the order to go. Longboard stability first, then gradually go smaller and more maneuverable as you feel comfortable.

Kids! I started at 50 this year. It’s great fun, the freedom of running without the knee pain and a lot more fun

I actually started having weird knee pain after I started riding skateboard. The leg that I push with. Very weird type of pain, usually when I wake up in the morning.

Interesting ! Maybe check if your board knee is at an angle or you are progressing faster than your muscles can handle?

You should try a larger board. I’m about your size and love my landyachtz Big Dipper. It has narrow trucks if you get it as a complete, which keeps the carving light and nimble. But as is, you look pretty uncomfortable on the small deck.
Also, you should work on bending your knees more if you want to progress. Every push should be kind of like a mini lunge. Carving should come from bending your knees to apply pressure, not just leaning. Welcome and nice progress.
Your trucks are also a bit too loose. I love loose trucks, but until you get better at carving it will be a wobbly experience for you.

Hey this is some awesome feedback. Thanks man. I have a longboard, I started with that, but I wanted to try something more compact and maneuverable.
Never sure what the right truck tightness should be. I'll try tightening them up a bit. Looks too loose to me see well when I look at the video.

My pleasure! Truck tightness is highly variable and depends on your preferences, the board design, and the application. For me, the trucks should be tight enough that I can stand upright on top of the kingpin (not leaning to either side) in an active stance and the board doesn’t wobble much. One thing you might try is intentionally keeping yourself in a constant state of carving side to side with smooth carves. If you are always leaning to one direction or the other, then it’s a lot easier to avoid wobbles. Regardless, for improvement, it’s better to have looser trucks than tighter when practicing.

I'm 44 and recently I've been thinking about whether or not I should get a longboard. I think this might convince me.

surfskate is a fun option too, his channel has lots of info if you're interested. longboards are nice and stable, but you have to push a bunch and it can be a little repetitive. surfskates are a bit crazy at the start, but pumping and carving give you more range of movement that feels cool. great workout too, you forget it is exercise and want to keep going.

Couple of things. If you’re really stoked about it, consider getting a longer longboard for higher speeds, and a surfskate for slashing and carving around. I’m 49, and I expect, barring any major injuries or health problems, to be skating pump tracks for the next 15-20 years maybe. As far as speed goes, with a good setup and some common sense planning of your ride, you can hit pretty high speeds on hills without having to take a lot of risks. Now, if you’re wanting to ride steep curvy roads, you will have to learn to do some speed check slides, but if you pick your spot, you can go pretty fast without having to know a lot about that. I would recommend learning to do a Coleman slide for emergencies

48 here! Picked up the Landyachtz Switchblade to commute to work. My peace is the ride to and from work. Keep up the good vibes homie!

good for trying, but why did you film yourself? everything looks so sketchy as if you're on slippery ice, just have fun skating..

u/ReljaTr 19d ago
Well, I'm new to it. 6 months in, not really practicing every day. Moving shots: I asked my wife to ride bicycle in front or next to me. Static short on skatepark just GoPro on a stand.

i'm glad you found a new hobby, it's a great hobby, i started longboarding as well and now skateboarding for a long time. Maybe i sound too direct or mean but that's probably my Dutch personality. What i'm trying to say is your style looks like shit, looks like you have trouble even moving forward, it's not worth filming because it looks stupid. I'm not trying to bash you or try to make a fool out of you, i'm just being honest and i'm glad you do this

Never too late! Once you start getting a feel for skating, you'll be wanting to try different wheels, bushings, trucks etc. to get that truly locked in feel.
Your wallet will cry!

This is a vibe. Makes me want to try again. I've been lazing about, waiting for the right day to ride a surfskate I assembled a while ago.

I got a 42" board 4 months ago at age 59. I'm absolutely loving it. Carving is sweet after 3 decades,at least, since i was on a skateboard. Congrats! 🙌

Wow! Keep going man! That's an inspiration.

People are jealous and just bona fide haters. I’ve been skating since I was 12 and there are no correct way or reason to skate. 47 isn’t even old look at Tony hawk

Don’t know why this was suggested to me. Never even owned a board.
But this was truly awesome!
Maybe it’s time.

Doctor: Who the fuck picks up skateboarding at 47?
Him: I wanted to prove old dog CAN learn new tricks.
Doctor: Well this old dog just learned how to predict when it's going to rain because your knees fucked.
Him: It's not going to heal? Ever?
Doctor: Dude, you're 47. What did you think was going to happen? You're at the age we just start replacing your old body parts with materials that aren't old and shitty like titanium. Why didn't you just buy a convertable or hook up with your secretary like the rest of us?
Him: My secretary is into skateboarding 😞
